ALPB Wild Card Update, Aug. 31, 2022The Atlantic League Wild Card race is in full swing as the 10 ALPB clubs enter the final three weeks of the regular season. The ALPB postseason features the first and second half champions of the North and South Divisions. However, if one team repeats as division champion in both halves, then a Wild Card team gains entry to the postseason. Following games of August 30, the Gastonia Honey Hunters have an eight-game lead over the Kentucky Wild Health Genomes in the South Division and an 8.5 game lead over the Lexington Legends. Should the Honey Hunters continue on to repeat as second half South Division champions, then a Wild Card team would earn a berth. The Wild Card team is the ALPB club not already in the playoffs that has posted the best full-season record. Southern Maryland won the North Division in the first half and Lancaster currently has the best overall record at 61-53. But the Barnstormers hold a four-game lead over the Blue Crabs in the second half. Should Lancaster win the North second half race, that would set-up a Lancaster-Southern Maryland Division Championship Series. If Lancaster continues on its way to the second half North title, the Wild Card race would most likely include High Point, Kentucky and Long Island, each of whom is within 3.5 games of each other. High Point trails Lancaster by 1.5 games but holds a half-game lead over Kentucky and a 3.5 game lead over Long Island. York, Charleston, Lexington and Staten Island remain within striking distance but have a lot of ground to make up over the final 18 games.
