Long Island 3, Gastonia 1

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 6, 2023) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Gastonia Honey Hunters 3-1 on Saturday night in the middle game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

The Ducks opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning on Adeiny Hechavarria’s sacrifice fly to center field off Honey Hunters starter Zack Godley. Gastonia tied the game immediately in the fourth on Curtis Terry’s solo homer to left-center off Ducks starter Stephen Tarpley.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the bottom of the sixth when Philip Caulfield’s RBI single to right put the Ducks back on top 2-1. Boog Powell’s two-out drag bunt RBI single in the eighth extended the lead to two.

Tarpley did not factor into the decision but pitched four innings, allowing a run on two hits and four walks while striking out four. Joe Kuzia (1-0) earned the win, tossing two and one-third perfect innings, striking out six batters. Godley (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on seven hits and three walks over five and one-third innings while striking out five. Justin Alintoff picked up his first save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out two.

Powell led the Flock offensively, recording three hits, an RBI, two walks and a stolen base. Joe DeCarlo added three hits and a run scored, while Caulfield chipped in with two hits and an RBI 

The Ducks and Honey Hunters wrap up their three-game set on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m., with Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 12:35 (12:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s Women’s Health Day at the ballpark, presented by Good Samaritan University Hospital. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive Ducks 2023 Magnet Schedules. It’s also a Sunday Family Funday, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union! Prior to the game, fans will be invited down for a Catch on the Field from 12:40 to 1:00. After the game, fans of all ages are also invited to take part in Kids Run the Bases. Right-hander Brett Kennedy (0-0, 4.50) toes the rubber for the Ducks against Honey Hunters southpaw Ian McKinney (0-0, 4.50).

Lancaster 10, Lexington 5

LANCASTER, Pa. - Kelly Dugan slammed a three-run homer, and Andretty Cordero had two hits and two RBI on Saturday evening as the Lancaster Barnstormers defeated the Lexington Counter Clocks, 10-5, at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

In other words, the Barnstormers looked far more like the championship club of 2022 than they had during the first week of their title defense.

Dugan’s homer off Ean Walda (0-1) followed walks to Shawon Dunston, Jr. and Cordero in the bottom of the fifth and gave Lancaster a lead it never lost.

The Barnstormers continued to take advantage of wildness from the Lexington staff in the sixth.  Cooper Brune loaded the bases on walks to Jake Hoover and Dunston around hitting Trace Loehr with a pitch.  He forced home a run with a walk to Melvin Mercedes.  Cordero reached reliever Dakota Mekkes for a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-3.  Loehr chimed in with a two-out, two-run single into center in the seventh.

Ronnie Dawson went 3-for-4 for Lexington with two doubles and a home run.  He drove in three, two with a double in the top of the second that gave the Counter Clocks a 3-2 lead.  Logan Brown also homered for Lexington while Melvin Mercedes added an eighth inning homer for Lancaster.

Dominic DiSabatino (1-0) worked five innings for the Barnstormers, allowing six hits and three runs.

Lancaster will entertain Lexington in the finale of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00.  The Barnstormers will send Jacob Lemoine (0-0) to the hill against fellow right-hander Sam Burton (1-0).  Fans may follow the game on Flosports.tv.  beginning at 12:55.

NOTES:  Dunston walked four times in the game and has drawn 11 on the season…Andrew Lee pitched two innings, facing only six batters…Ariel Sandoval extended his hitting streak to seven games with a pair of singles…The game drew 5,265, the top crowd of the season.

High Point 10, Frederick 2

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers won their fifth straight game with a 10-2 victory over Frederick Saturday night in front of a crowd of 2,397 at Truist Point. First baseman John Nogowski homered for the third straight game and the Rockers scored 10 or more runs for the fourth time in the last five games.

Frederick notched the first run of the game, using a leadoff single by Luke Becker and consecutive walks issued by High Point starter Mickey Jannis to load the bases. Jose Marmalejos then bounced a ball to third and the Rockers were able to get the out at second with Becker scoring for a 1-0 Frederick lead.

But that would be the only hit Jannis would allow, shutting out Frederick over his final four innings of work.

The Rockers tied the game in the bottom of the first when Beau Taylor laced a single to left and moved to third on a double by Nogowski before scoring on a wild pitch from Frederick starter Elih Villanueva. A single run in the second came when D.J. Burt tripled to score Daikan Yoh.

High Point tallied four runs in the third with shortstop Ryan Grotjohn hitting a two-run triple to right. In the sixth, Nogowki hit his fourth homer of the year scoring Taylor ahead of him, to put the Rockers in front 8-1.

Marmalejos closed out Frederick’s scoring with a solo homer leading off the seventh. But the Rockers countered with a pair of solo blasts in the eighth from Taylor and left fielder Zander Wiel to account for the 10-2 final.

Jannis (1-0) earned the win, his first of the year, by allowing just one hit over his five innings of work, walking three and striking out two. Villanueva (0-1) fell to 0-1 on the season after allowing six hits and six runs over five innings.

The Rocker bullpen was again exemplary as Jeremy Rhoades, A.J. Cole, Kyle Halbohn and Ryan Dull each pitched an inning with Cole yielding the home run to Marmalejos. Dull struck out three in closing the game out in the ninth.

Taylor, Nogowski, Wiel and Aklinski each finished with a pair of hits while Grotjohn had three safeties. Nogowski and Grotjohn each had a pair of RBI.

The Rockers are now 7-1 and off to their best start in franchise history. Frederick, which will not announce a team nickname until June, are 0-7. The two clubs meet again on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at Truist Point with the final contest of the four-game series slated for an 11:05 a.m. start on Monday.

York 13, Staten Island 0

(May 6th, 2023- York, Pa.): The York Revolution earned a shutout victory for the second time in as many home games, this time in blowout fashion, flattening the Staten Island FerryHawks, 13-0 on Saturday evening in front of 5,020 fans at WellSpan Park. The win is the fourth straight for the Revs who go for the series sweep on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Jorge Martinez (1-0) started on the hill for the Revs after having his start pushed back two days and turned in a vintage performance, limiting Staten Island to three hits over six scoreless frames with just one walk and six strikeouts.

The Revs took the early lead in the bottom of the second when Trey Martin singled to start the inning, stole second, and scored when Troy Stokes Jr. roped a double to left center field. Jacob Rhinesmith shot one down the left field line that went all the way to the wall trading places with Stokes Jr. as his RBI double put the Revs on top 2-0.

The Revs got to Hawks starter Austin DeCarr (0-1) for another run in the third as Nellie Rodriguez doubled to left center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored as Drew Mendoza drove him in with a towering fly ball to the warning track in center field, making it 3-0 Revs on the sac fly.

The floodgates opened for York in the fourth, exploding for five runs on five hits against reliever Eddy Reynoso. Alexis Pantoja and Trent Giambrone had RBI singles in the frame and Alejandro Rivero blasted a three-run homer to left center field capping the rally as York was in command with an 8-0 advantage.

Tyler Hill knocked a two-run double that sliced down to one hop the right field wall in the fifth, driving the Revs’ lead to 10-0.

The Revs added more in the seventh as Rivero singled home a run on the right side capping a four-RBI night, and with the bases loaded, Rodriguez worked a walk forcing in a run as the lead climbed to 12-0.

The Revs got their 13th run in the bottom of the eighth off of Kelsie Whitmore as Rhinesmith doubled down the right field line for his fourth hit of the game and Pantoja drove him in with a base hit to right.

Will Carter came on in relief for the Revs in the seventh and pitched a scoreless frame with two strikeouts. Karl Blum made his York debut and pitched around a walk for another shutdown inning in the eighth. Tasker Strobel set down the Ferry Hawks 1-2-3 to close the game as the Revs notched their second straight combined three-hit shutout and did not allow a FerryHawks hit after the fourth inning.

York righty J.T. Notes: Rivero’s four-RBI game is his second in the last four nights and the fourth by a Revs hitter on the four-game winning streak. The Revs have logged consecutive shutouts for the eighth time in franchise history and first since August 21-22, 2019 vs. Southern Maryland. The 13-0 final ties the second-largest shutout victory in team history. Martinez’ win is his 24th all-time in a Revs uniform moving past Mitch Atkins for sole possession of fifth on the all-time list; he is now one shy of tying Frank Gailey for fourth. The Revs have notched back-to-back shutout wins to open the home schedule for the second time in franchise history (2008). In 18 innings pitched at home, the Revs have allowed six hits and two walks while striking out 22 batters. York pitchers recorded double-digit strikeout totals for the fourth straight game. The staff’s overall scoreless streak is now 20 consecutive innings. The Revs have drawn 5,000-plus fans in consecutive home games for the first time since May 22-23, 2019, and the first time ever in consecutive home games to open a season. The Revs will go for a fifth straight win on Sunday as they attempt to secure their longest winning streak since October 1-6, 2021.

York 13, Staten Island 0

The FerryHawks took on the Revs in game two of a three game weekend series here in early May. Austin DeCarr, who signed with the FerryHawks today, took the mound against York.

The Revs took an early lead and didn’t look back whatsoever. DeCarr went three innings, giving up three runs before being pulled by manager Homer Bush. The bullpen troubles continued for Staten Island as the unit surrendered 10 runs after DeCarr’s early departure. 

Scoring runs in all but two innings, York routed Staten Island 13-0 in this contest.
