Somerset Patriots Sign INF/OF Mycal Jones

(Bridgewater, N.J., March 29, 2016) – The Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of infielder/outfielder Mycal Jones.

“I am excited to get on the field again and work on being that super-utility player,” said Jones. “ I am going to come in, play hard and try to get on the field to help this team anyway that I can.”

Jones enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and in the Atlantic League. He had previously spent all seven years of his professional career in the Atlanta Braves organization, reaching as high as Triple-A Gwinnett in 2014 and 2015.

The Jacksonville, Florida native split time between Double-A Mississippi and Gwinnett last year, hitting .262 overall four home runs, 29 RBI and seven stolen bases over 70 games. Defensively, Jones played all three outfield positions throughout the season.

Jones was originally drafted as a shortstop in the fourth round of the 2009 draft by the Braves out of Miami-Dade College. His best season came in 2010, where he combined to hit .262 between Single-A Rome, High-A Myrtle Beach and Mississippi with 15 home runs, 61 RBI and 22 stolen bases over 129 games.

“Mycal is a very exciting player; we love his athleticism,” Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie said. “He reminds me of Jonny Tucker, and although those are big shoes to fill, I think we will see many similarities. Jones can play all three outfield positions and middle infield. We look forward to big things out of Mycal this year!”

He has stolen at least 15 bases in six of the seven years of his career, including 29 steals in 2012 and 2013. Overall, Jones has stolen 144 bases in his minor league career along with 40 home runs and 260 RBI.

The Somerset Patriots won their Atlantic League leading sixth championship during the 2015 season.
