(Bridgewater, N.J., March 16, 2018) - The Somerset Patriots have re-signed catcher Alfonso Reda for the 2018 season.
“Last year was a great learning experience for me,” said Reda. “As the youngest guy on the team, everyone really took me under their wing. It was a great season, but now we have one goal for 2018: a championship.”
Reda enters his second season with the Somerset Patriots and second in the Atlantic League. He worked as the team’s third catcher last season and was activated numerous times throughout the year. He had six plate appearances in the season while working as Somerset’s primary bullpen catcher.
The Montgomery, New York native played his college ball at Misericordia University. There, Reda ranks third in program history in put-outs (623) and is tied for third all-time in fielding percentage (.993). The 2016 graduate hit .292 over 41 games his senior season and threw out baserunners at a 44% clip (11-for-25).
“We are proud to have a trustworthy, dependable guy in Alfonso join our team again in 2018,” said Somerset Patriots manager Brett Jodie. “Al did an outstanding job for us last year primarily as our bullpen catcher, but we know he is capable to fill in on the field if necessary. It takes a hardworking and unselfish individual to do what he does and we are lucky to have him. Reda shows up early every day to work with our pitchers in any way needed and I greatly value his opinion on what he sees. He is a true team guy and it is a pleasure to have him back again this season.”
The Somerset Patriots led the Atlantic League in attendance and made their 14th appearance in the playoffs last season. The Somerset Patriots will welcome their 7,000,000th fan in their 20th season at TD Bank Ballpark in 2018. Tickets are now on sale for the 2018 Season presented by Ford beginning at home on Friday, April 27th. For more information, please visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
