Lancaster 7, Long Island 1

LANCASTER, Pa. - Gray Fenter made his long-awaited first start for the Lancaster Barnstormers on Wednesday night and pitched his new club to a 7-1 victory over the Long Island Ducks at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

It was the tenth win in the last 11 games for the Barnstormers and moved them three games ahead of Southern Maryland in the North race.  The Blue Crabs were rained out at home against High Point.

Fenter (2-0) had thrown four innings of relief at York last Thursday in his final tuneup for the Wednesday start.  The former Orioles and Giants farmhand worked five innings against Long Island, yielding five hits and two walks while striking out six.  The Ducks only scored in the third inning.  With one out, Phil Caulfield doubled to right.  Lew Ford beat out an infield single, and Caulfield came home to score when Andretty Cordero mishandled Fenter’s throw to first.  Alejandro de Aza followed with a single to center, making the run earned.  Fenter then struck out Deibinson Romero and got Carlos Castro to ground into a force play to end the inning.

Long Island left seven runners on base during Fenter’s stint.

Lancaster tied the game in the fourth on a leadoff homer to right center by the torrid Cordero.  In the fifth, the Barnstormers grabbed the lead to stay.  Chris Proctor greeted Sandy Baez (3-3) with a double to left and took third on a wild pitch.  Baez fanned Jake Hoover, and lefty reliever Tyler Webb struck out Trace Loehr.  Melvin Mercedes ripped a double to left to score Proctor for the lead, and Mercedes scored when Cordero flared a single to right.

A two-run single by Loehr and RBI double by Mercedes pushed the lead to 6-1 in the seventh.  Hoover slammed his fourth homer of the season in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Lancaster used three relievers to maintain the lead.  A line drive double play helped new lefty Cam Booser out of trouble in the sixth.  Josh Graham fired two scoreless innings, and West Tunnell pitched a perfect ninth.

The Barnstormers and Ducks will conclude the three-game series on Thursday at 6:30. Erik Manoah (3-1) will get the start for the Barnstormers against Randy Meisinger (3-2).  Fans may tune into Blue Ridge 11 at 6:30.

Staten Island 6, Gastonia 2

The Staten Island Ferry Hawks, jump started by a three-run first inning, got a solid bullpen effort in support of Hector Gunace to defeat the Gastonia Honey Hunters 6-2 on Wednesday night at Caromont Health Park.

The Ferry Hawks jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning off Gastonia starting pitcher Randall Delgado. The frame included three base-hits and a pair of walks, with Ramon Osuna getting the critical knock, a two-run double that pushed the Staten Island lead to 3-0.

Staten Island starter Henry Guance wasn't at the top of his game tonight and neither was his defense. But the defense, like Guance, was good enough when it counted.

Despite three errors for the Ferry Hawks, defensively, they were able to get three timely double plays, stifling any momentum Gastonia tried to muster.

Guance, who allowed two runs on three hits while walking five, was somehow able to get a fly ball or other weak contact when needed, holding the Honey Hunters without a crooked number throughout the game.

Moreover, the Staten Island bullpen was as solid as they could be at a time when Gunace needed the lift.

Guance departed the game in the sixth, the beneficiary of a 5-0 lead. He turned the game over to the pen and the pen held tough.

In four frames of relief, the Ferry Hawks bullpen managed to pitch to contact, allowing only one hit in those final four innings.

Gastonia, who came in as one of the hottest hitting teams in the Atlantic League, was held to four hits in the contest. Joseph Rosa had the only multi-hit game and was the only player with an extra-base hit.

The win for Guance advanced his record to 3-5 on the season, as Delgado fell to 1-1.

Gastonia will look to win the series tomorrow, as John Anderson will oppose Augie Sylk in the finale between the two clubs. First pitch time is slated for 6:15 pm.

High Point at Southern Maryland, postponed

The game will be made up as a doubleheader, Thursday, August 11th with the first game beginning at 11:05 a.m. The pair of seven-inning games will be separated by approximately a 30-minute break between the conclusion of the first game and the beginning of the second.

The Rockers return home to Truist Point Friday night to begin a three-game series against the Gastonia Honey Hunters, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35.

York at Charleston, postponed

(August 10, 2022 - Charleston, WV):  Wednesday's scheduled game between the York Revolution and Charleston Dirty Birds at Appalachian Power Park has been postponed due to rain. The two teams will wrap up their series on Thursday evening with a twi-night doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.

York is looking to snap a two-game skid in Thursday's doubleheader. The two teams are playing six consecutive games head-to-head with each of the first four decided by one run, three of which have been determined in the team's final at-bat.
