Long Island 7, Charleston 5

(Charleston, W.Va., April 26, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Charleston Dirty Birds 7-5 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park.

Deibinson Romero put the Ducks ahead 2-0 in the first inning with a two-run home run to left field off Dirty Birds starter Kevin Herget. An RBI double into the left field corner by Johnni Turbo in the second extended the Ducks lead to 3-0.

The Dirty Birds closed to within 3-1 in the fourth on a solo homer to left by Miles Williams off Ducks starter Akeel Morris. Four two-out runs in the fifth put Charleston ahead 5-3. An RBI infield single by Juan Perez and a three-run homer to right-center by Nick Longhi did the damage.

Sam Travis answered with a two-run home run to right-center in the sixth, tying the ballgame at five apiece. Long Island took the lead back with two runs in the eighth on L.J. Mazzilli’s solo homer to right-center and Dustin Woodcock’s sac fly to left.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Morris pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Herget lasted six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out five. Anderson DeLeon (1-0) earned the win, tossing two and one-third perfect innings out of the bullpen, retiring all seven batters he faced. Justin Miller (0-1) suffered the loss, yielding two runs on three hits in one inning. Tyler Webb picked up his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Mazzilli led the Flock offensively with two hits, a walk, an RBI and three runs scored. Romero and Travis each added two hits and two RBIs.

The Ducks and Dirty Birds continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Appalachian Power Park. Long Island returns home on Friday, May 6, to begin a three-game set against the Lancaster Barnstormers. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). High Point 5, Lancaster 4 (10)

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point’s Quincy Latimore lined a broken-bat single to left field with two outs in the tenth inning to give the Rockers a 5-4 win over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday night at Truist Point.

The inning started with Ben Aklinski on second after he had struck out to end the ninth. With Scott Shuman on the mound for Lancaster, hitting 96 MPH on his fastball, Johnny Field flew out to right before Michael Russell drew a walk. Shuman struck out Jerry Downs on three pitches for the second out. Latimore battled Shuman to a 1-2 count before lining the ball to left in front of Anderson Feliz. The speedy Aklinski scored from second without a throw.

“Q just battled,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “Shuman threw the heck out of the ball. But Q got a ball up in the zone and when you put the bat on the ball, good things happen.”

Chasen Bradford (1-0) earned the win for the Rockers as he set down the Barnstormers in order in the top of the 10th. Shuman (0-1) took the loss for Lancaster.

High Point starter Jheyson Manzueta, making his first start of the season, went 5.1 innings and allowed just four hits and one run while striking out six but came away with no decision. He left the game with a 3-1 lead.

“Manzueta was outstanding tonight,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “We had a little hiccup in the middle with the bullpen but the back end tightened up and helped us get the win.”

The hiccup was a rare sub-par performance from reliever Ryan Dull.  Lancaster got to Dull for three runs in the eighth to erase a 3-1 deficit and take a 4-3 lead. After a lead-off walk to Trace Loehr, Dull gave up a single to Feliz to put runners at first and third. Colton Shaver then singled to drive in Loehr before Kelly Dugan doubled to score Feliz. Mark Zagunis grounded out to third to plate Shaver and give the ‘Stormers their first lead of the night.

The Rockers had taken a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Field started with a single and moved to second when it was misplayed in left by Feliz. A Downs single moved Field to third from where he scored on an infield ground out by Latimore.

The Rockers added two more in the second. After a lead-off walk to Zander Wiel, Mike Gulino drew a walk to put runners on first and second. But Gulino was picked off when an apparent wild pitch bounced back to Lancaster pitcher Cameron Gann who was able to retire Gulino at third. Aklinski then doubled to score Wiel and Field followed with another double to plate Aklinski.

The Barnstormers got on the board for the first time in the sixth when Feliz singled and moved to second when Shaver was hit by a pitch. Keefe removed Manzueta and went with Joe Johnson. Johnson walked Dugan to load the bases before Zagunis lifted a fly ball to center that brought Feliz into score.

The win leaves the Rockers at 3-2 for the season while Lancaster falls to 1-4.

The Rockers will continue their week-long homestand, hosting Lancaster again on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Truist Point.


Lexington 12, York 3
(April 26, 2022 – Lexington, Ky.):  Carlos Franco hammered his first long ball of the year, but the York Revolution were doomed by a big inning in a 12-3 loss to the Lexington Legends on Tuesday night at Wild Health Field.

The Legends quickly jumped ahead as Boog Powell connected to right-center on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first.  Jose Briceno added a sac fly for a 2-0 first inning lead.

Lexington doubled its lead an inning later as Montrell Marshall ripped an RBI double down the left field line, and Powell pushed home one more on a base hit to left-center.

The Revs threatened in the fourth as Legends starter Mason Cole walked the bases loaded.  With one out, Jack Kenley drilled an RBI single high off the right field fence, but reliever Yaramil Hiraldo entered to record a pop up and a fly out, limiting the Revs to just one run in the inning and a 4-1 score.

Things went south in the bottom of the fourth, as the Legends used four singles to chase York starter Duke von Schamann after 3.1 innings.  Cesar Cuevas drove in two runs on a base hit to right.  Reliever Eduardo Rivera struggled to find the strike zone as a walk loaded the bases, before free passes to Phillip Ervin and Briceno forced runs across, sandwiching a hit by pitch of Courtney Hawkins which also resulted in a run.  Tillman Pugh capped the seven-run uprising with a two-run double to right-center, as it was suddenly a lopsided 11-1 score.

Franco launched a two-run homer just right of the batter’s eye in the top of the fifth, making it 11-3 but the Lexington bullpen allowed nothing further.

York’s bullpen was strong over the final four innings as Isaac Sanchez tossed two scoreless, and Robinson Parra yielded just a two-out RBI single by Pugh in the eighth, working the final two frames.

The Revs will look to rebound Wednesday morning with a 10 a.m. first pitch as RHP Nick Travieso makes his debut for York, opposite Lexington right-hander J.J.
