Southern Maryland 6, Charleston 3

(Waldorf, MD, May 14, 2022)  Southern Maryland’s Daryl Thompson carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning in a dominant performance in the Blue Crabs’ 6-3 win over the Charleston Dirty Birds.

The Blue Crabs got to Charleston's starter, Jordan Stephens (L, 0-2), in the bottom of the second inning.  Braxton Lee picked up a base hit with two outs.  On the following pitch, Raul Shah roped a line drive into left field, advancing Lee to second. The next batter, Austin Rei, poked a liner into center field, scoring Lee and giving the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead.

In the third, Southern Maryland struck again.  With one out, Ian Yetsko shot a liner into shallow left field.  Two batters later, David Harris smashed a two-run shot over the wall in left-center field, putting the Blue Crabs ahead 3-0.  David Harris extended his hit streak to eight games with the blast.

The Blue Crabs added a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly and extended their lead again in the eighth. With Southern Maryland leading 4-0, Braxton Lee stood on first base with one out.  The next batter, Raul Shah, destroyed a two-run shot over the wall in left field, giving Southern Maryland a 6-0 lead.

Daryl Thompson (W, 2-1) had a perfect game going through five and two-thirds innings before Tyler Blaum reached on an error.  Thompson kept the no-hit bid through seven and one-third innings.  With one out, Yovan Gonzalez lifted a single into left field, ending the no-hitter.  Thompson worked out of the eighth without allowing a run.

The Dirty Birds rallied in the top of the ninth inning against Alex Merithew.  Mat Latos (SV, 8), entered the game with the Blue Crabs leading 6-2 and runners on the corners for Charleston.  Latos induced a sacrifice fly out to right field before striking out Juan Carlo Perez, to give the Blue Crabs a 6-3 win.

With the win, the Blue Crabs move to 17-3 on the season and have won four consecutive games.  Southern Maryland also extends their lead to 8.5 games in the division over the Long Island Ducks, who are in second place.  The Blue Crabs return home tomorrow at 2 pm as they look to sweep the Charleston Dirty Birds.

High Point 7, Long Island 1

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – The High Point Rockers got back on the winning track with a 7-1 win over the Long Island Ducks on Saturday night at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. Jerry Downs blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and starting pitcher Jheyson Manzueta struck out six in his six innings to highlight the Rockers’ winning effort.

Downs’ homer, his third of the year, erased an early 1-0 deficit and put High Point on top 3-1. Long Island had scored the first run of the game in the second when Deibinson Romero doubled to left, moved to third on a ground out by Joe DeCarlo and then scored on a wild pitch by Manzueta.

Downs’ homer scored Zander Wiel and Logan Morrison ahead of him. Wiel had walked and Morrison had singled.

High Point added two more runs in the sixth when Quincy Latimore singled and Ben Aklinski doubled to put runners at second and third. Mike Gulino then grounded a ball that went under the glove of Ducks’ shortstop Deven Marrero and allowed Aklinski and Latimore score to put the Rockers up 5-1.

The Rockers posted another crooked number in the eighth in extending their lead to 7-1. Gulino’s sacrifice fly plated Latimore, and Downs, who had reached on a walk, would come around to score on a passed ball.

Manzueta (1-1) went six innings, allowing just four hits while not issuing a walk and recording six strikeouts. Ryan Dull struck out the side in the seventh before Adam Choplick pitched a perfect eighth inning and Bryce Hensley did the same in the ninth. Long Island’s Akeel Morris (0-1) took the loss.

The Rockers and Ducks will conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. The Rockers will start a six-game series at home on Tuesday, May 17 against the Lexington Legends at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point.

LANCASTER, Pa. – For the second consecutive night, York made a grand something out of nothing.

The Revolution scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning after the first two batters were retired and went on to defeat the Lancaster Barnstormers, 11-3, for York’s second consecutive win at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Jack Kenley opened the uprising against Cameron Gann (1-2) with a double into the right field corner.  Lenin Rodriguez singled up the middle to break a 1-1 tie.  Gann hit Troy Stokes, Jr. with a pitch and walked Elmer Reyes to load the bases.  Melky Mesa took Gann out of the yard to right center for a grand slam and a 6-1 lead.

York would strike for five more off the bullpen in the seventh inning.  J.C. Encarnacion delivered the knockout blow to Chase Johnson after the right-hander had posted 2 1/3 scoreless innings, with a two-run single into right center.  Stokes added three more to the coffers with a double out of the reach of right fielder Kelly Dugan to plate the final runs of the night.

Lancaster’s runs all came on solo homers.  Dugan cracked his fifth of the season to right field with two outs in the first for the quick 1-0 lead.  LeDarious Clark slammed the other two, a drive to right center in the sixth and a titanic blast to left center off Duke von Schamann in the ninth.

Eduardo Rivera (1-0) fired the first six innings, yielding three hits and two runs.  He walked two and struck out seven.  Von Schamann worked the final three for his first save.

The series concludes at 1:00 on Sunday.  Lancaster will send right-hander Dominic DiSabatino (1-2) to the mound against right-hander Nick Travieso (1-1).  Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 12:55.
