Southern Maryland 13, Long Island 2

(8/7/2022, Waldorf, MD) The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and Long Island Ducks were held off the board until the bottom of the fourth inning.  From there, Southern Maryland went on to post crooked numbers in four consecutive innings en route to a 13-1 victory.

Daryl Thompson (W, 11-2) dominated in tonight’s ballgame, pitching eight innings, allowing only one run while striking out nine.  Thompson was especially good early, striking out seven batters in the first three innings.

The Blue Crabs scored the first run in the fourth inning.  Braxton Lee led off the inning with a single, while Akeel Morris (L, 4-9) struggled with control from there.  Morris walked three consecutive batters, forcing in Braxton Lee to give Southern Maryland a 1-0 lead.  After a sacrifice fly, Mike Falsetti hit a base hit the other way, giving the Blue Crabs a 3-0 edge.

After the Ducks scored once in the top of the fifth, the Blue Crabs struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs.  Braxton Lee came home on a sacrifice fly, while David Harris scored on a wild pitch, putting the Blue Crabs ahead 5-1.  Southern Maryland extended the lead on a two-RBI single from Michael Baca and an RBI single from Jack Sundberg, giving the Blue Crabs an 8-1 lead.

The Blue Crabs added two more runs in the sixth inning when Zach Collier crushed an RBI triple into the right field corner, scoring Alex Crosby, while Collier later scored on a wild pitch, putting the Blue Crabs on top 10-1.

Southern Maryland kept the scoring going in the seventh inning off of Sandy Baez.  After back-to-back singles, Michael Wielansky drilled a three-run shot over the wall in left-center field, giving the Blue Crabs a 13-1 lead.

The Ducks got one run back in the ninth off of Dalton Geekie, with the Blue Crabs ultimately winning 13-2.  With the victory, the Blue Crabs move to 65-29, and 17-11 in the second half.  The Blue Crabs conclude their homestand with a three-game series against the High Point Rockers beginning on Tuesday at 6:35 pm.

High Point 11, Gastonia 5

GASTONIA, N.C. - The Gastonia Honey Hunters fell to the High Point Rockers by an 11-5 score on Sunday evening at Caromont Health Park.

Roger Bernal got the start for the Honey Hunters, making his third Atlantic League start this season. Bernal was also carrying a perfect 2-0 record on the year, including a no-hitter against the Legends on July 27th.

Craig Stem got the ball for High Point, making his fourth start against Gastonia, still seeking his first decision against the South Division leaders.

High Point jumped on the Gastonia right-hander early, as Michael Russell and Ben Aklinski hit back-to-back home runs to open the contest for the Rockers. The home runs for High Point gave Stem a 2-0 advantage before he took the mound on a day that seemed to favor the offenses on this warm day at Caromont Health Park.

After Gastonia plated a run in the bottom half of the first, High Point stretched their lead with a two-run second inning, as Tyler Ladendorf and Giovanny Alfonzo scored in a three-hit second stanza.

In the third inning, Gastonia closed the gap on a RBI from Luis Roman, scoring Joseph Rosa, who reached on his second double of the game. The run-scoring knock cut the lead for High Point to 4-2.

In the fourth, High Point got on the board again as Mike Gulino lifted a two-run homer to left center field, extending the lead to 6-2. A Ben Aklinski single two batters later scored Russell and chased Roger Bernal from the game, trailing 7-2.

In the fifth, Tyler Ladendorf hit the fourth High Point homer of the day, a line shot to left center field off Gastonia reliever Ezequiel Zabaleta, making it an 8-2 ballgame.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Gastonia got consecutive singles from Darian Sandford and Jack Reinheimer, giving the Honey Hunters a chance to cut into the Rockers lead. Two batters later, Zach Jarrett launched a drive to left field that landed atop the batting cage, getting Gastonia back to within three at 8-5 behind.

Stem was able to complete five innings for High Point before handing the ball over to Junior Rincon.

Rincon held off the Honey Hunters, bridging two innings of scoreless relief.

In the eighth, High Point went back to work, as Russell scored on a RBI double by Aklinski, pushing the lead back up to 9-5. Aklinski´s double came off Gastonia reliever Dakota Chalmers, who came on in the eighth, replacing Franklin Van Gurp.

In the ninth, Logan Morrison and Tyler Ladendorf hit the Rockers´ fifth and sixth home runs of the day, putting High Point ahead 11-5. The home run for Ladendorf was his second of the day and his third of the series.

Roger Bernal took the loss for the Honey Hunters, his first setback in Gastonia this season. Craig Stem did pick up his first decision of the season against Gastonia, advancing his mark to 4-3 on the year.

One bright spot for Gastonia was a 12-hit attack, led by five players with multi-hit games. Joseph Rosa and Jack Reinheimer collected three hits apiece in the loss. Zach Jarrett clubbed his 14th homer of the season, driving in four runs against the Rockers on Sunday.

The High Point win gives the Rockers consecutive series wins against the Honey Hunters, making them the only South Division team with multiple series wins against Gastonia.

Following a day off on Monday, the Honey Hunters begin a four-game series against the Staten Island Ferry Hawks on Tuesday afternoon.

Lancaster 10, Staten Island 6

LANCASTER, Pa. - Andretty Cordero went 4-for-5, and Anderson Feliz drove in four runs as the Lancaster Barnstormers rolled to a 10-6 victory at Clipper Magazine Stadium early Sunday evening.

It was Lancaster’s ninth straight win and kept the Barnstormers 3 ½ games ahead of Southern Maryland in the North and even with the Wild Health Genomes in a potential wild card race.

In the bottom of the first, Melvin Mercedes led off with a single and Cordero followed with a double off the gate in right center.  Jacob Barfield produced the first run with a sacrifice fly, and Feliz built a 3-0 lead off Francisco Carrillo (0-2, 0-5) with his sixth homer of the season.

Cordero doubled home Trace Loehr in the second for a 4-0 lead and singled Loehr home in the fourth as the advantage stretched to 5-1.  Trayvon Robinson singled home a run later in the fourth, and the Barnstormers salted the game away with a four-run sixth.  Loehr again the uprising started, this time with a single to left center.  He took second on an infield out, stole third and rode home on Cordero’s single to right.  Following a walk of Barfield and Robinson being hit by a pitch, Feliz drilled a double past third base to cap Lancaster’s scoring.

Cameron Gann (6-8) gave Lancaster a solid five-inning start, yielding only one hit, a first inning single by Angel Aguilar.  Staten Island scored in the third on a walk, wild pitch, passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Antoine Duplantis.

The Ferryhawks had a better evening against the Lancaster bullpen.  Andres Noriega singled home a run in the seventh.  Two more crossed in the eighth, one on a Chase Johnson wild pitch, the other on a sacrifice fly by Rusney Castillo.  Alfredo Reyes clubbed a two-run homer in the ninth, his first of the year, before Donald Goodson finally ended the game with a strikeout of Aguilar.

Lancaster will host the Long Island Ducks in a three-game series starting on Tuesday.  Oscar De La Cruz (6-1) will make the start for the Barnstormers against right-hander Scott Harkin (8-6) on Foodie Tuesday.  Fans may tune into Blue Ridge 11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 6:30.

NOTES:  The homer by Feliz is the only one by a Lancaster batter in the last five games…Feliz has nine RBI in the last four games…Cordero now has 88 RBI to pull within 15 of Aaron Herr’s franchise record…He has 129 hits on the season…Mercedes scored for the 76th time this season…The nine-game winning streak is three short of the franchise record, set in May, 2018.
