Former Charleston Dirty Birds pitcher Kevin Herget has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Tampa Bay Rays. Herget started the 2022 season with Charleston and was the opening night starter when the Dirty Birds began the season vs. Staten Island.
Herget made three starts for Charleston before his contract was purchased by Tampa Bay on May 6. While he did not earn a decision in any of his three starts, he pitched 17 innings and struck out 19 while posting a 4.24 ERA. He issued just three walks in those 17 innings.
A 5-10, 185-pound righty, Herget went 8-1 with a 2.45 ERA at Class AAA Durham this season before earning the call-up to the Rays. In 80.2 innings, he fanned 82 and issued just 11 walks.
