FerryHawks Will Honor the Life and Memory of Anthony Varvaro

Staten Island, NY- On Sunday, September 11, 2022, the Staten Island Community lost a piece of its heart with the passing of Anthony Varvaro. During his life, Varvaro was a selfless individual who always put others first, growing the game of baseball and serving the City of New York as a Port Authority Police Officer.

After voluntarily retiring from Major League Baseball, Varvaro dedicated his life to New York City baseball and teaching the youth through Snug Harbor Little League and District 24. Throughout the season, the FerryHawks have worn special jerseys honoring all seven Little League Charters that make up Staten Island’s District 24, a movement that Anthony had a key involvement with. The FerryHawks will be wearing these jersey’s one last time in Anthony's honor during our final game of the year on Sunday, September 18th, 2022. While 24 is the universal number for the district, it now has a deeper meaning to the community. As a Little Leaguer at West Shore, Anthony wore the number 24, sparking his love and passion for the game that he shared with the world.

Anthony’s connection with FerryHawks started at the very beginning of the team’s existence when he went out of his way to help organize our Little League signings. As the President of Snug Harbor Little League, Anthony went above and beyond to make each of these events a success and became a key piece of re-building professional baseball on Staten Island. Anthony’s selflessness to his Community and the FerryHawks will never be forgotten as the team will be donating all profits of our Staten Island District 24 jerseys to his family after Sunday's game.

In addition to the District 24 jerseys, the FerryHawks players will be wearing hats from all six Little League Charters. These hats will be signed and be put up for auction with all profits going towards the Vavaro family as well. A select number of jerseys will be signed with every hat being signed by the player that wore it. We are asking the #FerryHawkFamily to rally together and support this cause through the game we all know and love, baseball. Please consider bidding on any of the game-used items or donating directly through GoFundMe.
