Gastonia 12, High Point 5

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Gastonia’s Zach Jarrett hit a pair of home runs and the Honey Hunters jumped out to a 6-0 lead and held on to take a 12-5 decision from the High Point Rockers on Saturday night in front of 2,277 fans at Truist Point. It was just the third loss of the season for the Rockers as their record stands at 12-3 and remains the best in the Atlantic League.

Jarrett led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to break the 0-0 tie. Jarrett’s homer was followed by a three-run shot from Lamar Briggs as the Honey Hunters scored six times on four hits off High Point starter Brandon Leibrandt (L, 0-1). Jarrett’s solo shot leading off the fifth gave Gastonia a 7-0 lead.

The Rockers countered with a Ben Aklinski homer with nobody on in the fifth to make it a 7-1 game. But Gastonia again responded, scoring two more in the top of the sixth for a 9-1 advantage.

High Point rallied with four runs in the sixth to close the gap to 9-5. Walks to John Daly and Michael Russell set the stage for a John Nogowski RBI single, followed by a run-scoring single from Aklinski and a two-run single from Ryan Grotjohn.

But that would be all the scoring for the Rockers as Gastonia relievers Bryan Blanton and Tyler Thomas kept High Point scoreless over the final three innings.

Gastonia starter Ian McKinney (W, 1-1) retired the first 13 Rockers he faced and didn’t allow a base runner until Aklinski’s homer in the fifth. He allowed just one run over 5.1 innings while striking out six.

The Rockers finished with just four hits with Aklinski getting two of them.

The Rockers and Honey Hunters play the final game and the rubber match of their three-game series on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at Truist Point. It is Nurses Appreciation Day with all nurses receiving 50 percent off their ticket order with their medical ID. Kids and moms get to run the bases following the game.

Lexington 9, Charleston 8

(May 13, 2023) CHARLESTON, WV – The Clocks would take the win in the second game of the series against the Charleston Dirty Birds with a score of 9-8.

The Clock’s bats were hot early in WV, starting off the game with a sharp groundball hit by Manuel Geraldo to centerfield. Connor Owings would follow suit with a two-run homer. The Clocks would not score for the remainer of the first inning.

After shutting out the Dirty Birds in the second inning, the Clock’s would score again in the top of the third inning with, yet another homerun hit by Ronnie Dawson. The two-run homer would increase the Clock’s lead to four.

Ronnie Dawson would add to his productive night with an RBI in the top of the sixth inning. Dawson would single on a line drive to right fielder Terry Fuller. Pete Yorgen scores, and Jesus Tavarez would advance to third.

The Dirty Bird’s Bobby Bradley would pick up an RBI of his own in the inning on a line drive to right field, scoring the Birds first runs of the game. Montrell Marshall and Dwight Smith Jr. score.

The Counter Clocks would quickly strike back with a Thomas Dillard single on a line drive to right field. Dillard would pick up two RBIs on the play, scoring Connor Owings and Logan Brown.

On a wild play in the top of the eighth inning, Manuel Geraldo stole second base. After the throw to second, Ronnie Dawson would steal home, making the score 9-2 going into the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Dirty Birds would advance two more runners home making the score 9-4 going into the top of the ninth inning.

The Birds would not remain silent for the rest of the game. Bobby Bradley would turn this game into a nail biter after hitting a Dirty Birds grand slam. Cooper Brune would replace Clock’s pitcher Josh Martin. Then Eddy Tavarez would come in and close out the rest of the ninth innings.

Schmidt would be rewarded with the win for the Clocks, pitching 5 innings with an ERA of 3.60. Schmidt would throw 83 strikes and 42 balls during his time on the mound tonight.

Staten Island 6, Long Island 4

(Staten Island, N.Y., May 13, 2023) – The Staten Island FerryHawks defeated the Long Island Ducks 6-4 on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

The FerryHawks got started early in the first inning as Ricardo Cespedes came across the plate on a Luis Castro single to left field. In the second inning, Adrian Sanchez doubled to right field bringing in Justin Twine – who was playing in his first game with the FerryHawks. The scoring continued in the fourth as Mikey Edelman and Justin Twine scored on a Ricardo Cespedes double to right making it 4-0 FerryHawks.

The script flipped in the Duck’s favor with a Dustin Woodcock homer in the 5^th and an Alex Dickerson homer in the 6^th. In the 7^th, Ducks catcher Chance Sisco was brought home on Philip Caulfield ground out to second, closing the gap to 4-3 Ducks.

Justin Twine arrived JUST IN TIME, tanking an opposite field solo homerun in the 8^th inning to extend the lead to 5-3. Adrian Sanchez followed up the newcomer’s blast by bringing in Zach Racusin to make it 6-3 Hawks.

The Ducks made one last effort in the 9^th as Adeiny Hechavarria scored on a Dustin Woodcock ground out. However, that wasn’t enough as the FerryHawks secured a 6-4 victory to move to 3-9 on the season!

FerryHawks starter Ivan Piñeyro (1-0) earned the win with a final line of 6 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. James Pazos pitched 2 innings in relief to hold the lead, and Pedro Payano entered in the 9^th to pick up his first save of the season.

So. Maryland 14, York 2

(May 13, 2023 – York, Pa.):  A pair of big innings spoiled the chances at a third straight win for the York Revolution who dropped Saturday night’s contest to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 14-2 at WellSpan Park. The Revs will go for the series win when they wrap up their opening nine-game homestand on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Revs starter Denson Hull got out of trouble in the first inning after a Braxton Lee single, a hit by pitch of David Harris who left the game due to injury, and a walk that loaded the bases with two outs. An inning-ending grounder off the bat of Jose Rosario to Trent Giambrone at short allowed Hull to get out of the inning with no damage done.

Such an escape eluded the Revs in the third inning as two walks and a single set the table for the Crabs. With one out, Hull got a grounder to third but third baseman Drew Mendoza’s throw sailed into right field as a potential inning-ending double play ball turned into the game’s first two runs. Southern Maryland took full advantage as Ryan Haug hit an RBI double to center and Ian Yetsko lofted a sacrifice fly to plate another run as the Blue Crabs built a 4-0 lead.

Hull (0-2) rebounded to put up zeroes in the following two innings, but Southern Maryland blew the game open by scoring seven runs on three hits and three walks in a third of an inning against reliever Karl Blum. Felix Aberouette had a two-run single after a bases loaded walk to Braxton Lee. Rosario provided a sac fly and Yetsko produced a run-scoring bloop single, with the other runs crossing on wild pitches.

The Revs got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Giambrone singled and Tomo Otosaka smoked a double down the left field line. With second and third and no outs, Nellie Rodriguez drove one to deep right field for a sacrifice fly RBI and Mendoza plated a run with a ground ball to second as the Revs cut it to 11-2.

Southern Maryland starter Ian Kahaloa (1-1) allowed just those two runs on four hits in six innings for the win, walking two and striking out four.

Southern Maryland scored another run on three singles and a Yetsko sacrifice fly in the eighth, while Michael Wielansky tagged a two-run homer to left off of Andrew Gross in the ninth to cap the scoring on his second long ball of the series.

The Revs will look to claim the series on their final home game of the homestand as Tom Sutera (1-0, 0.96) goes against RHP Jared Burch (0-2, 4.66) at 2 p.m. on Sunday.  It is Wrestling Throwdown day. The Revs will play their first game as Ritmo de York presented by Bilingual Conexion. It is also Sunday Funday presented by Weis Markets with pre-game autograph session, pre-game catch on the field, and post-game kids round the bases. Notes: The Revs allowed a season-high in runs (14), hits (13), and walks (8). Jacob Rhinesmith picked up the Revs’ first outfield assist of the season on a double play in the ninth. Giambrone extended his hitting streak to eight consecutive games with his sixth inning single. Otosaka (2-for-4) has multiple hits in four of his first five, and is now 11-for-21 with the Revs; both of his hits were doubles, giving him four doubles in five games with York. Mendoza’s RBI was his 13th of the year and 11th in his last nine games.
