High Point 4, Gastonia 3

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point Rockers rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth inning behind a pair of rookies to post a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Gastonia on Sunday afternoon at Truist Point.

On Sunday, it was a pair of youngsters who led the late charge for the Rockers. Catcher Brian Parreira stroked a solo homer in the seventh to pull the Rockers within one run at 3-2 and then singled home the tying run in the ninth. Leftfielder John Daly beat out an infield grounder, allowing Ryan Grotjohn to score the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth.

High Point starter Liam O’Sullivan went five innings and allowed five hits while striking out three. But O’Sullivan’s grit helped him keep the Honey Hunters offense mostly in check. He was aided by a defense that saw Daly leap in front of the left field fence to rob Gastonia’s Cole Freeman of home run to end the second inning.

“Liam pitched his butt off,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe. “That’s as good as I’ve seen him throw. He kept the ball down in the zone and he gave us a chance to win.

“It was good to see the young kids come through when we really needed them,” said Keefe. “Brian really caught a great game tonight and his home run got us going. And Daly robbed that home run early in the game as well.”

Gastonia touched O’Sullivan for a single run in the first when shortstop Ryan Grotjohn made an errant throw on a grounder by Jack Reinheimer. Reinhimer would steal second and score on a single by J.C. Escarra.

High Point tied the game in the third when Daly drew a walk, stole second and scored on a single by John Nogowski. The Honey Hunters added two more runs in the fifth when Lamar Briggs singled with two outs, and was followed by Reinheimer’s single. Escarra doubled into the rightfield corner to score both runners for a 3-1 Gastonia advantage.

The Rockers trailed 3-1 when Parreira led off the seventh with a solo homer, his second of the year, to cut the deficit to 3-2. The eighth inning started with walks to Ben Aklinski and Grotjohn before Gastonia reliever Sal Romano struck out Daikang Yoh for the first out. Parreira then singled to right to plate Aklinski with the tying run as Grotjohn moved to third. With two outs, Daly hit a grounder to short but he was able to beat the throw to first as Grotjohn scored the go-ahead run.

“John doesn’t know how good he can be and he’s still learning the game but that’s what we’re here to help him do,” said Keefe. “I’ve never been so happy to see a ground ball like he hit because I knew, with his speed, he wasn’t going to let anybody beat him to first base.”

By taking two out of three games from the Honey Hunters, the Rockers have now won all five of their Atlantic League series.  “It was another series win at home and to be able to leave here 13-3, we feel pretty good about that,” said Keefe.

Jeremy Rhoades (W, 3-0) pitched a three-up, three-down eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts to earn the win. Ryan Dull (S, 3) struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth to earn the save. Romano (L, 0-1) took the loss for Gastonia.

Daly stole three bases on the day, one off the club record. Parreira led the Rockers with two hits and a pair of RBI. Escarra accounted for two of Gastonia’s five hits on the day.

The Rockers are now 13-3 and continue to own the best record in the Atlantic League, holding a 2.5 game advantage over Gastonia (10-5).

High Point will have Monday off and then will start a three-game series at Southern Maryland on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Rockers fans can follow the team on the road via the Mixlr audio app or on FloBaseball. The series will pit the two records in the ALPB as Southern Maryland will enter the series at 11-4 on the season.

So. Maryland 6, York 1

(Sunday, May 14th, York) The Blue Crabs found themselves in their second rubber match to close out their first road trip of the series. Southern Maryland had dominated the day before by blowing out the Revolution 14-2; the rookie Jared Burch climbed the hill on Mother's Day.

The Revs jumped out to an early lead as Trent Giambrone hit his second home run of the series to make it 1-0. An inning later, JT Reed swiped second base, and a throwing error allowed him to move to third base; Ryan Haug would drive him in and tie the game 1-1.

With Burch cruising through the York order, the Blue Crabs got some help from Braxton Lee and K.C. Hobson, as Lee doubled to lead off the frame, and Hobson would drive him in with a two-run jack into the upper concourse to make it 3-1. The next inning would see Southern Maryland score two more runs from a Garret Kueber single and a Hobson hot shot.

In the ninth, Lee hit a towering fly ball that got over the right field wall for his second home run and be the final tally as the Blue Crabs took the series over their North Division foes 6-1.

The Crab's pitching staff was unhittable against York, as the team only allowed three hits all game and just one run; the bullpen was spotless between Jacque Pucheu, James Dykstra, Isaac Mattson, and Andre Scrubb as they bridged Burch to his first professional win.

After 15 games, the Blue Crabs are 11-4, winning four out of the five series they have played. Tomorrow is an off-day for Southern Maryland. They will prepare for a six-game homestand at Regency Furniture with matchups against the High Point Rockers and the Staten Island FerryHawks. Tuesday's game is scheduled for a 6:35 first pitch; fans can buy tickets here or tune into all the action on FloSports.

Frederick 7, Lancaster 0
Frederick 8, Lancaster 7

After their first win on Friday, Frederick returned on Sunday for a twin bill with the defending champion Lancaster Barnstormers.

Frederick once again got the scoring started in game one, with a base hit by Kole Cottam to score Osvaldo Abreu.

With two gone in the bottom of the third inning, it was Craig Dedelow who launched a home run to make it 2-0. It was Dedelow’s sixth home run of the year, and his first since game five of the season, the final game of his five game HR streak.

Kole Cottam kept the surge going with a longball of his own, going deep for a two-run blast to make it 4-0 Frederick in the fourth.

Dustin Beggs was the star on the hill in game one, and Lancaster only had one real opportunity to threaten. Three Frederick errors led to runners on the corners and two outs for the Barnstormers, but Beggs was able to punch out Jack Conley looking to end the threat without any damage.

Frederick got one more big swing in the sixth, and it again came from Craig Dedelow, who drove yet another ball out, this time a three-run shot to extend the lead to 7-0. It was the first multi-HR game in Frederick ALPB history.

Dustin Beggs capped of a historic outing of his own by tossing a perfect seventh, locking down a complete game, two-hit shutout, the first complete game and shutout in club history (seven innings). Frederick closed game one victorious by a 7-0 margin.

Frederick got the ball rolling in game two, and it was once again off the bat of Craig Dedelow. After Becker walked, Dedelow drove another home run to center field, his eighth on the young season to make it 2-0 quickly.

Lancaster, who had been held to just one run in the first two games of the series, exploded for a big five run second inning. After they loaded the bases against lefty Winston Lavendier, Melvin Mercedes tied the game up with a two-run double. A batter later, Trayvon Robinson drove a ball to the warning track in center field, a sac fly to score Jake Hoover and give his club a 3-2 lead. Next was Andretty Cordero, who had been held hitless in the series to that point, golfing a two-run homer over the left field wall to make it 5-2.

In what was a common theme throughout the afternoon for both teams, it did not take Frederick long to answer in the third. After Luke Becker led off the inning with a triple, Dedelow scored him on a base hit to center. Dedelow finished the twin bill with seven RBIs, and nine in the series as a whole.

After Dedelow swiped second, it was Raudy Read, in just his second game with the team, who clubbed an absolute moonshot to left field that cleared all three levels of the outfield signage, tying the game at 5 apiece.

The next big swing came in the fourth inning, courtesy of Nicco Toni, a two-run blast to put his team ahead.

Lancaster answered quickly courtesy of Joseph Carpenter in the fifth, who drove a solo HR out to right center field.

After a scoreless eighth inning by Jeff Johnson, it was up to Arnaldo Hernandez to try to hold a one run game in the ninth inning.

After getting the first batter to fly out, Sandoval hit a base hit to the left side, and followed with a swipe of second base. After a walk to Carpenter, a flyout moved Sandoval up to third base, and brought the final hope to the plate in the form of Chris Proctor.

Down to his last strike, Proctor knocked a base hit to center field to tie the game. Carpenter tried to score the go-ahead run but was cut down at the plate, sending the game to the bottom half of the seventh all tied up.

Frederick got the first two runners on, but a subsequent flyout and strikeout suddenly but a shadow of doubt to the walkoff possibility. After Cottam walked, it was Leobaldo Cabrera who dug in

Cabrera hit a soft fly ball to shallow center field, and second baseman Trace Loehr tried to make the sliding play over his shoulder. To Frederick’s fortune, it popped in and out of his glove, allowing Becker to score the winning run, and give them both their first walkoff and first sweep in franchise history with the 8-7 game two victory

Frederick returns to action on Tuesday for the second leg of the six game homestand as they welcome the Lexington Counter Clocks to town. Tuesday’s game will begin at 7 PM with gates opening at 6 PM.
