Former Baltimore Scout and Lancaster Coach to Become Pitching Coach
(Waldorf, Md., March 9, 2016) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs have announced the addition of pitching coach Bill Bliss to the 2016 coaching staff.
Bliss, 46, joins manager Jeremy Owens, and hitting coach Jake Opitz to round out the field staff for the 2016 season. He replaces former major leaguer Dan Reichert, who departed at the end of last season.
Bliss has plenty of baseball experience on his resume: He became a scout for the Baltimore Orioles in 2002, and served as pitching coach for the Philadelphia Phillies New York-Penn League affiliate for three seasons from 2006-2008. Bliss also served as the pitching coach for the Lancaster Barnstormers in 2009.
A Stoneboro, Pennsylvania native, Bliss was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 3rd round of the 1991 MLB Draft out of Villanova University. He went on to spend three seasons in the Cubs’ organization and one in the Colorado Rockies organization. His best season came in 1991 while pitching for single-A Peoria where Bliss threw 20 games out of the bullpen, recording six saves in 19.1 innings pitched.
“Having Bill serve as our pitching coach is a huge asset for our ball club” said Blue Crabs Manager Jeremy Owens. “His experience as both a pitcher and a coach at the professional level will help guide our pitching staff.”
