Brownell Becomes Ducks All-Time Innings Pitched Leader

05/26/2016 7:00 AM -

Right-hander earns second franchise career record

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 25, 2016) – Long Island Ducks right-handed pitcher John Brownell became the franchise’s all-time innings pitched leader on Wednesday, May 25 during the Ducks’ 15-5 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip, N.Y.

“The Ducks are a great organization to be a part of,” said Brownell following the game. “There have been a lot of great players to come through this organization, and it’s nice to be up there among them.”

With six and one-third innings of work on Wednesday, Brownell has now accrued 589 and two-thirds innings pitched in his five seasons with the Ducks. That number surpasses the total of 587 and one-third innings set by left-hander Randy Leek while pitching for Long Island from 2007-10. After picking up the victory, the right-hander is now just one win and two starts shy of tying the all-time franchise record in both categories currently held by Leek (40 wins, 91 games started).

In five seasons with Long Island, the 32-year-old has compiled a 39-27 record with a 3.69 ERA and a franchise-record 449 strikeouts during the regular season. His best season came in 2015 when he compiled a 12-6 record with a 3.38 ERA and a single season team record 146 strikeouts in 26 starts. He became the second pitcher in Ducks history to be named the Atlantic League’s Pitcher of the Year, joining Mike Loree (2011). The former Phillies draft pick won back-to-back Atlantic League championships in 2012 and 2013 and was named the Championship Series Most Valuable Player in 2013 after collecting a pair of wins over the Somerset Patriots.

“John has been a workhorse for us since joining the team in 2012,” says Ducks President/GM Michael Pfaff. “We want to congratulate him on this tremendous achievement and look forward to watching him attempt to break even more team records.”

The Long Island Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play their home games at Bethpage Ballpark. For further information, call (631) 940-DUCK or visit www.liducks.com.
