York 6, Charleston 0

(July 14, 2022 – Charleston, WV):  Nick Travieso fired six dominant innings as the York Revolution shut out the Charleston Dirty Birds, 6-0 on Thursday evening at Appalachian Power Park.  The Revs close their road trip with back-to-back victories and three of the last four.

 The Revs got off to a fast start, ignited by leadoff man Yefri Perez who cracked a double to right-center on an 0-2 offering from Charleston starter Stephen Chamblee to start the night.  Perez beat a throw to third on a fielder’s choice and scored when Melky Mesa lined a sac fly to left for the game’s first run. Carlos Franco followed with a tape-measure two-run homer to right that clanged off an electrical transformer outside the ballpark for a 3-0 lead. 

 It was another historic shot for Franco whose 25th of the season moved him into a tie for third most in a season in franchise history (Chris Nowak 2011, Nellie Rodriguez 2021), and established the most by a left-handed hitter surpassing Jason Aspito’s total of 24 in 2008.  It was also the 51st home run of Franco’s Revs career, tying Isaias Tejeda for fifth on the all-time career list.

 York added to the lead in the top of the fourth.  JC Encarnacion set the stage with a leadoff infield single and stole second.  After Encarnacion moved to third on Josue Herrera’s fly ball to deep center, Troy Stokes Jr. walked and stole second and Jack Kenley followed with a sac fly to center field for a 4-0 lead.

 Two more crossed in the sixth.  Encarnacion reached on an error to open the inning before swiping his second bag of the evening.  Herrera again advanced him with a productive out on a grounder to first, setting up Stokes Jr. who delivered the Revs’ franchise record-tying third sac fly of the game on a ball in the air to right.  It marked the most sac flies by the Revs in a game since June 17, 2018 at Southern Maryland.  Kenley followed by walloping a homer to right, his second of the season, increasing the lead to 6-0.

 That came in support of Travieso (3-5) who was brilliant in six shutout innings, allowing just two hits including a broken bat grounder in the third and a sixth inning infield single, while striking out six.

 Brett de Geus stranded three singles in a scoreless seventh out of the Revs bullpen, logging his ninth scoreless outing in 11 appearances.  Duke von Schamann handled a scoreless eighth and Josh Martin closed it out with a scoreless ninth, stranding Yovan Gonzalez at third after a triple to preserve the Revs’ fourth shutout victory of the season.

Staten Island 5, Southern Maryland 4

STATEN ISLAND, NY— David Martinez threw seven innings of one-hit baseball Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium, aiding in Staten Island’s 5-4 rubber-game win against Southern Maryland. Despite scoring the game’s first five runs, the FerryHawks squeaked by the Blue Crabs with a one-run win after Southern Maryland’s four-run eighth inning. The FerryHawks have won seven of their first nine second-half Atlantic League games.  

 The FerryHawks supported Martinez early, scoring two first-inning runs against left-hander Nick Wells. The southpaw issued three consecutive two-out walks, loading the bases for Rusney Castillo. Playing in just his second FerryHawks game, Castillo ripped a base-hit up the middle to score a pair and give the ‘Hawks a 2-0 advantage.  

 Staten Island tacked on another run in the third inning on Dilson Herrera’s sacrifice fly that plated Angel Aguilar.  

 A three-run cushion proved plenty for Martinez (1-1), who allowed just a third-inning double to Joe DeLuca. In his third start of the season, Martinez struck out six and walked two, issuing 88 pitches in his seven scoreless frames.  

 Wells (3-3) lasted four innings, giving up three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks.  

 The FerryHawks extended their lead in the top of the eighth inning with two insurance runs against reliever Dalton Geekie. The frame began with an Angel Aguilar walk and Ricardo Cespedes single, before Dilson Herrera struckout. With runners on the corners, Rusney Castillo supplied his third RBI with another single, plating Aguilar for a 4-0 game. Justin O’Conner’s sacrifice fly would score Cespedes for a 5-0 advantage.  

 The Blue Crabs climbed back into the game in the eighth inning, taking advantage of Martinez’ absence. Joe Kuzia, who had allowed one earned run or fewer in 25 of his first 26 appearances, failed to retire the first four batters he faced. DeLuca’s leadoff home run not only provided the Blue Crabs with their first run, but their second hit as well. After a Michael Baca single, Jack Sundberg double, and Mike Wielansky single, Edgardo Alfonso took the ball from Kuzia and gave it to Connor Law. An Alex Crosby fielder’s choice, with two FerryHawks throwing errors, allowed a pair of runs home to cut the once 5-0 lead to 5-4. With runners on the corners and one out, Law induced a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Braxton Lee to preserve the one-run lead. 

 Victor Capellan locked down the bottom of the ninth inning, tossing a perfect frame for his 11thsave to give the FerryHawks the rubber game win, 5-4.  

 Staten Island (25-49) continues its three-game road trip on Friday night at York. RHP Dakota Freese gets the ball for the FerryHawks with first pitch at PeoplesBank Park scheduled for 6:30 PM.

Long Island 6, Lexington 1

Central Islip, N.Y., July 14, 2022) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lexington Legends 6-1 on Thursday morning in the final game of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

The Ducks struck for two runs in the opening inning on RBI singles from L.J. Mazzilli and Deibinson Romero off Legends starter Wes Albert. The Legends closed to within 2-1 in the second on Montrell Marshall’s RBI single to left off Ducks starter Bennett Parry. However, the Ducks got the run right back in the bottom of the frame on Alejandro De Aza’s RBI fielder’s choice.

 Long Island extended the lead to 5-1 in the fourth on a two-out, two-run single to left by Joe DeCarlo. A solo home run over the left field wall by Romero in the sixth rounded out the scoring.

 Parry did not factor into the decision but lasted two and two-thirds innings, allowing a run on three hits with three strikeouts. Ryan Meisinger (2-1) earned the win with two and one-third scoreless innings of relief, yielding a hit and three walks while striking out four. Albert (0-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and five walks over four innings with five strikeouts.

 Romero led the Flock offensively with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Mazzilli added two hits, an RBI and a run. Long Island’s bullpen combined to pitch six and one-third scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out 10 and retiring the final 16 Legends batters to come up to the plate.

 The Ducks begin a six-game road trip on Friday night when they open a three-game series against the Wild Health Genomes. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Wild Health Field. Fans can follow all the action on the Long Island Ducks Broadcast Network. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Lancaster 11, High Point 2

LANCASTER, Pa. - Nile Ball fired six shutout innings, and the Barnstormers rapped out 13 hits in a 11-2 victory over the High Point Rockers on Thursday to complete a three-game sweep at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

It was Lancaster’s eighth straight win and the club’s 11^th in a row at home.

Ball (6-3) allowed three hits and two walks over his start.  He struck out four.  High Point’s biggest threat came in the third.  Tyler Ladendorf looped a single into right, and Ben Aklinski followed with a line drive base hit that was bobbled by Trayvon Robinson for an error.  Lancaster opted to walk Logan Morrison intentionally, but Ball got Zander Wiel to ground into a force out at third.

Otherwise, the right-hander faced only two batters over the minimum.

Lancaster put up single runs in the first and third innings, both scored by Shawon Dunston, Jr., but it was in the fourth that the club finally got to starter Nick Evangelista (1-3).  Jake Hoover led off with a double to right center and scored when Trace Loehr followed with another double to the same gap.  Anthony Peroni singled home Loehr, and Devon Torrence laced a single into right.  Kyle Mott got the Rockers out of that inning and pitched a scoreless fifth.

The game was ripped open in the sixth.  Loehr led off with a single, and Nathan Bates walked two more to load the bases.  A wild pitch scored Loehr, and Andretty Cordero drew another walked as Bates left.  John Hayes’ first pitch was crushed out of the park to right center for a grand slam.  Andretty Cordero followed with another homer for a 10-0 lead.

High Point scored single runs in the seventh and eighth off Lancaster’s bullpen.

The Barnstormers entertain the Charleston Dirty Birds on Friday at 6:30.  Augie Sylk (4-7) will make the start for Lancaster against lefty Ryan Lawlor (4-2).  Fans may tune into the YouTube Channel at 6:25.

NOTES:  Melvin Mercedes went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games…Robinson’s slam was the club’s second of the season…Every member of the Lancaster lineup had at least one hit…Ball won his fifth straight decision and has a 2.20 ERA over that stretch…His season ERA is 3.01…Dunston has scored 29 runs in 32 games.

Gastonia 4, Kentucky 1

The Gastonia Honey Hunters got a three run homer from former Eastern Kentucky product Alex Holderbach to sweep the Wild Health Genomes 4-1 on Thursday evening at Wild Health Field.

Jerry Keel(6-3) was scintillating on the mound for Gastonia on Thursday, spinning six frames of scoreless work, earning his sixth win of the year. The California southpaw surrendered three hits on three walks, striking out six hitters.

Deadlocked in a scoreless game going into the seventh inning, Gastonia was able to break through in the frame, thanks to some timely hits and a helpful miscue from the Genomes.

A Zach Jarrett single with one out got the rally started, bringing Luis Castro to the plate. Castro grounded into a would-be double play to Genomes shortstop Gavin Johns. Johns, attempting to shuffle the ball to Clayton Mehlbauer, never got the flip to second, muffing the exchange to put runners at first and second.

The blunder would cost the Genomes, as Rayder Ascanio drove a ball through the right side of the infield, scoring Jarrett, giving Gastonia the 1-0 lead.

Holderbach would enter the narrative in a major way, launching a three-run shot to left, chasing Wild Health starter Ryan Kellogg(1-2) from the game.

From there, Gastonia called on the bullpen triumvirate of Euclides Leyer, Chad Sobotka and Jesus Balaguer to finish off the Genomes.

The bullpen trio would finish the deal, tossing three innings on two hits and one unearned run.

The win for Gastonia was their 52nd of the season and their 29th on the road this season. Tonight's win opens the second half of the Atlantic League South schedule at a perfect 8-0 pace. The winning streak is the club´s second longest, as the team won ten straight in late April, a franchise best.

The Honey Hunters welcome the Lexington Legends to Caromont Health Park for a three-game weekend series against the defending league champions. Reilly Hovis gets the ball for Gastonia.
