(Waldorf, MD) The Blue Crabs have agreed to terms with a relief pitcher and a backstop for the 2024 campaign. Hunter Schilperoort and Caleb Marquez are the third pair of players to join Southern Maryland.
Hunter Schilperoort, from Gilroy, California, is the first bullpen arm added to the Blue Crabs’ 2024 roster. The left hander pitched for University of the Pacific, spending one summer in the Cape Cod League with the Wareham Gatemen. Professionally, Hunter has played two seasons in the Pioneer League, one for Grand Junction, and one for Billings. In 36 appearances last season for the Mustangs, Schilperoort posted a 3.40 ERA through 42.1 innings with a whopping 55 strikeouts.
Catcher/First Baseman Caleb Marquez joins Southern Maryland after spending 2023 in the MLB Draft League. Caleb was drafted in the 39th round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. From Blue Springs, Missouri, Marquez played two seasons in Rookie Ball, and one in the Pioneer League with the Rocky Mountain Vibes. For the Vibes, Caleb had 19 hits in 19 games, with 4 home runs and 10 runs batted in.
