Long Island 7, Staten Island 1
(Staten Island, N.Y., May 22, 2025) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Staten Island FerryHawks 7-1 on Thursday night in the rubber game of a three-game series at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park. Long Island has now won 1,700 games as a franchise, more than any other team in the history of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
Long Island took a 1-0 first inning lead on Troy Viola’s opposite-field single to right off Staten Island starting pitcher Adalberto Mejia. The Flock made it 2-0 in their favor in the third when JC Encarnacion scored from third on a throwing error by way of a pickoff attempt at first base by reliever Trayson Kubo.
The FerryHawks got to within 2-1 the third on Nate Scantlin’s RBI single versus Ducks starter Zach Plesac. The Flock took a 4-1 advantage in the fifth courtesy of Viola’s RBI double and a Taylor Kohlwey sacrifice fly. The visitors added a run in the sixth thanks to a Chris Roller run-scoring double and closed out the scoring in the eighth on RBI base knocks from River Town and Encarnacion.
Plesac (3-1) earned the win after allowing just one run on five hits over six innings pitched, walking two and striking out a season-high eight as the right-hander tallied his third consecutive quality start. Mejia (0-3) suffered the loss, surrendering one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning while walking three batters.
Roller led the offensive attack by reaching base in all five plate appearances with three doubles, an RBI, three runs scored, two walks and a pair of stolen bases.
Long Island returns home on Friday, May 23, to open a three-game set with the Staten Island FerryHawks. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Lancaster 7, Hagerstown 5
Ariel Sandoval’s bat has come to life.
The outfielder with two championship rings as a Lancaster Stormer homered and drove in four runs early Thursday to lead the host club to a 7-5 victory over the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars in the finale of a three-game set at Penn Medicine Park.
With the victory, the Stormers notched their third straight series win.
Sandoval, serving as the DH for the Thursday matinee, ripped a go-ahead two-run single to left off Mike Kickham (0-3) in the bottom half of the third inning, capping a four-run frame, and later hit a decisive homer to right with a man aboard in the seventh.
Danny Amaral and Joseph Carpenter also singled in runs in the Lancaster third. Carpenter and Nick Lucky teamed up with doubles in the fifth for Lancaster’s other run.
The Boxcars notched all of their Thursday runs on homers. Gary Mattis connected following a leadoff error in the first inning, hammering a two-run drive to the right of the batter’s eye off starter Steven Lacey. Ossie Abreu hit a two-run homer to left in the sixth inning against Kyle Johnson to bring Hagerstown to a 5-4 deficit.
Mattis connected for a second time, off Phil Diehl, with a leadoff homer inside the right field foul pole to produce the game’s final run in the eighth.
Jackson Rees (2-1) was awarded the win in relief. The right-hander worked 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Ryley Gilliam survived a pair of two-out walks in the ninth for his third save.
The Stormers will entertain the York Revolution on Friday at 6:45. Lefty Keylan Killgore will take the hill for the Stormers against right-hander Wes Scott (1-1). Fans may tune into FloBaseball at 6:40 to catch the action.
NOTES: Sandoval’s homer, his second in two games, was the first by a Lancaster DH in 2025…He has seven RBI in the last two games…Lancaster pitchers recorded a season-high 15 strikeouts…Slater Schield had a pair of singles and has reached base in 14 of the 15 games he has played…Carpenter has hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games (20-61, .328).
Charleston 7, High Point 2
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The High Point Rockers had their four-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night with a 7-2 loss to the Charleston Dirty Birds at GoMart Park.
Each team rapped 10 hits but Charleston was able to make better use of theirs.
Despite the loss, the Rockers maintain the best record in the Atlantic League at 17-7 and hold a three-game lead over second place Lexington in the South Division.
Charleston’s Alsander Womack had a pair of hits including a double and three RBI to lead the Dirty Birds offense. J.J. Matijevic homered and drove in a pair of runs as well.
The Rockers were led by D.J. Burt’s three hits and Luis Gonzalez who accounted for the Rockers only runs with a two-run double in the seventh.
Charleston took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Rockers starter Brandon Backmaan (L, 2-1) hit James Nelson with a pitch to start the frame. Matijevic then hit a two-run homer as the Dirty Birds took their first lead in the series. Backman allowed a pair of runs to start the second on a pair of singles and walk. Then Womack delivered a two-run double to stake the Birds to a 6-0 advantage.
Charleston’s Kyle McGoiwen scattered six hits over six innings while striking out eight Rockers.
The Rockers open a three-game series at Gastonia on Friday night at CaroMont Health Park with first pitch slated for 7:00 p.m.
