Staten Island’s Maggi headed to Detroit Tigers
Staten Island FerryHawks infielder Drew Maggi had his contract purchased by the Detroit Tigers organization and will be reporting to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens.
Maggi was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Arizona State University. After spending over 1,200 games in the Minor Leagues with five different organizations, the infielder finally made his MLB Debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 26, 2023. Maggi recorded his first MLB hit and RBI in the Pirates 16-1 win over the Nationals at 33 years old on April 29th.
The MLB veteran played 29 games with the Staten Island FerryHawks, totaling 24 hits with 3 home runs in that time. He also collected 15 RBI and 4 stolen bases while playing all over the infield in his short stint with the team before being picked up by the Tigers.
The Atlantic League is widely recognized as being a successful second chance league. Players with all different levels of experience, ranging from college to MLB, all have a chance at being picked up and sent to affiliated ball while playing for the reputable Atlantic League teams.
Maggi is the 5th player signed out of Staten Island so far this season. Prior to Maggi’s contract being purchased by the Tigers, Shane Matheny got picked up by the Angels, Robert Brooks went to the Blue Jays organization, Robert Kaminsky was signed by the Mariners, and Taylor Motter inked a deal with the Leones de Yucatan.
Drew Maggi on his signing and time with the FerryHawks:
“I would like to thank everyone in the FerryHawks organization as well as the fans! I loved every minute of being a part of this organization. I am going to miss the team and the people around the building. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to continue my journey.”
