High Point Rockers 3, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 1

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Jack Conley slammed his first home run of the season in the sixth inning with one aboard to give the High Point Rockers a 3-1 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,025 at Truist Point.

With the game tied at 1-1, newcomer Braxton Davidson doubled and then scored on Conley’s homer to put the Rockers in front 3-1.

The Rockers at 27-10 continue to hold a nine-game lead over the Blue Crabs (18-19) in the Atlantic League’s Southern Division.

Southern Maryland’s Alejandro De Aza gave the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead in the first against High Point starter Kyle Barraclough (W, 5-0), singling home John Taylor who had doubled to lead off the game.

In the third, the Rockers tied the game when Luis Gonzalez slammed a double to center and scored on Drew Mendoza’s RBI single off Southern Maryland starter Ian Kahaloa.

Conley’s homer came against Crabs reliever Rafi Vazquez (L, 2-2).

The game was delayed for 33 minutes due to inclement weather in the bottom of the eighth.

When play resumed, High Point’s Kyle Halbohn retired all three Southern Maryland batters he faced, giving him his second save of the week and preserving the Rockers win.

Game two of the series is slated for Saturday at 6:35 pm at Truist Point.

NOTES: Asheville native Braxton Davidson was signed to the Rockers on Friday. In 2024 he played in both the Atlantic League and Mexican League. After starting the season in Gastonia, he joined the Saraperos de Saltillo where he hit .333. . .  Rockers’ CF Cody Wilson left the game after legging out an infield single in the second. He was replaced by Ian Yetsko for the remainder of the game. Yetsko hit his first triple as a Rocker in the sixth inning . . . Because the scheduled postgame fireworks show did not happen due to the storms, the Rockers will honor all tickets from Friday’s game at the next Fireworks Friday on June 27 when the Rockers face the Lancaster Stormers.

Long Island Ducks 11, Hagerstown Flying Boxcars 8

(Hagerstown, Md., June 6, 2025) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars 11-8 on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game series at Meritus Park.

Long Island took a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning on an RBI single by Troy Viola and a two-run double produced by Taylor Kohlwey against Hagerstown starting pitcher Casey Marshalwitz. The Flying Boxcars answered with four runs of their own in the home half of the frame to take their first lead of the ballgame, highlighted by a bases loaded walk to Ossie Abreu and a run-scoring groundout from Miles Williams versus Ducks starter Mitchell Senger.

The Flock went back ahead 5-4 in the second on a two-run home run to left field by Chrois Roller. Trailing 6-5 in the fourth, the visitors regained a one-run advantage at 7-6 on Cody Thomas’ RBI fielder’s choice and Viola’s run-scoring two-base hit. Down 8-7 in the sixth, the Flock got even on a River Town RBI base knock. Long Island took a 9-8 advantage in the eighth by way of Kole Kaler’s RBI doubled and added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth thanks to Ed Johnson’s two-run double.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Senger allowed seven runs on one hit in two and two-thirds innings pitched, walking seven and striking out one. Marshalwitz surrendered five runs on five hits across three innings of work, walking two while striking out one. Jonah Dipoto (1-0) notched his first win as a member of the Ducks with a scoreless inning on one hit allowed along with a walk and a strikeout. Donald Goodson (0-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, walking and striking out one. Lebanon Ironmasters 18, Staten Island FerryHawks 7

It’s like Clark Kent becoming Superman.

Every time that the Lancaster Stormers don the Lebanon Ironmaster capes, they start leaping tall buildings and going faster than speeding bullets.

Or at least dominate Atlantic League opponents.

The Ironmasters slugged five homers and took advantage of six first inning walks to drub the Staten Island FerryHawks, 18-7, Friday evening at Penn Medicine Park.

With the win, the Ironmasters remained unbeaten at 10-0 in their annual appearances at the stadium.

One-time Lancaster infielder Damon Dues opened the night with the first of what would be nine overall homers in the game.  That lead was short-lived.

After Trayson Kubo (0-1) retired Danny Amaral with his first pitch of the game, he walked Nick Lucky and Alex Isola around a single by Mason Martin.  Lebanon County native Joseph Carpenter and Ariel Sandoval put the Ironmasters ahead with RBI singles.  Dave Matthews walked for a 3-1 lead.  Yeison Coca hit a force play grounder for the fourth run, and a bad throw to third trying to catch Sandoval around the bag made it 5-1.  Lucky picked up his second walk of the inning to force home one more.  Martin cleared the bags with a double into the right field corner.

The homers accounted for the remaining nine runs.  Matthews went deep in the fourth with a man aboard.  Lucky and Isola connected in the fifth.

With Lebanon up, 14-7, heading into the bottom of the eighth, the FerryHawks went to spare catcher David Melfi in a mop up capacity.  Melfi, throwing “eephus” pitches about half of the time, surrendered a three-run homer to Amaral and a solo shot to Mason Martin, capping the evening.

For the second straight start against the FerryHawks, Noah Skirrow (5-1) gave a strong performance for five innings before faltering in the sixth.  Staten Island struck for two runs on three hits before his departure.  Michael McAvene took over, and Brandon Martorano greeted him with a fly ball to center that Amaral lost in the twilight.  A passed ball and wild pitch allowed both runners to score, and Tim Borden homered to right center, drawing the FerryHawks to within eight.

Martorano homered off Billy Sullivan in the eighth for the final Staten Island blow of the night.

A.J. Alexy (0-1) will make the start on Saturday against Staten Island lefty Shane Barringer (0-1).  Fans may tune into the game on FloBaseball at 6:40.

NOTES:  Martin had his 12th multi-hit game of the season but his first with more than two hits…Sandoval hit safely for the sixth straight game…Carpenter improved his average at home to .406 (26-64)…The club tied a season high with 11 walks and set a new high with the 18 runs and five homers…The average score on the homestand is 15-3.

Gastonia Ghost Peppers 15, Charleston Dirty Birds 4

GASTONIA, N.C. – The Ghost Peppers exploded for 15 runs on 16 hits Friday night and defeated Charleston 15-4 in front of a sellout crowd of 4,224.

The largest crowd in Gastonia’s franchise history watched the Peppers dominate the Birds, striking first in the opening frame and getting off to a 10-0 lead after scoring five runs in the fourth.

Gastonia hit three homers in the contest – Justin Wylie (10), Narciso Crook (8) and Kevin Watson Jr. (8).

Watson Jr. reached in all of his five trips to the plate on Friday, going 3-for-3 with two steals and three runs scored. The lefty hit the Ghost Peppers’ first grand slam of 2025 in the eighth inning to make it 15-1 in favor of the home team.

Justus Sheffield was brilliant for Gastonia, going six scoreless innings. The southpaw became the first pitcher on the staff to complete six innings this season, allowing five base runners – all of them being Charleston singles. He struck out five Dirty Birds.

After winning the 2024 South Division Championship rematch on Friday, the Peppers improved to 14-23 on the season, while Charleston fell to 19-18.

Gastonia looks to win the series on Saturday night, with first pitch at 7 p.m.

York Revolution 4, Lexington Legends 2

(June 6, 2025 – Lexington, Ky.):  Foster Pace worked another masterful outing and the York Revolution used long balls from Jeffrey Wehler and Marty Costes to take their weekend opener from the Lexington Legends, 4-2 on Friday night at Lexington Legends Ballpark.

Pace (4-1) helped get the Revs back on track after a high scoring series loss at home, navigating 6.2 strong innings with just two runs allowed on five hits. He walked only one and struck out five before handing it over to the back end of the Revs bullpen.

Lexington lefty Jack Lynch opened the game with 2.2 no-hit innings, but Costes and Brandon Lewis kept the third inning alive with two-out singles. That set the table for Wehler who planted a three-run homer just above the yellow line on the right field fence, opening the scoring with his sixth of the year as York led 3-0.

Pace retired 10 of his first 11 batters before dealing with his only hiccup of the evening when Brady Whalen and Curtis Terry connected on back-to-back homers with one out in the fourth, slashing the Revs’ lead to 3-2.

Costes got one of those runs back, nailing a 3-0 pitch from right hander Dustin Beggs over the wall in left for a solo shot, increasing the lead to 4-2 on his fourth of the year, having gone yard in each of the last three games.

York had leadoff batters reach and had multiple baserunners three times in the final four innings and were unable to add on, but the pitching staff made the lead stand up.

Pace worked through the heart of the order for a third time, stranding two runners when he retired Pedro Gonzalez on a fly out to end the sixth. He came back out to retire the first two batters on ground outs in the seventh before issuing his first walk of the night, snapping a 12.1-inning walkless streak.

Noah Denoyer entered and struck out Jerry Huntzinger looking to finish the seventh. Mauricio Llovera retired the top of the order 1-2-3 in the eighth, and Cam Robinson nailed down his league-leading ninth save with a perfect ninth.

The Revs improve to 24-13, continuing the best start to a season in franchise history as they maintain their four-game lead for first place in the North Division.

Notes: The Revs have won five straight on the road, anchored by their pitching as they have plated exactly four runs in all five of those victories and have allowed two runs or fewer in four of those five. Costes (3-for-4) has homered in three straight and has an RBI in eight consecutive games; he is now 11-for-23 (.478) with four homers on a six-game hitting streak. Wehler (2-for-4) has hit safely in six straight and is now 14-for-32 (.438) with four homers and 10 RBI over his past nine games. Former big league outfielder Jaylin Davis joined the team after being acquired from the Milwaukee Milkmen of the American Association in a trade earlier this week; Davis played center field and walked twice while stealing a pair of bases in his debut. Pace is now 3-0 with a 3.34 ERA over his last six outings. Denoyer picked up his team-leading fourth and his seventh scoreless outing in the last eight, while striking out his 30th batter of the season in just 15.1 innings. Llovera logged his third hold and third straight scoreless outing. Robinson has now worked six straight scoreless appearances.

Up Next: York will face Lexington again on Saturday night with first pitch anticipated at approximately 7:15 p.m. following Legends alumni weekend pregame ceremonies. York righty J.C. Ramirez (0-0, 15.00) squares off with Lexington’s Ben Ferrer (0-0, 3.60). Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at approximately 7 p.m.
