Lexington 11, High Point 3

HIGH POINT, NC.-  The High Point Rockers and Lexington Legends were deadlocked 1-1 through the first six innings on Friday night before the Legends exploded for 10 runs in the final three innings to subdue the Rockers 11-3 in front of 2,128 fans at Truist Point.

Lexington started its late surge in the seventh inning against reliever Matt Frisbee when he allowed a pair of hits and a walk to load the bases for the Legends.  Andy Atwood delivered a two-run double to put the Legends up 3-1 and Xane Washington’s two-run single gave Lexington a 5-1 advantage. Pedro Gonzalez then smacked a two-run homer as Lexington surged ahead 7-1.

Lexington starter Tanner Tully (W, 1-2) kept the Rockers in check through his six innings of work, allowing just three hits, one being a solo homer to Evan Edwards leading off the fourth that tied the game 1-1.

The Legends took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Colin Burgess singled and scored on a Brady Whalen single.

Lexington tacked on four more runs in the ninth off reliever Stevie Branche.  The Rockers rallied briefly in the ninth with Ben Aklinski blasting a solo homer and Nick Longhi driving in a run with a single.

The loss moves Lexington and High Point into a tie for the Atlantic League’s South Division with identical 13-6 records.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at 6:35 pm at Truist Point where fans will receive a free recyclable tote bag.

Lancaster 6, Long Island 4

Eight days prior, neither man wore a Lancaster jersey.  On Friday evening, Danny Amaral and Brandon Wagner led a come-from-behind win as the Stormers defeated the Long Island Ducks in the opener of a three-game series at Penn Medicine Park.

Amaral went 4-for-4 with a key hit during the seventh inning rally, and Wagner launched the deciding home run in the eighth as the Stormers fought back from a 4-0 deficit to take a 6-4 victory from the Ducks.

Lancaster has now won three of its last four games.

For 6 ½ innings, Friday night’s rain-delayed contest looked grim.  Zach Plesac had stymied Lancaster on three Amaral singles.  Long Island broke through against Keylan Killgore with an unearned run in the top of the fifth, and a triple by Cody Thomas along with sac fly by Justin O’Conner added a second run in the sixth.  A two-out uprising in the seventh off Christian Scafidi made it 4-0.

Lancaster’s rally started quickly against Tim Melville in the seventh as Joseph Carpenter grounded a single up the middle and Nick Lucky followed with his second homer of the season.  Two outs later, Yeison Coca was hit by a pitch.  Amaral, instead of swinging for a game-tying homer guided a single into right to extend the inning.

Then, the Stormers caught a break.  First baseman Taylor Kohlwey failed to control a grounder by Nick Ward, allowing the ball to get into right field as Coca scored to make it 4-3.  Mason Martin singled into center to tie the game.

Michael McAvene (1-0) survived a leadoff double by Kohlwey in the eighth to send the game into the bottom of the inning tied.  Carpenter again led off with a single to center and left for pinch runner LeDarious Clark, who was later thrown out trying to steal third.  However, Ariel Sandoval launched a long double to left, and Wagner followed with his blast off Mark Washington (1-2) over the tents in right.

On this night, there would be no ninth inning drama.  Kyle Johnson took the hill and fanned the side on 13 pitches for his first save of the season.

The Stormers will send Tim Brennan (0-1) to the mound on Saturday at 6:45 against Long Island lefty Juan Hillman (0-0).  Fireworks will follow.  Fans may tune in on FloBaseball, starting at 6:40.

NOTES:  Amaral has nine hits in the last three games…Wagner hit 20 homers for the Tampa Yankees in 2018…Sandoval’s double was his first extra base hit at home…Martin’s single in the seventh was his first hit in 13 at bats at home…Johnson got the call with four of Lancaster’s late inning relievers having worked both Wednesday and Thursday.

Gastonia 9, Staten Island 2

The Staten Island FerryHawks took on the Gastonia Ghost Peppers in the opening game of a three game set on Friday night at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park, falling 9-2.
Getting the start for the FerryHawks today was lefty Adalberto Mejia, who got in some trouble early on giving up 2 runs and 4 hits in the first inning. In the top of the third Mejia made an error trying to pick off a runner stealing, allowing a run, pushing Gastonia’s lead to 4-0. Connor Grey was on the bump for the Ghost Peppers — he looked strong early allowing only 1 hit in the first three innings.

Nate Scantlin made a great sliding catch in right center to end the top of the fourth while Richie Martin opened up the fifth inning with a deep home run for Gastonia to push the lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth the Hawks were able to generate some offense loading up the bases, leading to the first run of the game after Shayne Fontana worked a walk bringing home Nate Scantlin. In the bottom of the sixth Scantlin singled to score Brandon Martorano to make the score 5-2 Ghost Peppers.

Mejia was relieved to start the seventh as the Hawks turned to Shane Barringer out of the bullpen. Barringer gave up 4 runs out of the pen with 2 of the runs coming from a homerun off the bat of Narciso Crook that pushed the Ghost Peppers lead to 9-2.

The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow at 1:00 PM at SIUH Community Park in game 2 of the series.

York 8, Hagerstown 2

(May 16, 2025 – York, Pa.):  Jalen Miller’s grand slam reignited the York Revolution offense en route to a 12-2 pounding of the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars on Friday evening at WellSpan Park. The Revs improve to 12-7 with the win, tied for the best 19-game start in franchise history, while they increase their first place lead in the North Division to two games over both Long Island and Staten Island.

Coming off a frustrating three-game sweep in Southern Maryland in which York totaled just five runs, things got off to a slow start on Friday night.

York threatened early as Miller led off the first with an infield single and immediately stole second, but the Revs were unable to get him home. Osvaldo Tovalin’s second inning double also went stranded, while Hagerstown grabbed an early advantage.

Revs starter Tyler Palm worked around a two-out bases loaded threat for a scoreless first inning but was touched for a solo homer to left by Isaias Quiroz with two outs in the second for the game’s first run.

Miles Williams ripped a two-out RBI double to left center in the fourth as Hagerstown went up 2-0.

The beast that is the Revolution offense awoke in a huge way in the fourth. After a one-out throwing error, York seized its extra opportunity as Tovalin doubled off the Arch Nemesis and Jeffrey Wehler walked to load the bases. Michael Berglund got York on the board with a sac fly to center, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Ryan Higgins grinded his way on base with a huge two-out walk, setting the stage for Miller who cracked the Revs’ first grand slam of the season on a drive just right of the batters’ eye as the Revs surged ahead, 5-2.

The Revs went right back to work with a big fifth inning. Brandon Lewis tripled past a diving Jesus Lujano in center field, and Marty Costes drove an RBI double to right center. After an error put runners at the corners, Hagerstown starter Jorge Martinez (0-3) was lifted. Wehler greeted reliever Michael Saturria with a sac fly to deep center. Higgins kept the inning alive when he smoked a two-out single to left, and Miller’s pop up landed next to the pitchers’ mound for an RBI infield single as a bewildered bunch of Boxcar infielders stared at one another with York’s lead growing to 8-2.

Palm (1-0) struck out the first two batters of the sixth and was lifted after two hitters reached. Dallas Woolfolk took care of the final out, striking out Williams looking before handling a scoreless seventh.

The Revs built one last big inning in the seventh, scoring four more times to turn it into a laugher. Berglund walked and stole second to start the inning, and with one out, Miller drove an RBI triple to deep center for his career-high sixth RBI of the night. Justin Connell tacked on a sac fly to center, and Frankie Tostado crushed a solo homer to right center for his third of the year. Lewis doubled to left center and scored when Costes struck an RBI single to right as the Revs continued to tee off.

Parker Bugg (Revs debut) and Hunter Dula each fired perfect innings out of the bullpen to close it out.

Notes: York set season highs with 12 runs, 15 hits, nine extra-base hits, five doubles, two triples, and 30 total bases. It was their most lopsided victory of the season to date. York improves to 6-1 vs Hagerstown, having scored 11 or more in three of the past five head-to-head contests. The Revs registered three sac flies, tying a franchise single-game record set numerous times, most recently May 7, 2024 in a victory in Lancaster. York leads the league with 12 sac flies as a team. Miller’s six RBI eclipse the Revs’ previous season-best of three RBI in a game by one batter. Connell extended his on-base streak to all 16 games played to begin the year. In addition to his seventh inning homer, Tostado smacked his league-leading 13th double in just 19 games. Revs pitchers have allowed three earned runs or fewer in six straight games, holding a 2.79 ERA over that stretch. Palm allowed just two runs in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Over the last 10 games, Revs starting pitchers have worked a 3.29 ERA and have struck out 54 batters to just seven walks in 41.0 innings. The win is the 1,050th in the career of Revs manager Rick Forney.

Up Next: York seeks a series win on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. as lefty Danny Denz (0-0, 1.04) faces Hagerstown righty Daniel Corcino (1-2, 10.93). Saturday features “The Stigma Stops Here” presented by Bartz Brigade, WellSpan Wellness Weekend (Mental Health), and Post-Game Fireworks presented by Suicide Prevention of York.
