Lancaster 3, York 0
Lancaster’s arms were strong on Friday evening against the York Revolution.
The eyes and legs were keen, too. The bats – not so much.
Keylan Killgore and four Lancaster relievers combined on a five-hit shutout while the Stormers drew 11 walks and stole six bases in a 3-0 win over the Revs in a series opener at Penn Medicine Park.
The win, Lancaster’s seventh in 10 games, moved the Stormers to within five games of York for the North lead.
Killgore (1-2) kept York hitless until Brandon Lewis led off the fifth with a sinking liner to center that just eluded Danny Amaral’s diving effort. The lefty would allow another single that inning.
His defense kept York off the board in the sixth. After a one-out walk to Justin Connell and a two-out HBP against Marty Costes, Lewis grounded a single up the middle. Amaral charged the play and made a perfect throw home to catcher Alex Isola, who had plenty of time to tag out Connell to end the inning.
Scott Engler pitched a perfect seventh. York put together a two-out threat against Phil Diehl in the eighth, loading the bases. Jackson Rees took over the mound chores to face Lewis. The second called strike perturbed Lewis, who was tossed from the game by Vinny Marianni. Rees completed the strikeout against Mason Walker to end the frame.
Ryley Gilliam used a double play to cancel a one-out walk in the ninth to earn his fourth straight save.
Lancaster’s offense was meager but enough. Its first run came without the benefit of a base hit in the fourth inning off Wes Scott (1-2). The right-hander hit Ariel Sandoval with a pitch for the second time on the night. Sandoval stole second during a walk to Nick Lucky. Joseph Carpenter advanced the runners with a bunt, and Brandon Wagner got a fly ball deep enough to left center to plate the run.
Hunter Dula loaded the bases on two walks around a Carpenter single in the sixth. Yeison Coca drew his third free pass of the night to force home one run. Dallas Woolfolk walked Amaral to score another before York pitching retired the final nine Lancaster batters on the night.
Noah Bremer (0-1) will take the hill on Saturday against left-hander Danny Denz (0-0). Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into FloBaseball, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: The win was Lancaster’s first via shutout this season…It was also the first blanking of the Revs by the Stormers in nearly eight years…Killgore has allowed only two earned runs in his last 17 2/3 innings…The 11 walks was a season high for Lancaster…The only other Lancaster hit was a double by Mason Martin in the fifth…Stormers pitchers reached double digits in strikeouts for the 11th time on the season.
Staten Island 9, Long Island 1
The Staten Island FerryHawks open the Battle of the Belt Series on Long Island with a decisive 9-1 victory Friday evening.
The FerryHawks and Ducks met for their fourth of six consecutive matchups, split equally on Staten Island and Long Island. After the Ducks won the series at SIUH Community Park 2-1, both teams entered Friday’s game with a (13-11) record. The FerryHawks got the upperhand in game one back at the Ducks’ place following an excellent start from Christian Allegretti and a loud first inning at the plate.
Just two batters into the game, Staten Island had already taken a 1-0 lead. Nate Scantlin led off with a single on the first pitch that he saw, and then Aaron Takacs drove him in on a double to right field. With the bases loaded, Brandon Martorano singled home Aaron Takacs while the other base runners went station to station. In his Staten Island debut, Nicholas Decker worked a bases-loaded walk, making it a 3-0 ballgame. Tim Borden’s base knock allowed Mark Contreras and Martorano to score, while Maggi drove in Decker with his single. Before the Ducks even got the chance to hit, it was 6-0 FerryHawks.
Southpaw Christian Allegretti toed the slab to open the 25th game of the season. Coming off of his first win of 2025 in his last start against Gastonia, Allegretti was lights out against the rival Ducks. The third-year FerryHawk shoved for 6 innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out a season-high 7 opponents. The Brooklyn, New York native soared past Long Island en route to his second win of the year, simultaneously lowering his season ERA to 3.00.
In the visiting half of the 7th inning, Pablo Sandoval continued to pad his stats against the Long Island Ducks, mashing a three-run home run to the opposite field. Sandoval’s home run, which was his sixth of the season and fifth against the Ducks, cleared both walls in left field for a no-doubt blast. With the three runs brought in, the veteran third baseman upped his RBI count to 24 on the campaign.
James Meeker and Tanner Andrews came in to pitch the final three innings of the ballgame. Meeker registered 4 strikeouts in two innings of work and allowed just one hit. The base knock, off the bat of Ronaldo Flores, was just the third hit of the game. It was Flores who recorded all three hits; a pair of doubles against Allegretti and a single off of Meeker. The backstop was the only Ducks batter to find a solution to the otherwise lights-out FerryHawks pitching staff in game one. Andrews had a clean 9th inning, offering one walk but nothing more.
The FerryHawks had a statement victory at Fairfield Properties Ballpark to begin the Battle of the Belt series on Long Island. The Hawks are now (4-0) when visiting the Ducks this year, and they hope to continue this success with game two of the matchup on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35PM, and fans can watch live on FloSports.
High Point 9, Gastonia 3
GASTONIA, N.C. – Matt Solter pitched five shutout innings on Friday night to set the pace as the High Point Rockers took a 9-3 decision from the Gastonia Ghost Peppers in the opening game of a three-game series at CaroMont Health Park.
Solter (W, 3-1), who tossed a two hit shutout over nine innings to beat Lexington 17-0 on May 17, continued his scoreless streak over the first five innings on Friday while his teammates did the heavy lifting in the Rockers win.
At 18-7, the Rockers continue to own the best record in the Atlantic League and now own a four-game lead in the South Division over Lexington (14-11).
The Rockers opened the game by scoring four times in the first inning. Gastonia starter Connor Grey (L, 0-2) left after just seven pitches and allowing a pair of hits. Lead-off hitter D.J. Burt hit a ground rule double and Drew Mendoza lined a shot up the middle that connected with Grey’s throwing elbow and led to his departure. Nick Longhi then greeted reliever John Wilson with a two-run double before a pair of Gastonia errors led to the Rockers third run. Ian Yetsko singled home High Point’s fourth run of the frame.
The Rockers added a single run in the third when Tanner Myatt walked three straight batters and Max Viera trotted home on a wild pitch. High Point grew the lead to 6-0 in the fifth on Yetsko’s solo homer.
With five shutout innings coupled with his nine inning shutout in his last outing, Solter stretched his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 14, one shy of the club record. But Gastonia spoiled that mark in the sixth when Dalton Guthrie hit a three-run homer to cut the Rockers lead in half to 6-3.
Solter went six innings, walked three and struck out six while yielding two runs and five hits.
Justin Lewis came on in the seventh inning and put the Peppers down in order. Tommy Doyle tossed shutout frames in the eighth and ninth innings to close out the win.
The Rockers tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth off Nick Horvath to stretch the lead to 9-3. Aidan Brewer and D.J. Burt started the inning with singles. Nick Longhi drove home Brewer with a ground rule double and Evan Edwards doubled to plate two more runs.
Burt, Mendoza, Longhi and Yetsko each finished the night with a pair of hits. Longhi and Edwards each collected three RBI while Yetsko drove in a pair of runs. Edwards has now collected 18 RBI over his last eight games and is riding an 11-game hitting streak.
High Point and Gastonia meet again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at CaroMont Health Park in game two of the three-game series.
