York 13, Hagerstown 4
(August 17, 2024 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution offense put on a show on Saturday night in a 13-4 win over the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars, their 11th consecutive win against Hagerstown, in front of 4,487 fans at WellSpan Park.
The first set of offensive fireworks came right out of the gates as York’s first four batters of the game reached against Hagerstown starter Yeudy Garcia. That burst was capped off by an opposite field grand slam home run from David Washington as the Revs held an immediate 4-0 lead.
Hagerstown slowly crept back into the game against Revs starter Ethan Lindow.
Ozzie Abreu singled home the Boxcars’ first run in the top of the second inning. Two innings later, the Boxcars loaded the bases and Cito Culver drove a ball to deep left center field. Rudy Martin Jr saved multiple runs with a sliding grab, but one did score on the sacrifice fly, making it 4-2.
Joe Campagna brought Hagerstown within a run in the fifth, depositing an RBI single into shallow right field to slash York’s lead to 4-3. Campagna ran the Boxcars out of the inning one batter later, however, when Abreu skied a high fly to deep left that was caught by Jacob Rhinesmith against the Nemesis. Campagna ended up at third base during the ball’s flight and was easily doubled off to end the inning with York still on top.
Hagerstown had multiple hits in all five innings pitched by Lindow (11-4), but only managed three runs (two earned) as Lindow benefited from three double plays turned by the Revs defense.
Offensively after the grand slam, York managed just one additional baserunner through four innings against Garcia. Alfredo Reyes helped snap that skid in the bottom of the fifth inning, ripping a single to left field over the leap of shortstop Osmy Gregorio. Martin Jr followed with a single of his own before Garcia got himself on the verge of escaping with a pair of consecutive strikeouts to the next two batters.
Despite having veteran lefty Jose Lopez warming, Hagerstown stayed with Garcia who walked Washington before Jacob Rhinesmith knocked a two-run single down the third base line, extending York’s lead to 6-3 and chasing Garcia (2-5) from the game.
Lopez’ first batter faced was Alerick Soularie who blasted a three-run home run over the Nemesis to cap off a five spot for York, cushioning their lead to 9-3.
The Boxcars scratched across a run in the sixth inning on a Welington Dotel single. Rhinesmith stifled a further rally thanks to a strong deke and outfield assist on a ball off of the Nemesis, throwing out Culver at second trying to stretch his single into a double.
Alex Valverde struck out the side in the seventh inning and Nelvin Correa pitched a scoreless eighth out of the Revs bullpen.
Washington continued his big night with two outs in the eighth inning, smacking a two-run double to the left-center field gap. Rhinesmith followed with a double of his own off the top of the Nemesis to score Washington. Soularie kept the trend going, driving York’s third straight double to cap off a four-run inning and a 13-run offensive outburst.
Denny Bentley handled the ninth inning, getting a game-ending double play from Dariel Gomez to lock down a 13-4 York win.
York will go for the sweep on Sunday when Aaron Fletcher takes the mound against Parker Markel at 2 p.m. Promotions include Sunday Funday by Weis Markets, Crab Feast catered by Captain Bob’s Crabs in the Home Run Patio, 800-Minute Reading Club, Mason’s Superhero Fun Run, and Superhero Appearances presented by York County Veterans Outreach. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
Notes: Lindow earned his ninth consecutive winning decision, tying a franchise record set by Mitch Atkins in 2019. The win is his league-leading 11th overall. Washington’s six RBI tie a York single-game high for the season, alongside Ciaran Devenney who drove in six against Lancaster on 6/23. Washington’s slam was the 98th home run of his Atlantic League career, and he is now two shy of becoming the 13th player in league history to hit 100 career homers. Washington joined Donovan Casey as the second Rev to hit two grand slams this season; it is just the second time in franchise history that York has had two players hit multiple slams, with Jose Herrera and Steve Haake doing so in 2010. Martin Jr stole three bases on the night, bringing his season total to 68, good for eighth in a single season in Atlantic League history. York turned a season high four double plays in the game. The Revs improve to 66-33 overall, 33 games above .500 for the first time. Their 23-13 second half record brings them within half a game of first place. York improves to 14-3 against Hagerstown, two wins shy of matching their all-time record for victories against an opponent in a season series.
Staten Island 12, Lancaster 2
Kyle Kasser became an instant folk hero.
The Lancaster infielder moved to the mound and, with a series of sub-50 MPH pitches, got Luis Castro to ground into a force out, closing the top of the ninth. He got a huge round of applause.
Which tells you what kind of game it was Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Staten Island FerryHawks slugged a trio of three-run homers and drew 11 walks to rout the host Lancaster Stormers, 12-2, in the middle game of a three-game series.
With the loss, Lancaster’s lead over York was trimmed to one-half game in the second half North race. Long island trails by only two.
Damon Dues opened the night with a homer for Lancaster, but the rest of the night belonged to Staten Island. The barrage did not begin until the fourth when the FerryHawks strung together four straight hits off Noah Bremer (8-6). Nate Scantlin greeted Bremer, who faced the minimum of nine batters in the first three innings, with a double to left center. Luis Castro grounded an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1. Pablo Sandoval singled to left before Ben Norman hit the first of the home runs, a drive over the right field tents for a 4-1 edge.
The rest of the damage was done to the Stormers bullpen. Kolbi Johnson, who missed the cycle by one base, took Steffon Moore to right center in the sixth for a 7-1 lead. Alejandro De Aza belted a three-run homer off Adam Wibert in the seventh.
Staten Island’s final two runs crossed against Kyle Johnson in the ninth. Following Johnson’s fifth walk of the inning and the 11th walk surrendered by the staff for the night, Kasser took over and gave the fans some happiness before the fireworks that ended the night.
Kasser, along with his pitching exploits, had two hits in the game as did Joseph Carpenter, who singled in Lancaster’s other run.
Christian Allegretti (6-1), the third of four Staten Island pitchers, threw two scoreless innings and was awarded the win.
The Stormers will wrap up the series against Staten Island on Sunday afternoon at 5:00. Oscar De La Cruz (3-2) will make the start against right-hander Noe Torbilio (1-2). Fans may tune into FloBaseball at 4:55.
NOTES: Mason Martin lost his hitting streak at 16 games…Dues’ homer was his first since July 10 when he hit two, also against the FerryHawks…All six of his homers have been in Lancaster…The appearance was Kasser’s second of the year…He also threw a scoreless inning at York…The loss was Lancaster’s worst since a 14-3 defeat at High Point, July 7…Closer Stephen Nogosek was placed on the seven-day injured list prior to the game…His return this season is not expected.

High Point 6, Charleston 3
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The High Point Rockers snapped a six-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Charleston Dirty Birds on Saturday night at GoMart Ballpark.
The win brought the Rockers (20-16) a game closer to first place in the South Division. Charleston (24-13) continues to lead but by just 3.5 games. Gastonia (21-15) remains a game in front of High Point.
Rain delayed the start of the game and when a starting time was announced, there was insufficient time for each club’s starting pitcher to get ready. So both the Rockers and Dirty Birds began the game with “openers” on the mound, reliever Kyle Halbohn for High Point and reliever Joan Matinez for Charleston. Each of them went two innings.
Ben Aklinski put the Rockers ahead 1-0 in the first inning with a solo homer off Martinez, , his 21st of the season.
Charleston tied the game in the bottom of the first as Halbohn allowed three singles to open the game, loading the bases. Rusber Estrada’s fly ball turned into a sacrifice fly for the Dirty Birds, tying the game.
The Rockers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Connor Owings singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch. D.J. Burt then hit a two-run homer off the light stanchion in left to move the Rockers in front.
Phillip Ervin tied the game with a two-run homer to right off Jeremy Rhoades (W, 3-3) in the bottom of the fifth.
High Point scored three times in the seventh off Adrian Almeida (L, 6-3) when Trey Martin walked, moved to second on a ground out by Brian Parreira and scored on Martin Figueroa’s single to left. Ryan Grotjohn followed with a single, moving Figueroa to second. Bryan Quillens replaced Adrian Almeida on the mound for Charleston and walked Aklinski to load the bases. Quincy Nieporte then rolled a single up the middle, scoring Figueroa and Grotjohn and giving the Rockers a 6-3 lead.
Rhoades went six innings and scattered seven hits while walking two and striking out nine.
Garrett Schilling came on to earn the save in the ninth. After allowing a single and a walk, Schilling struck out Ervin before Keon Barnum sent a one-hopper back to the mound and Schilling initiated a 1-6-3 game-ending double play.
The fourth and final game of the series is slated for Sunday at 4:05 p.m. at GoMart Park. The Rockers then return home to face Gastonia on Tuesday, August 20 at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point.
NOTES: Rain delayed the start of the game for 45 minutes. Each team selected a reliever to start the game before bringing in the scheduled starter in the third inning. Charleston’s Adrian Almeida entered the game in the top of the third and High Point’s Jeremy Rhoades came on in the bottom of the third… Ryan Grotjohn singled in the top of the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest by a Rocker this season.
