York Revolution 2, Hagerstown Flying Boxcars 1

(July 19, 2025 – Hagerstown, Md.):  Ryan Higgins drove in both runs including a tiebreaking homer in the eighth as the York Revolution edged the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars, 2-1 on Saturday night at Meritus Park.

The game was scoreless into the fifth inning and the Revs had been held hitless by Hagerstown starter Mike Kickham. That ended when Bubba Alleyne drew a two-out walk and stole second base for his third steal of the game, setting up Higgins to open the scoring with an RBI double down the right field line for the Revs’ first hit of the night.

York starter Foster Pace was outstanding and retired eight straight, carrying the 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Pace was lifted when Gary Mattis blooped a single to left leading off the home seventh on Pace’s 100th pitch. It was just the fifth hit allowed by Pace, four of which came on soft contact.

Righty Alex Valverde, signed earlier in the day, returned to the Revs having been a key member of the 2024 championship team’s bullpen and quickly recorded the first two outs, but Bryce Cannon tied the game with a two-out double to right center, squaring the score at 1-1. Valverde hit the next two batters to load the bases but retired Osvaldo Abreu on a fielder’s choice grounder to third, escaping the jam to keep the game tied.

Still with just one hit on the night, the Revs quickly regained the lead as Higgins launched an opposite field solo homer to right with one out in the eighth, ending Kickham’s streak of eight straight retired as the Revs took a 2-1 lead on just their second hit of the game, both go-ahead extra-base hits by Higgins.

Valverde (1-0) protected that lead with a perfect eighth, and Cam Robinson notched his league-leading 14th save with a scoreless ninth. Robinson quickly recorded a pair of groundouts before issuing two walks, but retired Roidel Martinez on a ground ball to second base to end it.

The Revs tied a club record for fewest hits in a victory with three, as the only hit other than Higgins’ two clutch knocks came on Marty Costes’ one-out double in the ninth.

Kickham (4-6) suffered the tough luck loss. The veteran lefty who authored a nine-inning no-hitter just over one month prior allowed only two runs on two hits in eight innings.

The Revs tie a season-high at 18 games over .500, improving to 46-28 on the season while moving into a tie for first place in the second half at 7-4.

Notes: York’s three hits match a season-low (June 22 at Staten Island) while tying a club record for fewest hits in a victory for the sixth time and first since 2018. It is just the fourth time they’ve recorded three hits in a nine-inning victory and first since 2016. York improves to 18-2 against Hagerstown on the season, 11-0 at Meritus Park with one final road meeting on Sunday evening. Among the hitless casualties, Frankie Tostado lost a 13-game hitting streak, Shayne Fontana had his seven-gamer snapped, Alleyne saw a six-gamer end, and Jalen Miller had his five game multi-hit streak slashed. The Revs halt a streak of four consecutive series in which the team that won the first game lost the next two, as they have notched a series win and will go for a sweep on Sunday. The win is Rick Forney’s 197th as Revs manager as he is three victories shy of becoming the second fastest in league history to 200 wins.

Up Next: York goes for the sweep on Sunday at 5 p.m. as RHP Chris Vallimont (3-1, 5.82) faces righty Jack Weisenburger (1-3, 4.91). Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 4:40 p.m.

High Point Rockers 9, Lancaster Stormers 3

LANCASTER, Pa. – Mike Devine won his first game in professional baseball since 2022, leading the High Point Rockers to a 9-3 over the Lancaster Stormers on Saturday night at Penn Medicine Park. Devine (W, 1-0) went six innings, allowing just five hits and a pair of walks while striking out two.

For Devine, 35, it marked his first victory on the mound since pitching for Veracruz in the Mexican League in 2022. The former VMI pitcher had last pitched in the Atlantic League with Southern Maryland in 2021. A freight broker in Tampa by day, Devine worked his way back to professional earlier this month and was making his second start as a Rocker on Saturday.

The Rockers improved to 6-5 in the second half and continue to hold the Atlantic League’s top overall record at 47-27. The Rockers are a game behind Lexington in the South Division second half standings.

The Rockers never trailed after loading the bases with nobody out in the top of the first. Lancaster starter Noah Bremer (L, 4-2) then struck out Alex Dickerson and Ben Aklinski before walking Braxton Davidson to force in a run. D.J. Burt then singled to center to score Max Viera but the Stormers were able to throw Drew Mendoza out at the plate to limit the Rockers to a 2-0 lead.

Devine kept the Stormers hitless until Nick Ward hit a solo homer in the third to cut High Point’s lead to 2-1.

After Isaiah Mirabal singled to start the fifth inning, Aidan Brewer hit a two-run homer to left-center to put the Rockers up 4-1. Luis Gonzalez followed with a double into the right field corner and then scored on consecutive wild pitches by Bremer. Viera then drew a walk before Mendoza delivered a 404-foot homer to right to put High Point ahead 7-1.

Lancaster answered with two runs on three hits off Devine in the bottom of the fifth. Ward delivered a two-run double after Danny Amaral and Scott Kelly had singled.

Stevie Branche came out of the bullpen in the seventh followed by Zach Vennaro in the eighth as each kept the Stormers without another run.

The Rockers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Gonzalez led off the inning with a solo homer, his 15th of the year, to put High Point ahead 8-3. After Mendoza tripled, Dickerson doubled to right for a 9-3 Rockers advantage.

Jameson McGrane pitched the ninth and was aided by a pair of acrobatic leaping catches in the outfield by Gonzalez and Viera to keep Lancaster off the scoreboard.

With the series knotted at 1-1, the rubber match is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Penn Medicine Park. Rockers fans can catch the action on FLOBASEBALL.TV and on the MixLR app. High Point returns home to start a six-game home stand beginning on Tuesday at 6:35 against the Charleston Dirty Birds.

NOTES: The Rockers placed C Nolan Watson on the 7-day injured list after he suffered a leg injury while rounding first base on a base hit on Friday . . . High Point signed C Chris Brady who had been with the club during spring training.

Lexington Legends 10, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4

Lexington, KY – After a slugfest victory the night before, the Legends looked to take the series over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Over 4,100 fans from across Kentucky, from Somerset to Paris, were at Legends Field in what turned out to be a beautiful Saturday night in the Bluegrass. Lexington gave Dustin Beggs the start, while the Blue Crabs gave it to Jalen Miller.

The first inning breezed by as both teams went three up three down, and Beggs struck out two in the top of the second to sit the Blue Crabs down quietly. Lexington got the scoring started in the bottom of the second as Andy Atwood clubbed a double to center field, and two errant throws on the play would not only bring Brian Fuentes in to score, but Atwood all the way around the bases to score himself. Beggs tallied two more strikeouts in the third as the Blue Crabs struggled to find anything. Beggs continued to hold the Blue Crabs in the fourth as he found another strikeout. The Legends began to pull away in the fourth inning as Atwood laid down an RBI single to bring in Brady Whalen before stealing second and get in scoring position himself. Atwood was then driven home by Ryan McCarthy, who found the gap in left for an RBI double to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

The Blue Crabs didn’t log their first hit of the game until the fifth when Jamari Baylor found open ground in the outfield. This was followed by a double from Giovanni Digiacomo that put runners on the corners. Baylor would then come home on a misplayed ball to bring in the first run before Sam Dexter hit into a fielder’s choice to plate the second, making it a 4-2 ballgame. Lexington immediately tagged on back on in the bottom of the fifth as Paul Winland’s lead-off double put him in prime position to be driven home by Xane Washington’s RBI single. Washington was then driven in himself on a single by Curtis Terry. Lexington refused to let off the gas as Brady Whalen left the yard immediately after that to drive in 2 and make it an 8-2 ballgame. The Legends’ defense was able to turn a double play in the sixth, but Brett Barrerra would hit one over left to plate two runs before Christian Edward could find the last out.

Lexington’s defense continued to hold strong in the seventh as they turned a double play. Julio Dilone came into the game to provide relief in the eighth. He was able to tally two strikeouts as the Blue Crabs continued to be held. Ryan McCarthy bounced a ground rule double over the fence in center field before stealing third and driving home by a sac fly from Jerry Huntzinger. Paul Winland followed this up by sending a ball soaring over the left field fence to tag on one more safety run with his second homer of the season. Jimmy Loper came into the game and successfully shut down the Blue Crabs to secure the win.

The Legends win 8-4 as they take the series over the Blue Crabs and extend their winning streak to five straight games, and now leading the South Division by 1.5 games. Behind a season-high effort of six strikeouts, Dustin Beggs earns the win to improve to 3-0, and the loss is given to Jalen Miller as his record goes to 5-3 on the season. The series will wrap up tomorrow afternoon as the Legends look for a second series sweep in a row. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM for Funday Sunday, presented by the YMCA of Central Kentucky. It will be a great day for members of the Great Clips Kids Club to redeem their membership for their complimentary ticket for what is sure to be a great afternoon of baseball.

The Dirty Birds took the lead back with a three-run third, highlighted by RBI doubles from Benjamin Blackwell and James Nelson and an RBI single by Zach Daniels.

The Ducks closed to within 4-2 in the fifth on another RBI double by Viola, this time down the right field line. However, an RBI single to shallow left by Chad Sedio in the seventh put Charleston’s lead back to three. Solo homers in the eighth and ninth by Joseph Rosa and Nelson, respectively, rounded out the scoring at 7-2.

De Avila (3-0) earned the win, tossing six innings of two-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out five. Melville (3-1) took the loss, conceding four runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings with seven strikeouts.
