Staten Island FerryHawks 5, Lancaster Stormers 4

The Staten Island FerryHawks took the field on Saturday night as the Irish Goodbyes, in honor of Irish Heritage Night, at SIUH Community Park. Instead of gold at the end of the rainbow, it was a win at the end of the game for Staten Island, as they defeated the Lancaster Stormers 5-4.

The FerryHawks dropped the series opener 8-7 in extra innings Friday night, but got their revenge in the middle game of the series. Righty starter Wes Scott made his fourth appearance as a FerryHawk and lasted four and one-third innings. Throughout his outing, Scott struck out 5 and allowed just as many hits while surrendering four runs- all of which were earned.

Every inning that the Stormers plated a run, Staten Island answered immediately. A solo home run from Mason Martin in the first inning put Lancaster up initially. In the home half of the first, Eddy Diaz hit a leadoff triple and later came around to score on a Kolby Johnson sac-fly.

Fast forward to inning number three, Nick Lucky picked up an RBI single while Andrew Semo delivered a sacrifice fly of his own. The score was 3-1 going into the last of the frame. In his first at bat as a FerryHawk, Vaun Brown crushed a no-doubt solo home run to left field. That cut the Irish Goodbyes’ deficit down to one, setting the table for Eddy Diaz once again. Diaz singled, stole a base, advanced to third during Johnson’s at bat, and scored on a Mark Contreras fly out. That evened the game up once more.

Scott would give up one more run while on the mound for the home team, and once more it was Nick Lucky who came through with a single that drove in the run. The scoring would stop in the bottom of the 5th after Matt Scheffler knocked in Eddy Diaz and Mark Contreras with a 2 RBI single through the right side of the infield. The Goodbyes had their first lead of the game and there was no looking back from that point on.

The bullpen for manager Mark Minicozzi was electric against the Stormers. Reinier Parra came through and earned his second win of the season after 1.2 innings of two-hit, no run baseball. Parra escaped a middle-inning, bases-loaded jam by striking out Mason Martin to retire the side. Parra then passed the baton to Clay Helvey, who recorded his first multi-inning relief appearance of the year. Helvey recorded 6 outs- 3 via the punchout, and did not allow a hit. Finally, Durbin Feltman pitched his way to his first save of the 2025 campaign.

Eddy Diaz went 3-4 at the plate while scoring three runs and being just a home run shy of the cycle. Pablo Sandoval also had a three hit night, and Vaun Brown impressed with a long home run in his first at bat representing Hawk City. It was a tremendous all-around effort that helped even up the series at 1-1 this late weekend in July.

The rubbermatch is set for 1:30PM at SIUH Community Park on Sunday, July 27th. All FerryHawks players will be signing pre-game autographs at 12:30PM. Can’t make the game? Don’t miss a pitch of the action. Watch live on FloSports with an active subscription.

Lexington Legends 9, Charleston Dirty Birds 5

Charleston, WV- The Legends take the second game of their series in Charleston, 9-4. The Legends would get out to an early lead in the first inning when Xane Washington laid down a two-run double. Both teams’ pitching would take over, as neither team was able to plate anything until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Zach Daniels laid down an RBI single that tied the game up. Charleston then pulled ahead in the seventh when Keon Barnum laid down an RBI single of his own to bring in two more runs. However, Lexington would rally with their backs against the wall in the eighth, starting with a lead-off solo shot from Brady Whalen that was followed by back-to-back doubles to tie it up. Dylan Rock would then play the hero as he hit a three-run moonshot to give the Legends a 7-4 lead. The Legends would continue to pile on in the eighth when Ryan McCarthy laid down an RBI double that scored Lexington’s final two runs of the game.
The Legends looked to get back on track after a devastating loss to the Charleston Dirty Birds the night before. Lexington’s loss last night dropped them to second place, but they only trail the first-place High Point Rockers by one game. Dustin Beggs got the start for the Legends, whose last start came on June 19th in Lexington’s 10-4 victory over Southern Maryland, where he only allowed two runs to score in his five innings pitched. Charleston handed it to David Lebron to get it started for the. His last start came against Long Island on July 20th, where he allowed two runs to score in his six innings pitched.
Lexington jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, starting with a long double from Xane Washington that brought in Dylan Rock and Brady Whalen. James Nelson would lay down a lead-off double for Charleston, but the Legends infield was able to turn a 6-4-3 double play to curb them in the first. The Dirty Birds came up empty-handed again in the bottom of the second despite a lead-off single from Joseph Rosa. Brady Whalen found Lexington’s second hit of the game with a two-out double that bounced off first base, but Lebron was able to force the putout before he could come home. The Legends’ offense continued to perform excellently in the bottom of the third as Brady Whalen made a jumping throw to first to deny Charleston their third lead-off hit before he caught Demetrius Moorer in a pickle for the second out of the inning.
The Legends were able to draw two walks to put runners aboard in the top of the fourth, but they were again unable to bring them in. Zach Daniels would lay down a single in the bottom of the fourth, but they would remain scoreless. Beggs continued to dominate in the fifth, tallying two strikeouts before Travis Dimmerette was called out on interference. However, Charleston would lay down back-to-back singles to start the sixth inning. This would take Dustin Beggs out of the game and put Jimmy Loper on the mound. Loper was able to secure the first two outs, but Zach Daniels would lay down an RBI double to tie that game up at 2-2 going into the final three frames.
Charleston would then find their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Keon Barnum laid down an RBI single that scored two runs to put the Dirty Birds up 4-2 late in the game. However, Brady Whalen immediately responded by leaving the yard with a lead-off solo shot in the top of the eighth to make it a one-run game. This was then followed by back-to-back doubles from Xane Washington and Brian Fuentes that tied the game up at 4 apiece. Dylan Rock kept the rally going as he sent a ball flying out of GoMart Park to plate three more runs and put Lexington up 7-4 going into the homestretch. The Legends would then add on two more cushion runs in the top of the ninth when Ryan McCarthy found the grass in left to bring in Terry and Washington, giving Lexington a 9-4 lead. Charleston would fine one meager run in the bottom of the ninth when Barnum laid down an RBI single.
The Legends win the game 9-5, tying up the series. This win keeps Lexington in second place as they sit a half game back from first-place High Point. The win is given to Carson Lambert, who earns his first win of the season. The loss is attributed to Frank Moscatiello, whose record now stands at 0-2 on the year. The Legends and the Dirty Birds face off again at GoMart Park on July 27th for the rubber match, with first pitch slated for 3:05 pm EST.

High Point Rockers 6,  Gastonia Ghost Peppers 4

HIGH POINT, N.C-  The High Point Rockers won their fifth straight game, beating the Gastonia Ghost Peppers 6-4 on Saturday night at Truist Point in front of a crowd of 2,004.

The win was significant for a number of reasons. The Rockers improved to 52-28 on the season and set a club mark for the best record after 80 games. The 2023 Rockers had been 51-29 at the same point in the season. High Point continues to hold the Atlantic League’s top overall record and, at 11-6 in the second half, have moved into first place in the South Division.

In addition, centerfielder Ben Aklinski stole second base in the eighth inning, his 20th stolen base of the year. Coupled with his 21 homers, Aklinski has achieved 20-20 status for the third consecutive year, the first time that has ever happened in the Atlantic League.

The Rockers loaded the bases twice during the first inning and were able to score two runs. Luis Gonzalez scored on a sacrifice fly from Max Viera, and D.J. Burt slammed an RBI single to lift the Rockers with a 2-0 lead.

The Ghostpeppers retaliated in the third inning, with a two-run homer from Nate Scantlin off starter Mike Devine to tie the game at 2-2.

In the fourth inning, the Ghost Peppers took a 3-2 lead as Ethan Skender singled home Dalton Guthrie. The lead was short-lived as Aidan Brewer launched his ninth homer of the season in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 3-3.

In the fifth, Eric De La Rosa doubled, was sacrificed to third and scored on a single by Guthrie to put Gastonia ahead 4-3.

The Rockers regained the lead just in the sixth as Gastonia reliever Kent Hasler walked the first three batters of the inning. Aklinski singled home the tying run before Drew Mendoza put the Rockers ahead 5-4 with a sac fly to center.

Mendoza was at it again in the eighth, doubling home Aklinski who had walked and stole second to move into scoring position.

Guthrie finished the night with four hits while catcher Henderson Perez added three. No Rocker had more than one hit as Gastonia out hit the Rockers 11-8.

The Rockers will look for the series sweep on Sunday at 4:05 pm. Sunday is a very special day for the Rockers, as it is Hype’s birthday! Fans can expect to see Hype’s mascot friends gather together at Truist Point to celebrate his big day. Fans can catch all the action on FLOBASEBALL.TV and on the MixLR app.

NOTES: The Rockers have won five straight and 10 of their last 13 contests . . . Brewer’s homer gave the Rockers at least one home run in 11 straight games . . . Ben Alkinski became the first player in the Atlantic League history to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in three consecutive seasons. He is just the second ALPB player this year to join the 20-20 Club along with Charleston’s James Nelson.
