Staten Island 3, York 0
May 25, 2024 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution were not able to extend their first-place lead as the Staten Island FerryHawks took advantage of a rain-shortened six-inning affair, winning 3-0 at WellSpan Park in front of 4,957 fans on Saturday night.
Starters Will Stewart and Christian Capuano traded zeroes over the first three innings. Stewart worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second while Capuano stranded five across his first three frames.
Stewart retired the first two in the top half of the fourth inning, but Staten Island proceeded to rattle off four straight two-out hits. Among those hits was a two-run homer by Ben Norman to left center field which broke the scoreless tie and put the FerryHawks up 2-0.
Looking to rally, the Revs loaded the bases with one out including a leadoff double just inside the first base bag by Colton Welker. Capuano struck out Matt McDermott before getting Donovan Casey to ground out to first base to end the threat.
Staten Island got an unearned insurance run after chasing Stewart in the sixth. Stewart gave up a double to Norman and hit Korry Howell before being lifted for Michael Horrell. After a passed ball moved runners up to second and third, Drew Maggi hit a ball to the warning track in left center field for a sacrifice fly, moving the Hawks lead to 3-0.
Before the Revs could come to bat in the bottom half of the inning, the tarp was put on the field with persistent lightning in the area and rain approaching. After a lengthy delay, the game was called.
With the two teams now even in first place at 16-11, York will send lefty Ethan Lindow to the mound on Sunday for a 2 PM start, opposed by Mike Shawaryn for Staten Island. It is a Sunday Funday by Weis Markets and Countdown to Kindergarten presented by L&E Playhouse featuring a Bluey Appearance. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
Notes: The 16-11 record is still the best 27-game start in Revs history. The shutout loss is the first by the Revs since Opening Night. David Washington lost a 19-game hitting streak in the shortened contest. McDermott extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his league-leading 38th hit and stole his league-leading 15th bag; he now has a league-best 24-game on-base streak including all 23 games he’s played with York and has hit safely in 21 of those 23 contests. York signed infielder Brandt Broussard before the game; Broussard made his debut playing third base on Saturday night and went 0-for-1 with a walk while handling three ground balls including starting a pair of double plays. A former LSU Tiger, Broussard is in his second Atlantic League season after serving as Lexington’s second baseman last season.
Charleston 6, High Point 5 (10 innings)
(Charleston, WV – May 25, 2024) – The Dirty Birds defeated the High Point Rockers Saturday night in extra innings. The Birds had a 5-1 lead entering the ninth inning, but the Rockers tied the game after Cristofer Ogando gave up three walks and 1 hit.
Left-handed reliever Edison Suriel pitched the top of the 10th inning for the Dirty Birds. The Rockers were poised to score with runners on the corners and just one out. High Point’s DJ Burt lined out to right fielder Tillman Pugh, who threw out Jake Washer trying to score on the line out. That inning ending double play was all the momentum the Dirty Birds needed.
In the bottom of the tenth, veteran catcher Rusber Estrada hit the winning double to score Jared Carr from second base. The much needed win ties up the series with two games left to play. Tomorrow, the Rockers and Dirty Birds will face off in a doubleheader starting at 4:05pm at GoMart Ballpark.
Gastonia 6, Southern Maryland 5
Gastonia defeated Southern Maryland 6-5 on Saturday night, taking advantage of four Blue Crab errors to win its fifth straight game.
Two of the four Southern Maryland miscues took place in the opening frame.
Jack Reinheimer and Josh Stowers led things off against right-hander Alex Merithew by hitting grounders to third base. Ian Yetsko’s throw was too low on the Reinheimer grounder and far above Gabe Wurtz’s leaping attempt after Stowers rolled one over to the hot corner.
After the two consecutive throwing errors on Yetsko, Gastonia cashed in with a Kevin Watson Jr RBI single and a Dean Miller bases-loaded walk.
The Club entered the bottom of the first already trailing 3-0 after starter LJay Newsome allowed three runs on three hits, so the two errors helped make it a 3-2 deficit for the home team.
Gastonia tied the game when Patrick Mazeika brought in Watson Jr with a groundout in the third inning, and it remained 3-3 heading into the fifth.
With two on and two out, Eric De La Rosa crushed a line drive into the left-center field gap, plating Watson Jr and Mazeika to give Gastonia its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Club held a 5-4 lead in the eighth, which is where the other two Southern Maryland errors came into play.
De La Rosa hit a slow grounder to third, which Yetsko booted while moving to his left. This was the third baseman’s third error of the contest.
Reliever Jason Creasy tried picking off De La Rosa at first, and in doing so threw the ball down the right-field line for error No. 4.
After De La Rosa went first-to-third on the errant throw, Dean Miller drove him in with an opposite-field single.
That insurance run proved to be significant, as Gastonia’s closer Phoenix Sanders allowed one run in the ninth before striking out Anthony Brocato to record his fifth save of the season.
Gastonia improved to 19-8 after winning its fifth straight game and being the victors in 11 of its past 12 contests.
The Club will look to win its sixth straight series on Sunday night against the Blue Crabs, with first pitch at 7 p.m.
Long Island 4, Lancaster 1
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 25, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Stormers 4-1 in waddle-off fashion on Saturday night in the third game of a four-game series and nightcap of a day/night doubleheader at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
The Stormers plated the game’s first run in the second inning on a two-out RBI single to right field by Gaige Howard. It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth when the Ducks rallied for the win. After back-to-back one-out singles by Ryan McBroom and Chance Sisco, Aaron Antonini tied the game at one with a two-out RBI single through the right side. Ivan Castillo then hit the next pitch over the left-center field fence for a walk-off three-run home run.
Ducks starter Mike Montgomery did not factor into the decision but tossed seven innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out five. Sam Delaplane (3-1) picked up the win after retiring the side in order in the ninth, striking out one. Stormers starter Jack Labosky (1-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on 10 hits in eight and two-thirds innings while striking out eight.
Castillo led the Ducks offense with two hits, three RBIs and a run. McBroom and Sisco each added two hits and a run.
The Ducks and Stormers wrap up their four-game set on Sunday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 12:35 (12:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s a Sunday Family Funday, presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Prior to the game, fans are invited to have a catch on the field from 12:40 to 1:00. Following the game, fans are welcome back down to the field to take part in Kids Run the Bases. Right-hander Stephen Woods Jr. (1-2, 7.59) gets the ball for the Ducks against Stormers righty Nile Ball (3-1, 3.49).
Lancaster 7, Long Island 2
Like most of his Lancaster bullpen mates, Max Green has had a tough start to the season.
Until, that is, they have to make a start.
Green threw the longest appearance of his professional career on Saturday afternoon, a five-inning spot start, leading the Stormers to a 7-2 victory over the Long Island Ducks in the opener of a split doubleheader at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. The game was scheduled for seven innings.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Stormers, who had not won since a 13-2 decision over York one week ago.
Green (1-3) struck out nine and walked none while limiting Long Island to three singles in the five-inning stint. Ryan McBroom reached the lefty for a two-out single to left in the bottom of the first inning. Green retired the next 11 Ducks, including one stretch where he struck out six in a row.
Lancaster’s bats, as well as Long Island’s defense, provided more than ample support for Green’s performance. The Stormers picked up an unearned run in the first as Trace Loehr walked and stole second. Chris Proctor singled to the hole at shortstop, and Loehr was able to race home and score when Manuel Geraldo’s throw skipped by Chance Sisco for the first of three Long Island errors.
The third inning brought six more runs off Charlie Neuweiler (0-2). With one out, Proctor singled to right. A bad pickoff attempt sent Proctor to third. Following a walk to Joseph Carpenter, Shawon Dunston, Jr. lined a single to left for a 2-0 lead. Chad Sedio was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Justin Farmer walked to force home a run.
Gaige Howard delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon, a three-run triple to left center. He would score Lancaster’s final run on a Nick Lucky single into right.
Tyler Dearden spoiled the shutout bid with one out in the bottom of the seventh, reaching reliever Carter Raffield with a pinch hit home run to center field.
The second game of the doubleheader is scheduled for 6:35. Lancaster will send Jack Labosky (1-0) to the hill against lefty Mike Montgomery (0-1). Fans may view the game on FloBaseball, starting at 6:30.
NOTES: Proctor went 3-for-3, his fifth game with three or more hits…He finished the afternoon at .359…Howard’s triple was his first extra base hit of May…The Stormers still have not tossed a shutout on the season…Three pitchers out of Lancaster’s bullpen (Bremer, Sylk and Green) have combined to throw 16 shutout innings in their first starts.
