High Point 6-3, Charleston 0-7
(Charleston, WV – May 26, 2024) – The Dirty Birds split a double header against High Point Sunday night to finish the week 4-3. The two seven-inning games took seven hours to complete because of a two and half hour rain delay during game one.
In game one, the Dirty Birds did not have a hit until the sixth inning when Delino DeShields Jr. singled to left field. The Rockers shut out Charleston in the seven-inning game while scoring six runs. The Birds have now been shut out twice this season.
In the second game, the Dirty Birds scored five runs in the third inning off three hits and two errors. DeShields Jr. hit his first home run of the season and Rusber Estrada hit his ninth home run of the season. Jalen Miller earned the win after allowing two runs in his three innings of work. The Dirty Birds bullpen did not allow an earned run in their combined four innings.
The Dirty Birds are on the road next week as they travel to York and Lancaster for two three-game series. The Birds are home on Tuesday June 4 to kick off a nine-game homestand.
Southern Maryland 7, Gastonia 5
Despite rallying back to score five straight runs and tie the game, Gastonia fell to Southern Maryland on Saturday night 7-5, which snapped the Club’s five-game winning streak.
Brett Daniels started for Gastonia, and the right-hander allowed four runs on five hits in the third inning.
The big hit in the frame was off the bat of Anthony Brocato – a three-run shot to put the Crabs up 4-0. Brocato now has 10 homers on the season and leads the Atlantic League with 31 RBIs.
Daniels allowed another long ball in the fourth, this one off the bat of Alan Alonso.
Alonso was in the lineup playing third base for Southern Maryland, the same position that Ian Yetsko manned the first two games of the series. Yetsko, who made three errors the night prior, was replaced in the lineup by Alonso.
The Blue Crabs led 5-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, when Gastonia started gaining momentum.
Kevin Watson Jr, coming off his 3-for-4 birthday performance on Friday, knocked in Josh Stowers with a single to make it 5-1.
Gastonia proceeded to score at least a run in four consecutive innings, from the fourth through the seventh.
Jake Hoover and Jack Reinheimer each hit RBI singles in the fifth to cut the deficit to two, which was followed by an Eric De La Rosa run-scoring single in the sixth to cut it to 5-4.
Southern Maryland starter Shawn Semple came back out to start the seventh, and he allowed back-to-back hits by the bottom of the Gastonia order.
Justin Wylie doubled before Hoover hit his second RBI single of the contest – a line drive right up the middle to tie the game at 5 in the bottom of the seventh.
Gastonia right-hander Zach Vennaro entered for the eighth, and he struggled with his control, walking the first two batters he faced. It certainly didn’t help that it started raining at CaroMont Health Park.
Vennaro allowed a go-ahead two-run single by Aaron Hill before a rain delay was called.
That single proved to be the game-winner on Saturday night, as the Gastonia offense struck out five times in two innings against closer Endrys Briceno, failing to score.
Gastonia fell to 19-9 on the year after dropping Game 3 of the series 7-5.
The fourth and final contest of the series is on Memorial Day at noon.
Staten Island 12, York 7
(May 26, 2024 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution and Staten Island FerryHawks faced off in a slugfest on Sunday afternoon with the FerryHawks taking the division lead back with a 12-7 win.
Things got off to a good start as after a rough first inning in his previous outing, Revs lefty Ethan Lindow retired the side in order in the first inning.
His offense gave him an early cushion with Matt McDermott leading York’s half of the first with a triple to right. Two batters later, David Washington conquered the left field Arch Nemesis yet again, blasting his 10th home run in just 21 games as a Rev and spotting them an early 2-0 lead.
Staten Island answered quickly, rattling off four consecutive hits in the top of the second inning. The latter two of that stretch were a pair of back-to-back home runs. Robert Brooks hit a three-run shot over the Nemesis and Ben Norman followed with his second home run in as many games on a drive to right, suddenly putting the FerryHawks up 4-2.
After the first two reached for York in the second inning, the Revs evened the game with a pair of productive outs. An RBI ground out by Brandt Broussard followed by a Ciaran Devenney sacrifice fly tied things up at four apiece.
Lindow escaped a bases loaded jam in the third and started the fourth inning but was lifted after a walk and single to begin the frame. Debuting lefty Neil Lang entered in his place and was greeted with a double steal putting two in scoring position. That set up a pair of runs which scored on an RBI groundout by Nate Scantlin and a single by Taylor Motter.
The FerryHawks added another pair in the fifth on yet another home run for Brooks, this time a two-run shot to right center making it 8-4 after five.
York started its attempt to chip away in the bottom of the sixth as Colton Welker walked and Kobe Kato drove him home with a two-out triple to right on the ninth pitch of his at-bat against starter Mike Shawaryn, cutting the deficit to 8-5.
Moises Lugo entered for the seventh but allowed his first run since his first outing of the season, as Norman singled home Brooks who had doubled one batter earlier.
Two more runs scored in the eighth on a Pablo Sandoval single up the middle against lefty Denny Bentley, putting Staten Island up 11-5.
York tried to string together a rally in the eighth against reliever Bryan Warzek. The Revs loaded the bases with two outs on a trio of walks before Devenney worked a full count and walked to force in a run.
After the FerryHawks opted for closer Robbie Baker, McDermott narrowly beat out an infield single up the middle, plating another run and cutting the margin to 11-7 before Baker struck out Donovan Casey to strand the bases loaded.
Staten Island snuck one more run across in the top of the ninth on a dropped pop up with the infield fly rule in effect. York got the final out of the inning on a force at second base, but the home plate umpire deemed that the runner had crossed before the out was recorded.
Jacob Rhinesmith ripped a two-out single in the ninth but Welker flied out to the warning track in deep center field to end the game.
Now a game back of first place at 16-12, York will look to earn a four-game split on Monday afternoon when Aaron Fletcher takes the hill, opposed by Staten Island lefty Aaron Leasher at 2 PM. The Memorial Day Matinee features a Memorial Day Picnic. It is also a WellSpan Sports Medicine Silver Sluggers day. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
Notes: The Revs bullpen allowed six runs (five earned) in Sunday’s game after allowing just two runs in its previous 27.2 innings. Lugo’s run snapped a nine-outing scoreless streak spanning 8.2 innings; he allowed just four hits on that stretch. Bentley was tagged with two runs after allowing just one run in his previous seven appearances. Frankie Bartow yielded an unearned run in the ninth snapping a four-outing scoreless streak; he has still allowed an earned run just once in his last eight appearances. McDermott added to his league-highs with a 25-game on-base streak, his fourth triple, and 41 hits on the season after a 3-for-5 performance which extended his hitting streak to 13 consecutive games. McDermott has multiple hits in 10 of the last 12 including five three-hit efforts in his last seven. Washington now has 10 homers and 26 RBI in his first 21 games with York; he has now recorded an extra-base hit in eight of his last ten games with 11 total extra-base hits on that stretch. Welker went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and three runs scored and has now hit safely in nine straight starts and 10 of his 11 total starts. Kato reached base all four times, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI triple; he is now 7-for-12 with a pair of triples in his last four games.
Lancaster 5, Long Island 4
Finally!
For the first time this season, the Lancaster Stormers held onto a late lead, defeating the Long Island Ducks, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Fairfield Properties Ballpark. The win earned a split of the four-game holiday weekend series.
The first team save did not come without angst. James Hoyt recorded the first two outs of the ninth easily and worked ahead of Tyler Dearden, 0-2. Dearden was grazed by the next pitch. Ryan McBroom walked on a 3-2 pitch, and Chance Sisco was also hit to load the bases. Hoyt faced lefty hitting Taylor Kohlway and struck him out on three pitches to lock down the Lancaster win.
Lancaster had forged the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Joseph Carpenter led off with a double into the left field corner, his third hit of the afternoon. Two outs later, Trevor Bettencourt (1-1) hit Chad Sedio with a pitch. Kyle Kasser, signed on Friday, picked up his first Atlantic League base hit, a two-run double yanked into the right field corner, to put Lancaster over the top.
McBroom singled home a pair of runs off starter Nile Ball in the home half of the third, but Lancaster responded quickly. Shawon Dunston, Jr. ripped a double into right center off Stephen Woods, Jr. with one out in the fourth. Carpenter reached on a bobble by shortstop Manuel Geraldo. A wild pitch brought Dunston home, and Carpenter scored when Gaige Howard plugged the gap in right center with his double.
Justin Farmer’s sixth inning sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth gave Lancaster a brief lead, but the Ducks jumped ahead in the bottom of the inning when Aaron Antonini followed an error and a single with a double over Dunston’s head in center that drove in both.
Augie Sylk (2-2) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning. Kyle Johnson retired the side in order in the eighth inning.
Lancaster will be off on Memorial Day before traveling back to the New York City area to start a three-game series against Staten Island on Tuesday. Noah Bremer (1-1) will take the hill for the Stormers against right-hander John Esposito (0-0). Fans may tune in on FloBaseball, beginning at 6:25.
NOTES: Ball struck out four, giving him 325 as a Stormer…That ties manager Ross Peeples for second on the all-time list…He has walked only nine in 34.1 innings this season…Lancaster banged out five doubles on the day…Carpenter has hit safely in five straight, a personal season high…The Stormers will return to Long Island for consecutive weekends in late July and early August.
