Gastonia 4, High Point 3

GASTONIA, N.C. – Jake Gatewood hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Gastonia Baseball Club a 4-3 win over the High Point Rockers on Thursday night at CaroMont Health Park in Gastonia. It was Gatewood’s second homer of the night and came off Rockers reliever David McKay (L, 3-1).

Gastonia took an early 2-0 lead when Kevin Watson led off the bottom of the first with a single off High Point starter Cam Bedrosian. Gatewood then homered to put the GBC in front.

The Rockers earned one run back in the second when Connor Owings singled to center and moved to third when Gastonia center fielder Joe Gray, Jr. misplayed a ball hit by Jake Washer. Brian Parreira’s sacrifice fly to center cut Gastonia’s lead to 2-1.

GBC increased its lead to 3-1 in the fourth on back-to-back singles by Patrick Mazeika and Justin Wylie. Mazeika then scored from second on Eric De La Rosa’s single to right.

The Rockers tied the game in the top of the fifth when Fritz Genther singled and Evan Edwards hit a two-run homer, his seventh of the season.

Rockers starter Cam Bedrosian went seven innings and allowed six hits and three runs while walking one and striking out four. Zach Muckenhirn pitched a scoreless eighth inning for High Point before turning it over to McKay in the ninth.

Gastonia reliever Phoenix Sanders (W, 3-0) put the Rockers down in order in the ninth to earn the win.

Owings finished with three hits for the Rockers.

High Point will return home and start a three-game series with the Charleston Dirty Birds on Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point. It will be Strikeout Cancer Night, sponsored by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. Rockers assistant general manager Caroline Cooling, a cancer survivor who has battled Hodgkins Lymphoma over the past eight months, will be honored during the game.

 

Long Island 9, York 8

York, Pa., June 27, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 9-8 on Thursday night in the final game of a three-game series at WellSpan Park.

York grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning against Ducks starter Stephen Woods Jr. on Alfredo Reyes’ RBI single and Rudy Martin Jr.’s run-scoring groundout. Tyler Dearden tied the game in the third with a two-out, two-run double to left field off Revolution starter Zach Neff. However, York went back in front 4-2 in the bottom of the third on Trey Martin’s RBI single and Reyes’ sac fly.

Long Island tied the game back up in the fifth on Dearden’s RBI single to center and a fielding error that scored Jackie Bradley Jr. It stayed that way until the seventh when the Revolution took a 7-4 lead on Jacob Rhinesmith’s RBI double and Martin’s two-run single.

The Ducks answered for a third time to tie the game at seven in the eighth, with Frank Schwindel’s two-run single to left and Aaron Antonini’s RBI single to right highlighting the inning. A two-out, two-run double down the right field line by Bradley Jr. in the ninth put the Ducks on top 9-7. Rhinesmith scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth, trimming the Ducks lead to one, but Colton Welker struck out looking to strand the tying run at third.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Woods Jr. tossed five innings of four-run ball, allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Neff also threw five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Peyton Williams (1-1) picked up the win with one and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks with two strikeouts. Frankie Bartow (1-2) took the loss, conceding two runs on three hits in the ninth. Ramon Santos earned his first save of the season, striking out the side in the ninth and working around an unearned run on two hits.Bradley Jr. led the Ducks offense with four hits, two RBIs, two runs and a walk. JC Encarnacion added four hits, four runs, and a walk and two stolen bases, while Dearden chipped in with two hits and three RBIs.

The Ducks continue their road trip on Friday night when they open a three-game series against the Lancaster Stormers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Long Island returns home on Tuesday, July 2, to begin a three-game series against the Charleston Dirty Birds. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). Following the game, all fans in attendance will be treated to a Fireworks Spectacular, presented by the Haugland Group. It’s also a Francesco’s Trattoria Tuesday and a Triple Play Tuesday at the ballpark. If the Ducks turn a triple play during the game, one lucky fan will be a grand prize winner of $25,000. Charleston 4, Lexington 3

(Charleston, WV – June 27, 2024) – The Dirty Birds defeated the Lexington Legends 4-3 in the series finale. Charleston improves to 11-1 against the Legends this season.

Kevin Smith earned his first win of the season after giving up two earned runs in his six innings pitched. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out 11. The three relief pitchers were lights out and did not allow a hit, run, or walk. The pitching staff combined to strike out 16 Legends hitters.

Only three Dirty Birds batters had hits in the contest. Rusber Estrada, Juan Santana, and Keon Barnum all had two singles. Barnum and Santana each drove in a run. Delino DeShields Jr. and Clint Frazier drove in the other two runs with sacrifice flyouts.

The Dirty Birds will be back at GoMart Ballpark on July 5 at 6:30pm for their Independence Day Celebration.

 

Staten Island 5, Lancaster 1

The Lancaster Stormers drew a record 8,636 to Clipper Magazine Stadium on Thursday evening, but, despite all of the excitement in the stands, it was Staten Island’s night on the field.

Aaron Leasher (6-2) checked Lancaster on three hits over seven innings, pitching the FerryHawks to a 5-1 win in the finale of a three-game series.  The game ended Staten Island’s five-game losing streak against the Stormers.

Leasher yielded three hits and walked two while striking out three.  He retired the last 11 batters he faced on the evening.

Nate Griep and Brian McKenna pitched a scoreless inning apiece to close out the win.

Only two of Lancaster’s hits reached the outfield.  They were nearly identical doubles by Trace Loehr in the third inning and Gaige Howard in the fourth.  The double by Loehr led to Lancaster’s only run as it pushed Kyle Kasser to third, and a grounder by Damon Dues picked up the tally.

Otherwise, the night belonged to Staten Island.  The FerryHawks missed out on a run in the first inning when Luis Castro was tagged out at third before Pablo Sandoval hit the plate on a bloop single to right by Joe Dunand.

The FerryHawks jumped ahead in the second.  Ben Norman reached on a slow roller down the third base line that trickled back to fair territory.  With one out, Oscar De La Cruz (0-1) walked Abiatal Avelino walked.  Both runners broke, and Chris Proctor’s throw hit Kolby Johnson’s bat deflecting wildly into foul territory as a run scored.  Johnson drove home a second run with a sacrifice fly.

Sandoval and Joe Dunand connected with a pair of doubles in the third inning to create a third run.

De La Cruz worked through the fourth inning before turning the game over to Carsie Walker.  Ben Norman drove home the fourth run with a force play grounder and scored the fifth on a single by Johnson.

Lancaster will open a three-game series against the Long Island Ducks on Friday at 6:45.  Fans may tune into the broadcast on FloBaseball, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES:  The previous record crowd was 8,485, set on Opening Night in 2008…Damon Dues lost his seven-game winning streak…Lancaster leads the seasons series, 6-3…Earlier in the day, Lancaster reactivated LHP Brady Tedesco and placed RHP James Hoyt on the injured list.
