Gastonia 8, Southern Maryland 3

GASTONIA, N.C. – Jack Reinheimer, Narciso Crook and Patrick Mazeika all went deep on Thursday night, leading the Ghost Peppers to an 8-3 win over the Blue Crabs.

Gastonia was powered by two separate four-run frames – one in the first inning and another in the sixth – to help snap its five-game losing skid.

Reinheimer hit his second leadoff homer in as many games, this one off right-hander John Kelly to get the scoring started. A few batters later, Crook blasted his sixth homer of the year 397 feet to left field. Crook’s was a three-run shot that made it 4-0 Peppers after one inning of play.

Mazeika’s homer came in the sixth, hitting a towering drive to right field for his second homer of the year. The home run followed a Justin Wylie walk, so it gave Gastonia a 6-2 lead. Dalton Guthrie made it 8-2 with a two-run single, plating Ethan Skender and Francis Grullon.

Craig Stem was signed by the Ghost Peppers on Thursday, and he quite possibly had the best outing by a Gastonia starter this season. The righty went five innings of one-run ball, the only run coming from a Pearce Howard leadoff homer in the fourth.

Stem allowed just three hits and picked up the win.

The Gastonia bullpen held onto the lead, with Luke Baker, Graham Firoved, Nick Horvath, Bryan Blanton and Kent Hasler combining to pitch for the final four frames.

Gastonia improved to 10-20 on the season, and now heads to Southern Maryland for three games this weekend. First pitch on Friday is at 6:35 p.m.

High Point Rockers 6, Charleston Dirty Birds 2

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The High Point Rockers won their 10th consecutive series with a 6-2 win over the Charleston Dirty Birds on Thursday night at GoMart Park. The Rockers took two of three games from Charleston in the series as Matt Solter tossed six shutout innings for High Point.

With the win, the Rockers have either taken two of three games in each three-game series this year, or posted a three-game sweep. The previous club record for consecutive series wins had been six.

The win gives the Rockers a 22-8 record, matching the 2022 and 2023 clubs for the best 30-game start to a season. High Point owns a 5.5 game lead over Southern Maryland (15-12) in the Atlantic League’s South Division.

Solter (W, 4-1), making his sixth start of the season, shut out the Dirty Birds through six innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out six. He pitched out of a bases loaded, no outs jam in the sixth with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to short to keep Charleston scoreless. He tossed 110 pitches in earning the victory.

The Rockers opened the scoring with two runs in the second when Aidan Brewer tripled, Nolan Watson walked, and Brewer scored on a single by Cody Wilson.  D.J. Burt followed with a single to center to plate Watson for a 2-0 lead.

High Point added a single run in the fifth when Ben Aklinski walked, move to second and third on consecutive wild pitches by Charleston starter Jonh Henriquez (L, 2-1), and scored on a sac fly from Max Viera.

The Rockers grew their lead to 5-0 in the seventh when Drew Mendoza singled and scored on Viera’s second homer of the season.

In the bottom of the seventh, Charleston’s James Nelson walked, move to second on an infield ground out and stole third before scoring on a balk by Rockers lefty Braeden Ogle. Chad Sedio laced an RB double to pull the Birds within three at 5-2.

High Point added an insurance run in the ninth when Viera reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double by Jack Conley.

Mendoza, Viera and Wilson each finished with a pair of hits and Viera led the Rockers with three RBI. Charleston was held to five hits with Travis Demeritte collecting a pair.

The Rockers return home following the game and will open a nine-game homestand at Truist Point on Friday. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. against the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars with fireworks slated for the postgame.

Lexington 9, Long Island 6

Lexington, KY– The Lexington Legends and the Long Island Ducks faced off for the final game of their three-game series. The Legends dropped the first two games and were looking to at least get one win before heading out on a six-game road trip. Former major leaguer, Tanner Tully, would take the bump for the Legends and Juan Hillman would take the hump for the Ducks;  both southpaws that played within the Cleveland Guardians organization.

Long Island would get on the board quickly as JC Encarnacion and Ronaldo Flores would hit a pair of two-run homers to put the Ducks ahead with an early 4-0 lead. The bottom of the fourth would be the end of the game for Hillman as the Legends would quickly strike back with Andy Atwood laying down an RBI double. Curtis Terry followed up his effort with a two-run homer to bring the Legends within two. Troy Viola answered back by hitting the Ducks third two-run home run of the game. The Legends refused to go quietly though, as Terry hit his second two run homer of the game before Brady Whalen tied the game 6-6 with a solo shot of his own.

In the sixth an error would put Ronaldo Flores on base, followed up by a single from Ed Johnson – his first hit in a Ducks uniform. However, Johnson and Flores would be thrown out by the Legends infield. Feeling the energy, Dylan Rock would put a double off the wall before stealing third. He would then be driven in by Paul Toetz to give the Legends the lead going into the final three frames.

Christian Edwards would come into the game in relief to start the 7th. Cody Thomas got aboard on a single before being gunned down by Austin Bates while trying to steal second. The Legends would get two aboard on walks. Two errors and a balk would bring two runners to make it a 9-6, followed by the Ducks going down in order in the eighth. Lexington was able to hold the lead, keeping the Ducks at bay to seal the win with two strong final innings from Jonathan Haab.

The Legends (16-14) get the win 9-6 over the Ducks (16-14). Tanner Tully picks up his second win of the season to improve to 2-3, while Hillman gets the loss as he falls to 0-3 on the year.

Lancaster 3, Staten Island 2
Lancaster 2, Staten Island 1

Lancaster’s bullpen locked up both ends of a doubleheader sweep early Thursday as the Stormers took 3-2 and 2-1 decisions from the Staten Island FerryHawks at SIUH Community Park.

In the opener, Scott Engler (3-0) picked up the win with a perfect inning, and Ryley Gilliam followed with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh for his fifth save.

A different set of relievers turned the trick in the second game.  Kyle Johnson (1-0) retired the side in order in the fourth to get Jackson Rees out of a bases-loaded, none out jam.  Michael McAvene took his turn, pitching Johnson out of trouble in the fifth before allowing a solo homer in the sixth.  Phil Diehl got a trio of lefties in order in the seventh, notching save number four.

Offensively, the club did just enough.  In the opener, Mason Martin staked the Stormers to a 1-0 lead with an infield single to the hole at short that plated Danny Amaral in the first inning.  Staten Island struck for a pair of runs on three hits off Keylan Killgore in the bottom of the second.  Nick Decker, who opened the inning with a double, scored on a wild pitch, and Eddy Diaz brought a second run home with a soft ground single into right.

Alex Isola lined a two-out RBI single into left, chasing Nick Ward home in the fifth inning to tie the game.

For the first time in the season, Lancaster won a game in its final at bat.  Ward ripped a double to right with one out in the seventh and took third on a misplay by Decker.  Mason Martin drilled a single off the glove of first baseman Matt Scheffler for the deciding run off Matt Dunaway (1-2).

After Johnson bailed the Stormers out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth in the nightcap, the Stormers produced their only two runs of the game on the club’s next trip to the plate.  Yeison Coca yanked a leadoff double into the left field corner off Ryan Williamson (0-2) and scored on Slater Schield’s single up the middle.  The Stormers would go on to load the bases, and Joseph Carpenter made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Staten Island could only counter with Shayne Fontana’s two-out solo homer to right in the sixth inning.

Lancaster will send RHP Noah Bremer (1-1) to the hill on Friday night against lefty Shane Barringer (0-0).  Fans may tune into FloBaseball at 6:25.

NOTES:  Lancaster has won two of three in five straight three-game sets…Engler has thrown 11 straight scoreless appearances…McAvene had a similar streak snapped on the Fontana homer…Johnson has fanned 11 in his last 6 2/3 innings…With two RBI in the first game, Martin now has 94 as a Stormer in 90 games…Max Green threw three scoreless innings in Game Two in his return to the Stormers.

York 4, Hagerstown 2
York 4, Hagerstown 0

(May 29, 2025 – Hagerstown, Md.):  The York Revolution stayed true to its recent formula with more great pitching and timely hitting in a doubleheader sweep, defeating the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars 4-2 in eight innings in the opener and 4-0 in a nightcap shutout, completing a series sweep on Thursday night at Meritus Park.

Jalen Miller began the day with a bang, bashing a leadoff home run to left on the third pitch of the afternoon for his second leadoff longball of the year and sixth total tater.

Hagerstown had a quick answer as Jesus Lujano led off the home first with a triple to right center and scored on Gary Mattis’ sac fly, squaring it at 1-1.

Bubba Alleyne drilled his first homer of the year on a drive to left in the top of the third as the Revs led again, 2-1.

York protected that lead into the late innings as starter Matt Walker worked the first three and struck out five including fanning the side in the third.

Parker Bugg and Noah Denoyer took care of scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mauricio Llovera struck out the side in the sixth but Chris Kwitzer ran into a one-out opposite field solo homer to left, tying the score at 2-2.

Boxcars starter Mike Kickham went seven strong, allowing just five hits while striking out seven with no walks. He faced just one over the minimum following Alleyne’s third inning long ball.

Hunter Dula (1-1) earned the win, whiffing a pair in a scoreless seventh to force extras out of the Revs bullpen.

Ryan Higgins advanced leadoff runner Michael Berglund to third with a sac bunt to begin the eighth and Alleyne fought his way aboard with a walk before stealing second. With the infield in, Miller socked a two-run double to left center off Hagerstown righty Rafael Kelly (1-3) providing the winning margin.

Cam Robinson coaxed a soft liner to first off the bat of Kwitzer for a game-ending double play notching his league-leading seventh save.

Alleyne opened the scoring in the nightcap, ripping a two-strike offering from Boxcars starter Matt Reitz (0-1) into right for an RBI single in the top of the second, plating Jeffrey Wehler who had led off with a double.

Wehler (3-for-3) provided the biggest swing of the night, launching a three-run homer to left in the top of the third as the lead jumped to 4-0.

That was more than enough for Revs starter Wes Scott (2-2) who chucked a dominant six innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits as he lowered his ERA to 2.40 for the season. Scott’s only two walks came with two outs in the first before he escaped a bases loaded threat and settled in for the rest of the night. His only hits allowed came on singles in each of the first three innings as he retired his final 10 batters.

Dallas Woolfolk struck out a pair in a perfect seventh close out the combo three-hit shutout, combining with Scott to set down the final 13 Boxcars of the game.

Notes: The Revs improve to 19-9, three games in front of the 2016 and 2024 clubs for best record through 28 games in franchise history. They are a season-high 10 games over .500 and their four-game lead for first place over both Staten Island and Long Island is their largest of the year. They are now on their fourth winning streak of four games (or more) this season, and have scored exactly four runs in all four games on the current streak. They are now 19-2 when scoring four runs or more (0-7 when not). They are now 6-2 in games that are tied heading into the final inning and in games decided in the final at-bat. They improve to 11-1 against the Boxcars this season having won 10 straight head-to-head, two shy of the club record for longest winning streak vs one opponent (12 consecutive wins, last season vs Hagerstown). York is 30-7 all-time vs Hagerstown, 15-3 at Meritus Park. The Revs have swept eight of the 12 series all-time including five of the six at Meritus Park. The series sweep is York’s fourth of the season which includes three in-a-row vs Hagerstown. The shutout win is the first of the year for the Revs and their first on the road since last season in Hagerstown. The doubleheader sweep is the Revs’ 31st all-time and first since 8/30/23 vs Long Island. It is the eighth road doubleheader sweep in franchise history and first since 7/31/19 at Somerset. Revs pitchers struck out 14 batters in the opener, the seventh time this season they’ve struck out 14 or more in a game this year. York pitching has a 2.17 ERA on the current four-game winning streak and a 3.51 ERA over the past 15 games. Their starters have a 3.21 ERA over the past 19 games. York leads the league in team ERA at 4.40 overall. Scott has allowed just one run on four hits combined in 16.0 innings over his last three starts.

Up Next: The Revs kick off a weeklong homestand Friday at 6:30 p.m. vs the Long Island Ducks. Revs LHP Danny Denz (0-1, 1.53) faces Ducks righty David Griffin (3-0, 2.88) in the opener.
