Lancaster Stormers 10, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 8

Tuesday night’s game at Regency Furniture Stadium went from laugher to horror show.

Up, 10-0, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Stormers finished the game with the tying run at second and winning run at first in a 10-8 win over the host Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

With the win, the Stormers took a two-game lead over Long Island in the second half Northern Division race.

Joseph Carpenter slugged two homers, and Alex Isola added one as the Stormers backed Noah Bremer (7-2) with a 15-hit attack.  Nick Ward added three hits; Mason Martin had a pair of hits and pair of RBI.  Kevin Watson, Jr. ignited it all with a two-run double in the top of the second.

It appeared to be a cushy night for the Stormers as Bremer pitched one-hit baseball for six innings, walking one and striking out six.

The bullpen was not as fortunate.

The seventh inning produced a two-out solo homer by Bret Barrera off A.J. Alexy.  Harmless enough.

In the eighth, Slater Schield made a throwing error on a leadoff grounder by Gio Digiacomo.  Alexy never got another out.  Following a wild pitch, he walked Lyle Lin.  Both moved up on a passed ball before Jackson Loftin slugged a three-run homer wall over the boards in left.  Zach Racusin added a single, and Alejandro De Aza walked, forcing Alexy out of the game.  Kyle Johnson took over and struck out Cael Chatham for the first out.  Barrera and Jamari Baylor followed with singles to cut the lead to 10-5.  A sac fly by Pearce Howard brought the Crabs to within four.  Digiacomo struck out to end the inning.

Jackson Rees entered for the ninth and was uncharacteristically wild.  He walked Ryan McCarthy before striking out Loftin on a wild pitch.  The next two batters walked.  Scott Engler was marched into the game and retired pinch hitter Dondrei Hubbard on a pop up to first.  Then, after working ahead in the count on both Barrera and Baylor, he issued walks.

Finally, with a 1-2 count on Howard, the right-hander got a swinging third strike for his third save.  The Stormers could finally breathe.

Matt Swarmer (0-3) will take the hill on Wednesday against right-hander Andrew Thurman (5-1).  Fans may follow the action on FloBaseball, starting at 6:30.

NOTES:  The game was Ross Peeples’ 1,000th as the Stormers manager and his 514th win…The six-game winning streak is Lancaster’s longest of the season…Lancaster is 9-0 with Joe Campagna behind the plate…Carpenter had Lancaster’s sixth multi-homer game of the season…Campagna has reached base in 24 straight games…Watson has a six-game hitting streak…The Stormers have left 53 runners on base in the last five games (27 in the last two)…Bremer has won seven of his last eight decisions.

Lexington Legends 7, Gastonia Ghost Peppers 6

Lexington, KY- Lexington beats the Gastonia Ghost Peppers 7-6 in the first game of their homestand. Gastonia would sneak in a run early, but the Legends swiftly tied the game back up on a Brian Fuentes sac fly. Both teams would then plate three runs in the fourth inning, with Lexington’s runs coming off RBI’s from EJ Cumbo and Mason Dinesen before they capped off the inning with a solo shot from Ryan McCarthy. Pedro Gonzalez laid down an RBI single in the fifth. The Ghost Peppers would plate two in the sixth; however, McCarthy left the yard for the second time in the night before the Legends pulled ahead on an RBI single from Xane Washington.

The Legends returned home after a less-than-stellar road trip as they look to get back on track in a six-game series against the Ghost Peppers. This series will have serious implications for the postseason, as both Gastonia and Lexington battle it out for the first-place spot in the South Division. The Legends gave the start to Wilton Castillo, whose last start against the Ghost Peppers resulted in a Legends win as Castillo only allowed one run to score. Gastonia handed it to John Wilson, whose last outing against Lexington ended in a Ghost Peppers victory despite allowing three runs to score.

Gastonia hopped out to an early lead when Justin Wylie, who reached on a walk, was able to reach home safely while the Legends’ infield was preoccupied with getting the out at first base. Both teams would go three up three down in the second, and Gastonia would again go down in order in the third. However, the Legends would get the bottom of the third started with back-to-back singles from Ryan McCarthy and Jerry Huntzinger. McCarthy was then driven in by a sac fly from Brian Fuentes that tied the game at one a piece.

Gastonia pulled away in the top of the fourth when Eric De La Rosa laid down a bases-loaded RBI double that brought in three runners for Gastonia. However, Lexington immediately answered back, starting with an RBI triple hit by EJ Cumbo. He was then driven in by a sac fly from Mason Dinesen before Ryan McCarthy left the yard with a solo shot that made it a 4-4 ballgame. Xane Washington would lay down a lead-off single that took Wilson out of the game. Washington would then steal second before being driven in by an RBI single from Pedro Gonzalez that put Lexington in the lead. Jack Reinheimer would then lay down an RBI single of his own in the sixth that tied the game before Narciso Crook came home during a Legends double play that put Gastonia ahead. This lead did not last long as Ryan McCarthy hit a solo shot that tied the game in the seventh. Washington would then lay down an RBI single to bring in Jerry Huntzinger to put Lexington back in the lead.

John Armstong would come in for relief in the top of the seventh as he easily dispatched the Gastonia batters. Gonzalez would lay down a two-out double in the seventh, but the Legends were unable to drive him in. Lexington would make another pitching change in the eighth, handing it off to Brian Zeldin, who was able to protect the Legends’ lead. Jonathan Haab came into the game to close it out in the ninth as he secured the Legends’ victory.

Lexington gets the win 7- 6 to secure the first win of the six-game series against the Ghost Peppers. This victory cuts Gastonia’s first-place lead to a half game as Lexington attempts to retake the South Division. The win is given to Jimmy Loper, whose record goes to 3-1 on the season, and the save is given to Jonathan Haab, who earns his 14th save of the season. The loss is given to Donovan Benoit, who earns his second loss of the season. The Legends and Ghost Peppers will return to Legends Field on August 13th for game two of their series for Bark In The Park, with first pitch slated for 6:45 PM EST. ]

High Point Rockers 8, Charleston Dirty Birds 4

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – High Point’s Erich Uelmen spun six shutout innings, allowed three hits and set a club record with 13 strikeouts as the Rockers won the series opener vs. Charleston 8-4 on Tuesday night at GoMart Park.

Uelmen (W, 3-3) broke the club record of 12 strikeouts previously shared by Ryan Weiss (2024), Michael Bowden (2019) and Edwin Carl (2019). The 13 K’s also ties the season high for an Atlantic League pitcher as York’s Chris Vallimont struck out 13 Rockers on July 15.

Uelmen allowed just three hits and one walk through six innings of work.

Reliever Daniel Blair fanned three in his 1.2 innings of work and Kyle Halbohn added two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. The High Point staff fanned 18 batters, tying the club record set against York on Aug. 9, 2019.

Evan Edwards, re-signed by the Rockers earlier on Tuesday, collected a base hit in the seventh inning. When Edwards’ contract was purchased by the Los Angeles Angels in May, he had a 15-game hitting streak and on Tuesday extended it to 16 games. Edwards had been tied with Ryan Grotjohn (2024) and Dante Bichette (2019) who each had 15-game hitting streaks.

The Rockers improved to 58-36 overall and 17-14 in the second half. The Rockers are third in the Atlantic League’s South Division, trailing Lexington (18-12) by a half-game and Gastonia (19-12) by two games. Lexington topped Gastonia on Tuesday night as they started a six-game series at Legends Field.

The Rockers took the lead, which they would not relinquish, two runs in the second inning. Cody Wilson legged out a broken bat single to short that scored Luke Napleton who had singled to open the frame. Ben Aklinski then walked with the bases loaded to give the Rockers a 2-0 lead.

The lead grew to 5-0 with three runs in the fourth on an Aklinski RBI single, a run-scoring double by Alex Dickerson and a sac fly from Luke Napleton.

Aklinski finished the game with four hits and two RBI and has now driven in a run in six consecutive games, one shy of the club record.
