York 7, Lexington 5

(August 20, 2024 – Lexington, Ky.):  The York Revolution stormed back with a four-run seventh inning to claim a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over the Lexington Legends on Tuesday night at Legends Field, opening a six-game road trip with their fourth consecutive victory.

York jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first as David Washington rocketed a two-run double to right center, giving him 11 RBI over the past four games.

Revs starter Jon Olsen cruised the first time through the order, but Nilo Rijo connected on a solo homer to left center with two outs in the third to slice the lead in half at 2-1.

Jacob Barfield belted a three-run homer to left with two outs in the fourth, propelling the Legends ahead 4-2 as Lexington tagged Olsen for just his seventh and eighth home runs allowed all season.

Kole Cottam smacked a two-out RBI double to right field to plate an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth as the margin grew to 5-2.

York struggled against Lexington starter Nic Laio after the quick start as the righty retired 10 straight through the second out of the fourth inning, nine of which came on strikeouts. Laio struck out four in-a-row and another five consecutive batters over that span, whiffing 11 total batters through five innings but was lifted after requiring 108 pitches to get through five frames.

Olsen settled back in with a 1-2-3 sixth, and the Revs went to work against the Lexington bullpen in the seventh.

Jordy Barley got things started against reliever Gerald Ogando with a leadoff walk and stole second before Rudy Martin Jr dropped down a bunt single to put runners at the corners. Matt McDermott (eight-game hitting streak) singled through the right side to bring home Barley as the Revs pulled within 5-3. A wild pitch moved runners to second and third and Zander Wiel made it a one-run game with a broken bat RBI ground out, also advancing McDermott to third as the tying run. That proved pivotal as with two outs, Jacob Rhinesmith slapped a game-tying infield single off Ogando’s glove as the Revs clawed all the way back to tie the score at 5-5. Alejandro Rivero greeted reliever Jean Herrera with a go-ahead RBI double off the left field wall, sending Rhinesmith all the way around from first base for a 6-5 lead.

York added an insurance run on a dropped pop up in the eighth, plating Alfredo Reyes who had led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced via a balk and a stolen base.

Olsen (10-1) worked 6.1 innings to pick up the win, allowing five runs (four earned).

Denny Bentley took over with one on and one out in the seventh and retired both batters faced to preserve what was at the time a one-run lead.

Alex Valverde was lights out with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 eighth.

Matt Turner was greeted with a double and a single to start the ninth but set down the next three to pull into a tie for the league lead in saves with his 14th of the year.

Notes: The Revs improve to 68-33, a new franchise record 35 games over .500 while tying Gastonia for the league’s top overall record. The Revs maintain their half-game lead for first place in the second half at 25-13. York improves to a league-best 36-15 on the road. The Revs now have 11 wins (11-21) when trailing after six innings. Martin Jr became the ninth in league history to record 70 steals in a season when he stole second base in the top of the first inning, the league’s highest total since 2021. The Revs totaled four steals on the night, bringing their season total to 285 stolen bases, 20 shy of a league record. Rhinesmith (3-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 11 games while he has driven in a run in seven straight contests. With seven strikeouts, Olsen took over the league lead with 116 on the season. Olsen becomes the league’s third 10-game winner this season, joining teammate Ethan Lindow who leads the league with 11 victories; the duo gives the Revs multiple 10-game winners in a season for the eighth time in franchise history and second consecutive year. The Revs bullpen tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, as they have allowed just three earned runs in 25.2 innings over the last nine contests; the bullpen’s totals on that stretch include just 14 hits and eight walks compared to 34 strikeouts. Bentley logged his eighth consecutive scoreless outing; he has allowed just two hits in 7.2 innings over that span. Valverde has allowed just one earned run in 15.1 innings over his last 10 appearances, striking out 20 against just two walks on that stretch. Turner’s 14 saves move him into the top 10 in a season in Revs history. York righty Michael Horrell (4-5, 5.81) faces Lexington’s Wesley Scott (0-1, 2.03) on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:25 p.m.

Long Island 8, Staten Island 6

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 20, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Staten Island FerryHawks 8-6 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.

Four two-out runs in the bottom of the second inning gave the Ducks a 4-0 lead. Kole Kaler’s RBI double, Nick Heath’s two-run double and Yonny Hernandez’s RBI single did the damage. A wild pitch by FerryHawks starter Mike Shawaryn that plated Ryan McBroom and an RBI single by Zach Racusin in the third increased the Ducks lead to six. Heath then scored on a throwing error in the fourth to make it 7-0 Long Island.

Staten Island plated a pair of runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Matt Scheffler and Nate Scantlin off Ducks starter Daniel Corcino. It stayed that way until the seventh when Ryan McBroom launched a towering solo homer to left, ballooning the Ducks lead to 8-2. The FerryHawks rallied for four runs in the ninth on a bases loaded walk by Scantlin and a three-run double by Luis Castro. However, the Ducks squashed the rally thereafter.

Corcino (6-7) earned the win, tossing five innings of two-run ball, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out one. Shawaryn (6-8) suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks in four innings with one strikeout. Al Alburquerque picked up his first save of the season after recording the final two outs.

McBroom led the Ducks offense with two hits, an RBI and two runs. Hernandez and Aaron Antonini each added two hits, while Heath finished with a hit, two walks, two RBIs and two runs.

The Ducks and FerryHawks continue their three-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Fairfield Properties Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders). It’s also a Wendy’s Wednesday and a Waddle In Wednesday at the ballpark. Left-hander Jimmy Robbins (6-5, 5.00) takes the mound for the Ducks against FerryHawks righty Nate Roe (1-1, 5.14).

 High Point 5, Gastonia 2

HIGH POINT, N.C.- The High Point Rockers secured a decisive 5-2 victory over the Gastonia Baseball Club on Tuesday night at Truist Point, powered by a dominant pitching performance from starter Cam Bedrosian and timely hitting from their lineup.

Bedrosian was electric on the mound, recording 11 strikeouts over six innings while allowing just one run and a pair of hits. The single flaw came in the top of the second inning when Justin Wylie, the league’s home run leader, launched a solo shot, his 31st of the year, to give Gastonia an early 1-0 lead.

Gastonia starter Harrison Francis (L, 1-3) struggled with his control, walking the bases loaded in the first but escaping unscathed.

The Rockers quickly responded to Gastonia’s initial run by scoring in the bottom half of the inning with aggressive baserunning. Francis again walked the first two batters of the inning before Evan Edwards scored on a groundout by Brian Parreira, tying the game at 1-1. Moments later, Michael Martinez crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice by DJ Burt, giving the Rockers a 2-1 lead. Francis retired Martin Figueroa on a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

Bedrosian stayed in control, retiring Gastonia in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Rockers extended their lead in the third with a Quincy Nieporte single, driving in Ryan Grotjohn to make it 3-1.

High Point continued to apply pressure in the fifth inning. After a leadoff single by Ben Aklinski, Nieporte drove him home with a line-drive single to left field, pushing the Rockers’ advantage to 4-1. Francis was relieved by Trent Fennell after 4.1 innings, but the damage had already been done.

In the seventh inning, Edwards ripped his 14th home run of the season, a solo blast that pushed the Rockers ahead 5-1. The bullpen kept the lead secure, with Garrett Schilling and Will Carter each pitching a scoreless inning in relief of Bedrosian.

Despite loading the bases in the top of the eighth, Gastonia couldn’t capitalize until a home run from Jacob Robson in the ninth off reliever Zach Vennaro. High Point’s defense and pitching held strong, maintaining their three-run lead.

The Rockers improved to 21-17, moving to within a game of second place Gastonia (22-16). High Point will look to build on this momentum as they continue their homestand against Gastonia on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point.

Lancaster 9, Hagerstown 3

Hagerstown, MD* – The Lancaster Stormers powered their way to a convincing 9-3 victory over the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars on Tuesday night, fueled by a balanced offensive attack and solid pitching performances.

The game started slowly for both teams, with Lancaster breaking the ice in the second inning on a home run by Nick Hulsizer. The Stormers added another run in the third, with Hulsizer’s RBI single scoring Damon Dues.

Hagerstown responded in the bottom of the third inning when a Cito Culver home run – his 11th of the season.

In the seventh inning, Lancaster broke the game open, with a two run single courtesy of Mason Martin. Hagerstown tried to mount a comeback, however, the Flying Boxcars’ momentum was halted as the Stormers’ bullpen shut them down the rest of the way.

Lancaster’s bullpen was outstanding, with Alexy picking up the win in relief, throwing 1.1 innings of one-hit ball. The combination of Alexy, Diehl, and Johnson held Hagerstown scoreless over the final three innings, with Diehl and Johnson combining for five strikeouts.

Hagerstown’s starter, Mike Kickham, took the loss, allowing three runs over five innings while walking four and striking out four. The Flying Boxcars’ bullpen struggled to contain the Stormers, with each reliever giving up at least one run.

The Stormers will look to continue their strong play as the series continues tomorrow night.
