Hagerstown Flying Boxcars 12, Lancaster Stormers 4
It took seven games for new Hagerstown manager Shane Turner to win for the first time.
His Flying Boxcars picked up that win with an exclamation point.
Hagerstown belted five homers and three doubles en route to a 12-4 win over the host Lancaster Stormers Tuesday evening at Penn Medicine Park in the opener of a three-game series.
Joe DeLuca led the 17 hit Hagerstown attack with a pair of homers, double and six RBI while Ossie Abreu also connected twice and drove in four. Miles Williams hit the other homer, a solo shot in the fifth off Keylan Killgore (1-3).
Hagerstown carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth thanks to Abreu’s first long ball, a shot to right center in the second.
Lancaster scored three unearned runs off Mike Kickham (1-3) in the home fourth. Joseph Carpenter and Ariel Sandoval, who each banged out three hits, opened the inning with consecutive singles. Nick Lucky bunted into a force play for the first out. LeDarious Clark followed with a bounder to short, which Abreu fired into right field for an error as Sandoval raced home. Slater Schield grounded to short to produce a second run, and Welington Dotel dropped Danny Amaral’s fly ball to right, allowing a third run to cross the plate.
Homers by DeLuca and Williams tied the game in the top of the fifth, but the Stormers were able to reestablish the lead in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Carpenter beat out an infield single. Sandoval followed with a long double to center as Lancaster grabbed its final lead at 4-3.
Thanks to an out at the plate on a would-be wild pitch, Killgore continued to hold the one-run lead with two outs into the sixth.
From there, the inning, and the night, fell apart for Lancaster.
Killgore walked Abreu and allowed a single to left by Joe Campagna before departing. Jackson Rees was summoned, and the right-hander, who had stranded all 11 runners inherited from a previous pitcher, yielded a two-run double to the right center gap by DeLuca.
Kyle Johnson got through the seventh inning unscathed, but Abreu and DeLuca connected off Scott Engler in the eighth to stretch the lead to 7-4. The Flying Boxcars tacked on five more in the ninth, two each on singles by Abreu and DeLuca.
Lancaster will send lefty Max Green (0-0) to the hill on Friday night against right-hander David Richardson (1-5). Fans may tune into Blue Ridge 11 or FloBaseball, beginning at 6:40.
NOTES: Carpenter is batting over .400 at home…Mason Martin reached on an infield single in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to eight games…Amaral had Lancaster’s only hit after the fifth inning, beating out a slow chopper to short in the ninth…Schield walked in the sixth inning and has now reached base in 20 of 22 games played.
Charleston Dirty Birds 5, High Point Rockers 4
HIGH POINT, NC- With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth, Charleston designated hitter James Nelson hit a solo home run to give the Dirty Birds a 5-4 win over the High Point Rockers in the series opener on Tuesday night at Truist Point.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Rockers struck for two runs to tie the game at 4-4. Luis Gonzalez led off with a bloop double to left and Drew Mendoza drew a walk. Max Viera followed with a run-scoring double and Jack Conley delivered a sacrifice fly to knot the game.
Rockers reliever Stevie Branche (L, 0-1) fanned the first two batters he faced in the top of the ninth before Nelson homered to left to put Charleston ahead 5-4. Charleston’s Joe Record set the Rockers down in order in the ninth to record his third save of the season.
Even with the loss the Rockers continue to lead the Atlantic League’s South Division at 25-9. The win brings the Birds to 18-16.
Charleston did not make the first inning easy on the Rockers, scoring three times with the Chad Sedio and Travis Demeritte each providing an RBI single off Rockers’ starter Cooper Casad. Nelson scored on a double to center field by Benjamin Blackwell to give the Dirty Birds a 3-0 lead.
High Point attempted to battle back with Ben Alinkski driving in D.J. Burt on an infield groundout in the first.
Charleston increased its lead to 4-1 in the second on back-to-back doubles by Alsandr Womack and Sedio.
High Point reliever Tommy Doyle came on in the fourth and threw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four.
The Rockers cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth when Max Viera was hit by a pitch and, after stealing second, scored on a single by Jack Conley.
Charleston’s Eddy Demurias (W, 1-1) pitched the eighth and, while allowing the Rockers to score twice, set himself up for the win.
The Rockers will look for revenge against the Dirty Birds Wednesday, June 4th at Truist Point. Expect to see a large crowd for the game, as free entry is allowed to anyone who has proof of High Point residency.
NOTES: RHP Jameson McGrane was activated as a pitcher for the Rockers earlier Tuesday. A Limestone University alum, McGrane pitched for High Point for the first half of 2024 and was the Rockers team leader with 14 saves. McGrane pitched a scoreless seventh inning on Tuesday night.
Long Island Ducks 4, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 3
(Central Islip, N.Y., June 3, 2025) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 4-3 on Tuesday evening in the opener of a three-game series at Fairfield Properties Ballpark.
Southern Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Brett Barrera’s RBI single off Long Island starter Zach Plesac. The Blue Crabs made it 2-0 in their favor in the fourth when Barrera launched a two-out solo home run to left field.
The visitors made it 3-0 in the sixth thanks to a Jamari Baylor solo roundtripper to left. The Ducks tied the game at three in the home half of the inning on an RBI double off the bat of Troy Viola versus Blue Crabs starter Andrew Thurman and run-scoring singles produced by Taylor Kohlwey and Justin O’Conner off reliever Rafi Vazquez. Thomas’ one-out solo four-bagger to right centerfield against Cody Thompson gave Long Island their first lead of the ballgame and was the difference in the contest.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Plesac pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to go along with six strikeouts. Thurman tossed five and two-thirds innings of two-run ball, giving up five hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Braydon Nelson (1-0) notched his first win as a member of the Flock with a scoreless frame. Thompson (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering one run on two hits. Staten Island FerryHawks 10, York Revolution 3
(June 3, 2025 – York, Pa.): The York Revolution saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, falling to the Staten Island FerryHawks, 10-3 on Tuesday evening at WellSpan Park. York falls to 22-12 as they now lead the North Division by four games for first place.
Playing as Ritmo de York for the first time this season, the Revs fell behind early as Matt Scheffler bombed a two-out, three-run homer over the Arch Nemesis. Shayne Fontana connected on a three-run homer to right center in the second, also with two outs, and Eddy Diaz legged out an attempted double play turn for an RBI fielder’s choice in the third as the visitors led 7-0 early.
York got on the board in the bottom of the third as Michael Berglund singled to right and Jalen Miller drilled a double down the left field line to set the table. Frankie Tostado brought a run home with an RBI ground out to second to make it a 7-1 game.
Revs starter Wes Scott (2-3) appeared to make an adjustment in the fourth, striking out the first two batters of the inning but got smoked by a line drive comebacker off the bat of Brandon Martorano. Despite being knocked to the ground, Scott gathered the ball and flipped to first for the final out of the inning. After being tended to on the mound, the Revs righty walked off under his own power.
J.C. Ramirez took over in the fifth and recorded a pair of ground outs to start the inning, but Aaron Takacs and Mark Contreras went back-to-back with home runs, extending the lead to 9-1.
The Revs scored two of their own in the bottom of the fifth as Ryan Higgins drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored all the way from second on Marty Costes’ two-out infield single. Costes made it five consecutive games with an RBI, and Tostado followed by hammering his league-leading 20th double in just 34 games high off the batters’ eye in center field, plating Costes to make it 9-3 as Tostado collected his ninth RBI in four contests.
Nate Scantlin led off the sixth with a homer to right center, the FerryHawks’ fifth long ball of the night. The five home runs allowed are the most by the Revs in a game since June 17, 2023 vs Long Island, and it gave a boost to a FerryHawks offense that entered play last in the league with 24 homers, eight fewer than the next closest clubs.
Ian Churchill and Lukas Galdoni handled scoreless frames out of the Revs bullpen, and catcher William Simoneit saved the staff another inning of work, tossing a scoreless ninth in his second pitching appearance in four days.
The Revs managed three runs off Hawks starter Morgan McSweeney (4-0), his most allowed in a game this season, but the Staten Island righty went a season-high seven innings in the win. He limited York to six hits, walked two, and struck out seven.
Trayson Kubo finished it with two perfect innings out of the FerryHawks bullpen.
York will look to even the series on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as lefty Danny Denz (0-1, 1.31) faces Staten Island southpaw Ryan Williamson (0-2, 7.71). It is Ritmo de York presented by WLCH FM Radio Centro, Motorsports Night presented by BAPS Motor Speedway, BAPS Motor Speedway Ticket Voucher Giveaway (first 500 fans), Bark in the Park presented by Stateline Canine, Pregame parade and photo op for Woof Pack Members, and Winning Wednesday presented by Pennsylvania Lottery. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
Gastonia Ghost Peppers 2, Lexington Legends 1
GASTONIA, N.C. – The Gastonia offense was lifeless and in need of a spark.
Lexington starter Nic Laio had allowed just two Ghost Pepper hits through seven scoreless frames.
The right-hander came back out for the eighth, facing Kevin Watson Jr. with one on and one out in a 1-0 Legends lead.
And Watson Jr. came through for Gastonia, belting a go-ahead two-run homer to right field, leading the Peppers to a 2-1 win on Tuesday night.
The first 14 Ghost Peppers batters were retired by Laio in the contest, with Narciso Crook becoming Gastonia’s first base runner with a two-out single in the fifth.
However, right-hander Matt Hartman matched Laio through five. Hartman threw five shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out four.
The game was scoreless heading to the sixth. As soon as Hartman was pulled for the lefty John Wilson, Lexington managed to strike first. Curtis Terry hit his seventh homer of the season to lead off the frame, giving Lexington a 1-0 advantage.
The Legends ended up stranding 10 runners on base over the first seven innings of the game, with eight of those runners being left in scoring position. Between Hartman, Cory Thompson and Bryan Blanton, the righty arms were all able to work into and out of jams to keep the contest close.
Watson Jr. knocked Laio out of the game with his eventual game-winning homer in the eighth to make it 2-1 in favor of the Peppers, and Nick Snyder came on the for save in the ninth.
After a one-out Pedro Gonzalez single, Xane Washington hit a routine fly ball toward the left-field line and Crook ran over to make the grab. Now why is this worth mentioning? Because Gonzalez attempted to steal second on the pitch, so he was standing up at second by the time Crook made the catch. Crook threw toward first base at the same time Gonzalez tried getting back, the throw one-hopping to Watson Jr. just in time to end the game on a double play.
Snyder picked up his fifth save of the season following the wild finish, as Gastonia won its third consecutive game and improved to 13-21 on the year.
The Ghost Peppers look to win their fourth straight on Wednesday, with first pitch at 12:30 p.m.
