Long Island 7, Staten Island 5

The Staten Island FerryHawks were defeated by the Long Island Ducks in an extra-innings contest on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 7-5.

Staten Island starter Mike Shawaryn pitched a gem, delivering 6 strong innings. Shawaryn limited the Ducks’ offense to only 2 runs on 7 hits while punching out 4.

Offensively, every FerryHawks starter logged a hit in the 11-inning affair. Luis Castro and Roldani Baldwin each had 2 hits, making up 4 of the 11 hits for the home team in the midday matchup. Five of the 11 hits were good for extra bases, and all were doubles off the bats of Nate Scantlin, Castro, Pablo Sandoval, Ben Norman and Will Butcher. Scantlin, Castro, Sandoval, Kolby Johnson, and Butcher all logged RBI in the outing as well.

Four defensive miscues by the FerryHawks hurt Staten Island in game two of this Battle of the Belt series. Out of the 7 runs that scored for Long Island, just 5 of them were earned. Following Shawaryn, Bryan Warzek, Brian McKenna, Joe Jones and J.P. Woodward all made appearances out of the bullpen. Warzek surrendered a pair, both earned, and the run charged against Jones was unearned. Woodward was credited with the loss, giving up three hits and two runs, but just one being an earned run.

The FerryHawks look to avoid being swept by the Ducks at home on Thursday at 6:30 PM. Following the conclusion of the series, the FerryHawks will head to Lancaster to take on the Stormers for the weekend.

Lancaster 8, Hagerstown 2

For the second straight outing, Brady Tedesco was dominant.

The left-hander fired seven scoreless innings Wednesday evening to pitch the Lancaster Stormers to an 8-2 victory over the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars in the middle game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

With the win, the Stormers took a two-game lead over York in the North race.  Long Island stayed within three of the division-leading Stormers.

Tedesco (2-3) scattered three hits over his seven-inning stint, walking one and striking out eight.  The Colorado native retired 13 straight Hagerstown batters following a one-out single by Osmy Gregorio in the second inning.  He struck out every Hagerstown batter (three) that he faced with a runner in scoring position on the night.

Lancaster provided the lefty with all the offense that he needed in the first inning.  Mike Kickham (5-11) retired the first two batters before Isan Diaz rode a 3-2 pitch onto the picnic deck for his 11th home run of the season.  Niko Hulsizer and Mason Martin followed with singles.  Both scored when Joe Stewart ripped a double into the left field corner.  Joseph Carpenter picked up the fourth run of the inning with a single to center.

Chad Sedio stretched the lead to 5-0 with an RBI single in the third, and Martin extended the lead one more in the fourth with his second hit of the night.  Two more scored in the home half of the seventh.

Martin finished the night with three hits.  Stewart had two and drove in three runs.  Sedio and Joseph Carpenter added a pair of hits apiece.

Former Texas Rangers right-hander A.J. Alexy made his debut with the Stormers, throwing a perfect eighth inning.  The shutout was broken with two outs in the ninth as Osmy Gregorio followed a pair of walks with a two-run double to the gap in right center.

Lancaster will send left-hander Max Green (9-5) to the mound in the series finale on Thursday evening against right-hander Dominic Picone (0-0).  Fans may tune into the game on Blue Ridge 11 or FloBaseball, starting at 6:40.

NOTES:  Over his last two starts, Tedesco has allowed six hits and two walks in 14 innings while striking out 17…Martin extended his hitting streak to 14 games, the second longest streak on the team this season…Gaige Howard banged out his 25th double of the year, putting him into a three-way tie for the league lead…Alexy became Lancaster’s 52nd player this season.

Southern Maryland 9, York 7

(August 14, 2024 – Waldorf, Md.):  The York Revolution mounted a six-run comeback to tie the game but a pair of eighth inning runs were the difference as the Revs fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, 9-7 on Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Down 7-1 through three innings, the Revs stacked six unanswered runs to draw even, making a bid for their biggest comeback win of the season.

York plated a run in the top of the first as Matt McDermott and Rudy Martin Jr started the game with singles. A double steal prompted the first throwing error of the night by catcher Caleb Marquez as McDermott scored for a 1-0 lead.

Revs starter Jon Olsen got a big double play ball in the bottom of the first, but Anthony Brocato’s two-out RBI double to left tied it 1-1 after an inning.

Crabs starter Spencer Johnston stymied the Revs through three, retiring nine straight after the two game-opening singles while his offense built a lead.

The Revs’ top-ranked defense suffered an uncharacteristically sloppy second inning with three errors. Southern Maryland capitalized, scoring on a Marquez double to left and Jomar Reyes’ two-out infield single with another run in between coming on a throwing error.

Another three-spot in the third bumped the lead to 7-1 as Aaron Hill’s sac fly and Marquez’ two-run homer to left made the mountain steeper.

The Revs made their first move in the fourth as Jacob Rhinesmith drilled an RBI single back through the middle and Alfredo Reyes produced another run with an infield single to draw within 7-3. York ultimately left the bases loaded and did so again in the fifth after rallying with two outs.

York remained persistent and broke through in the sixth, scoring four times. Alerick Soularie doubled and Ciaran Devenney walked to set the table before McDermott sacrificed both runners along. Martin Jr capitalized with a two-run single to right center to chase Johnston and bring the Revs within 7-5.

Martin Jr stole second and prompted another throwing error from Marquez, setting up David Washington who greeted reliever Cody Thompson with a sac fly. Center fielder Travis Demeritte dropped the ball allowing Washington to reach on the error. After a steal of second, Washington scored the tying run on Zander Wiel’s double down the left field line, squaring things at 7-7.

Olsen retired his final eight batters faced as his last three innings were excellent in the no-decision.

Chris Vallimont struck out the side in the seventh, but a leadoff hit by pitch of Hill set the wheels in motion for Southern Maryland’s decisive rally in the eighth. Michael Baca gave the Crabs the lead with a one-out double off the left field wall, and Josh Broughton provided insurance with a two-out RBI single to left for the 9-7 final.

Southern Maryland relievers combined to set down each of the final nine Revs hitters and 11 of the last 12 as the Revs drew even but were ultimately unable to go in front.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 11:05 a.m. York’s Tom Sutera faces Daryl Thompson in the opener with Revs righty Michael Horrell facing Ian Kahaloa in the second game. Fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 11 a.m.

Notes: The Revs stole five bases after swiping eight in the series opener on Tuesday. They now have 267 steals on the season, moving ahead of the 2000 Somerset Patriots (265) for the second highest total in a season in league history, trailing only Gastonia’s 2022 total of 305. The Revs’ four-game road winning streak is snapped as they fall to 34-14 on the road. Martin Jr’s two hits extended his hitting streak to eight games in-a-row. Both teams committed four errors with York’s total establishing their most in a game since last August. It’s only the fourth time in Revs history that a game has featured at least eight combined errors between two teams; it is tied for the second highest total and is the most since a record 10 combined errors in a game at Charleston on July 7, 2021. York activated reliever Oliver Garcia, originally signed during the preseason; the former Pittsburgh Pirates prospect joins the Revs bullpen after pitching in Venezuela earlier this summer.

Gastonia 4, High Point 1

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Gastonia Baseball Club broke a 1-1 tie with three runs over the final three innings to take a 4-1 decision from the High Point Rockers on Wednesday night at Truist Point.

High Point starter Cam Bedrosian was marvelous in his six innings of work, retiring the first 12 men he faced and allowing just one hit. He walked one and struck out eight in getting a no-decision.

The Rockers went up 1-0 in the fourth when Michael Martinez doubled, moved to third on Brian Parreira’s bounce out to first, and scored on a sac fly to center by Trey Martin.

Gastonia’s lone run off Bedrosian came in the fifth when he walked Jake Gatewood to start the inning. Jacob Robson tripled to center to tie the game 1-1.

High Point reliever Jacob Edwards (L, 6-3) pitched the seventh and allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases. Robson then singled to right to score one run before the Rockers were able to escape on a 4-6-3 double play.

In the eighth, Zach Vennaro hit Gastonia’s Hidekel Gonzalez and that was followed by a Richie Martin triple to lift Gastonia to a 3-1 lead. Martin then scored on a passed ball for a 4-1 Gastonia advantage.

The Baseball Club’s Tyler Palm (W, 1-0), Nick Horvath and Trevor Clifton (S, 3) combined to allow the Rockers just a single baserunner over the final four innings, retiring the final 11 batters in a row.

The loss drops the Rockers to 19-13 in the second half, a half-game in front of Gastonia (19-14) and two games behind Charleston (21-12) after the Dirty Birds were shutout by Lexington 7-0 on Wednesday night.

Martinez was the lone Rocker with multiple hits as High Point had just four hits in the game while holding Gastonia to five. Robson had two hits for the GBC.

Game three of the series will take place on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. at Truist Point.

Lexington 7, Charleston 0

In Lexington, Legends starter Nic Laio handcuffed Charleston, striking out eight and allowing just five hits over seven innings to lead the Legends to a 7-0 win. Matt Bottcher and Justin Williams each drove in a pair of runs for Lexington.
