Hagerstown 6, Lancaster 3

The weather was cold and damp at Penn Medicine Park Wednesday night as the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars struck early and often en route to a 6-3 win over the host Lancaster Stormers.

It began when right-handed starter Matt Swarmer (0-3) yielded a leadoff single to Jesus Lujano. Hagerstown second baseman Gary Mattis followed that up with an RBI triple. After that, designated hitter Joe Campagna knocked Mattis in with a double.

Swarmer retired the next three batters after Hagerstown established that early 2-0 advantage. The Flying Boxcars continued the assault into the second, adding four runs on four hits in the top of the second. That offensive outburst included a two-run homer by Campagna and an RBI double off the right field wall by Joe DeLuca. Hagerstown totaled five extra-base hits in the first two frames, and led 6-0.

Lancaster jumped halfway back, however, when right-fielder Ariel Sandoval stepped to the dish after back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the second by Picone (1-1). The righty bat-handler launched his first home run of the year up the grassy slope in left. The ball traveled 422 feet and came off the bat at 106 miles per hour.

Beefy right hander Christian Scafidi came in to relieve Swarmer of his duties to start the third, and the second-year Stormer was lights out. Over three innings of work, Scafidi allowed no runs on three hits and punched out four.

The Lancaster reliever’s effort went for nought as the Stormers’ bats just couldn’t find a rhythm. Lancaster was unable to score the rest of the way despite drawing two additional walks and getting a one-out double in the third by Alex Isola. The Stormers left six runners on base and, after five full innings, and a lot more rain, the contest was delayed, and eventually called. Lancaster fell to 9-14 on the season, while Hagerstown tallied its 5th victory to go along with 18 defeats.

The Stormers finish up their three-game series with the Flying Boxcars tomorrow morning at 11. Left-hander Keylan Killgore (0-2) is set to make his fifth start of the season. Killgore will be opposed by Hagerstown lefty Mike Kickham (0-2).  Fans may tune into the action on FloBaseball, beginning at 10:55.

NOTES:  Scafidi has allowed one earned run in his last 13 innings…Lancaster’s other rain-shortened game this season was also a 6-3 loss, falling in six innings to Gastonia on May 3…Mason Martin lost a five-game hitting streak, going 0-for-3…His six-game streak to open the season remains the team’s longest this year.

High Point Rockers 12, Charleston Dirty Birds 2

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The High Point Rockers scored six runs in the first four innings en route to a 12-4 win over the Charleston Dirty Birds on Wednesday night at GoMart Park. The win gives the Rockers a four-game winning streak and their 17-6 record matches the club record for best record after 23 games.

First baseman Evan Edwards continued his torrid streak, hitting another home run and driving in four runs.

High Point continues to own the best record in the Atlantic League at 17-6 and have a 3.5 game lead over second place Lexington in the South Division. The Legends split a doubleheader with Gastonia on Wednesday.

The Rockers’ Ben Aklinski drew a two-out walk in the first then scored on a home run by Edwards, his second in as many nights and his league-leading 11th round-tripper of the season.

The Rockers increased their lead to 3-0 in the third when Aklinski beat out an infield hit, moved to third on a single by Edwards and scored on a sac fly by Jordan Luplow.

Edwards drove in two more runs in the fourth as High Point surged to a 6-0 lead.

Charleston got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as J.J. Matijevic and Alsander Womack each hit solo homers off Rockers starter Kent Emanuel (W, 3-0).

Drew Mendoza homered in the fifth to put High Point on top 7-2. In the seventh Max Viera double home a pair of runs to increase the margin to 9-2. A solo homer by Luplow in the eighth along with a Jack Conley RBI double and another Viera run-scoring double put the game away at 12-2.

Charleston tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth off reliever Matt Frisbee on a Tyler Hill two-run homer.

Staten Island 10, Long Island 7

(Staten Island, N.Y., May 21, 2025) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Staten Island FerryHawks 10-7 on Wednesday morning in the middle game of a three-game series at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park.

The Ducks made it 1-0 in their favor when Chris Roller cracked a leadoff home run to left field on the third pitch of the contest thrown by Staten Island starter Morgan McSweeney. The FerryHawks answered with five runs of their own in the home half of the frame against

Long Island starter Sterling Sharp, highlighted by a bases clearing three-run triple off the bat of Mark Contreras.

Staten Island scored a run in the second, two more in the third and one in the fourth for a 9-1 advantage thanks to a Pablo Sandoval solo home run to left, an Eddy Diaz two-run base knock and a Brandon Martorano RBI double. Long Island got to within 9-2 in the sixth thanks to a Cody Thomas sacrifice fly. Trailing 10-3 in the ninth, the Flock batted around and scored four times to cut the deficit to three runs on a Justin O’Conner two-run base hit, a Chad Pike RBI groundout and a wild pitch. With runners at the corners and two down, Jack Lynch represented the tying run, but Robbie Baker struck out Lynch swinging for his first save of the season as the Ducks rally fell just short.

McSweeney (2-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings pitched to go along with a strikeout. Sharp (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering eight runs on seven hits in three innings of work, walking and striking out three.

River Town led the way offensively for the Flock with a double, triple, run scored and a pair of walks.

Lexington 7, Gastonia 1
Gastonia 8, Lexington 7

GASTONIA, N.C. – After blowing a late 6-2 lead in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, Gastonia came from behind and won via Justin Wylie’s three-run walk-off homer in the seventh inning of Game 2, leading the Ghost Peppers to an 8-7 win and a series win over Lexington.
Wylie sent everyone home with his team-leading eighth homer of the season off Jonathan Haab while Gastonia was trailing by two in the bottom of the seventh. The slugger has now driven in 26 runs this year to go along with the eight long balls.
The opposite-field walk-off homer capped off a long day of baseball at CaroMont Health Park; a day that featured Gastonia surrendering a combined eight seven-inning runs to the Legends.
The Ghost Peppers allowed five runs in the final inning of Game 1, with the No. 9 hitter Andy Atwood hitting the game-winning three-run home run to put Lexington on top 7-6. Bryan Blanton gave up a two-run shot to Curtis Terry before Nick Snyder allowed the long ball off the bat of Atwood.
Game 1 featured five Gastonia errors, three of them charged to shortstop Jack Reinheimer. However, Reinheimer produced at the plate, hitting a two-run homer to tie the game at 2 in the third. He also walked and scored one of four Ghost Peppers runs in the fifth, giving the team the 6-2 lead they eventually surrendered.
The Ghost Peppers won in come-from-behind fashion in Game 2, as the team trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fifth; the lone run coming from Narciso Crook’s fourth homer of the season and second in as many days.
Alan Alonso hit his first homer of the year to lead off the fifth, and after Kevin Watson Jr. doubled he was brought in by a Dalton Guthrie single. Guthrie plated three with a two-bagger in Game 1, so he collected 4 RBIs on Wednesday.
Gastonia threatened down 4-3 in the sixth, with Cole Roederer and Crook starting off the frame with singles. Ethan Skender laid down a bunt to advance the runners and Alonso struck out, setting up two on with two out. Henderson Perez, who was making his Ghost Peppers debut, walked to load the bases for Reinheimer.
The shortstop hit a gapper to right-center field, plating Roederer and Crook before Perez was thrown out at the plate. Reinheimer gave Gastonia a 5-4 lead heading to the seventh.
But as they did in the first game Wednesday, Lexington wasn’t ready to go down without a fight. However, the Legends didn’t need to do much fighting. Between southpaws Justus Sheffield and Adam Scott, Gastonia pitching issued five walks in the seventh inning. This included a string of four walks in a row, two of them bringing in a run. Lexington scored three in the frame to take a 7-5 lead.
Haab, who allowed a solo shot to Wylie the day prior, was on for the Legends in the bottom of the inning. He walked Watson Jr. and allowed a single to Guthrie before facing Wylie once again.
Wylie was behind in the count 1-2 when he got a fastball over the outside corner. And he didn’t miss it. In fact, he crushed it to right field and gave right fielder Dylan Rock no chance to try making a play. All Rock could do was watch it sail over the wall, giving the Peppers an 8-7 win, a doubleheader split and a series victory.
Gastonia improved 9-15 on the season following a chaotic day of baseball; one that featured one comeback in Game 1 and comebacks from each team in Game 2. The Ghost Peppers will host High Point for three games during Military Appreciation Weekend, starting on Friday at 7 p.m.
