Long Island 10-2, Staten Island 9-3

(Staten Island, N.Y., May 7, 2025) – The Long Island Ducks split a single admission doubleheader with the Staten Island FerryHawks on Wednesday evening at Staten Island University Hospital Northwell Health Community Park, taking game one 10-9 while dropping game two 3-2.

The Ducks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on Seth Beer’s RBI groundout and Taylor Kohlwey’s RBI single off FerryHawks starter Christian Capuano. Staten Island took a 5-2 advantage in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Mark Contreras, RBI singles from Shayne Fontana, Matt Scheffler and Aaron Takacs and an RBI double by Eddy Diaz off Long Island starter Justin Alintoff.

Trailing 7-2, the Flock got to within 7-4 on solo home runs by Chad Pike and Cody Thomas. Long Island sent ten batters to the plate in the sixth and scored six times to jump back in front 10-7, highlighted by RBI doubles from Chris Roller and Thomas and a go-ahead three-run home run off the bat of Troy Viola. A Contreras two-run homer got the FerryHawks to within a single run, but Mark Washington retired the side in order in the seventh to secure his first save in a Ducks uniform and preserve a dramatic come-from-behind one-run victory.

Alintoff registered a no-decision after surrendering five runs on seven hits in one inning of work, striking out one. David Griffin (1-0) tallied the win in relief after giving up four runs on five hits in four innings of work, walking one and striking out three. Capuano (1-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs (five earned) on ten hits across five and two-thirds innings pitched, walking one while striking out four.

Long Island once again struck first in the fourth inning of game two thanks to a leadoff home run to the opposite-field in right off the bat of JC Encarnacion off FerryHwaks starter Jack Mahoney. Staten Island answered right back in the home half of the frame with three runs of their own thanks to a two-run double by Takacs versus Ducks starter Nick Tropeano and an RBI double by Tim Borden off reliever Brad Case. The visitors got to within 3-1 in the seventh on a two-out solo shot to left centerfield produced by Viola but would come up just short as the FerryHawks hung on for the one-run triumph.

Mahoney (1-0) went the distance for the win, allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings pitched, walking one and striking out 11. Tropeano (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in three innings on the bump, walking three and striking out seven. Viola led the way at the plate with two home runs and four runs batted in combined in the two games played for Long Island.

Southern Maryland 4, Lancaster 3

The Stormers had their chances on Wednesday evening, but the club could not push across the key runs.

In the seventh, Lancaster loaded the bags before So. Maryland recorded an out. First baseman Joseph Carpenter managed a walk, centerfielder Nick Lucky lined a single to left, leftfielder LeDarious Clark beat out a bunt single down the third base line, and the Stormers were in business.

But then, Lancaster let So. Maryland pitcher Santiago Florez off the hook relatively unscathed. Second baseman Slater Schield struck out on three pitches in the rubber pellets. Third baseman Nick Ward notched a sacrifice fly to bring Lancaster within one, but shortstop Yeison Coca K’d to end the inning.

Alex Isola, who homered to right earlier in the game, opened the eighth with a deep out to left.  Kelly Dugan struck out after lining a deep foul down the right field line.  Ariel Sandoval also launched a foul to right before picking up a walk from Brandon McCabe.  Sandoval stole second but was stranded when Carpenter steamed a one-hopper to third baseman Jackson Loftin.

Neither team had a huge night at the plate.  Lancaster managed only five hits, including Isola’s two-run homer in the first.  The Blue Crabs didn’t handle the twigs too much better, striking out twelve total times, but they did enough.

After getting a run home on Isola’s first inning throwing error, centerfielder Gio Digiacomo powered a two-run homer into right centerfield in the fourth.

Then, after a few quiet innings of their own, first baseman Brett Barrera plopped a bloop single into right. The soft contact was enough to score a fourth run for So. Maryland, which was all they ended up needing.

So. Maryland starting pitcher Shawn Semple picked up his second win of the season, going six innings strong while allowing just three hits and two runs. On the other hand, Lancaster righty Noah Skirrow takes the loss, giving up five knocks and 4 earned runs through five and two-thirds innings.

The Stormers have lost four in a row, and finish their series against the Blue Craps tomorrow morning at eleven. Southern Maryland on the other hand aims for its first series sweep of the year.

Lancaster hosts Southern Maryland in the series finale on Senior Day.  Fans may tune into FloBaseball, beginning at 10:55.

NOTES:  Schield singled in the third to extend his on-base streak to nine games…Christian Scafidi, Jackson Rees and Ryley Gilliam combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief…Lancaster played without slugging first baseman Mason Martin, who left Tuesday night’s game with an upper body injury.

High Point 4, Gastonia 3 (10 innings)

HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point’s Drew Mendoza drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Rockers a 4-3 win over the Gastonia Ghost Peppers at Truist Point on Wednesday night.

Tied at three after nine innings, High Point reliever Jonah Scolaro (W, 2-0) put the Ghost Peppers down in order in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th, with Luis Gonzalez starting on second base for the Rockers, Ben Aklinski drew a walk and Evans Edwards grounded out to second, moving both runners into scoring position. After an intentional walk to Max Viera, Mendoza faced Gastonia reliever Justus Sheffield (L, 1-1). After going to a 3-0 count, Mendoza took a pair of strikes before the payoff pitch was called ball four, giving Mendoza a run-scoring walk and lifting the Rockers to the 4-3 win.

That extra innings would be needed seemed a moot point after the Rockers went into the ninth inning up 3-1. But Gastonia’s Justin Wylie and Patrick Mazeika each hit solo homers off closer Tommy Doyle to tie the game and force the extra frame.

“They got to our bullpen a little bit tonight but when we needed it, Jonah was fantastic. He threw the ball really well,” said Rockers manager Jamie Keefe.

Gastonia was on the offensive attack right from the beginning. High Point starter Erich Ulemen allowed a leadoff double to Kevin Watson, Jr. then hit Richie Martin and Cole Roederer with consecutive pitches to load the bases. A walk to Wylie gave the Ghost Peppers a 1-0 lead before the Rockers had recorded an out. But a visit from pitching coach Frank Viola straightened out Ulemen who escaped the first without any further damage then allowed just one it over his next four innings.

“Sometimes a pitcher just needs to hear from his pitching coach,” said Keefe. “Frank knew what to tell him and after that, Erich was great.”

The Rockers erased Gastonia’s early lead with a run in the fourth coming on a double by Viera and an RBI single from D.J. Burt. High Point took the lead in the sixth when Aklinski singled, stole second and scored on Mendoza’s RBI double. The lead grew to 3-1 in the seventh when Aidan Brewer walked and eventually scored on an Aklinski single.

Mendoza finished the night with three hits and two RBI. Gastonia was led by Dalton Guthrie who had a pair of hits.

The Rockers are now 8-3 on the season and Gastonia falls to 4-7. The two play again at Truist Point on Thursday night at 6:35 before the weekend series shifts to Gastonia’s CaroMont Health Park.

NOTES: Cody Wilson singled in the seventh inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games . . . After hitting at least one homer in each of the first nine games of the year, the Rockers were held without a round-tripper on Tuesday and again on Wednesday . . . Following Tuesday’s 14-8 loss to the Ghost Peppers, the Rockers are now 152-11 all-time when scoring eight or more runs in a game . . . The walk-off walk marked the first in the Rockers’ six-year history. It was their 31st all-time walk-off win.

York 4-2, Hagerstown 2-3

(May 7, 2025 – York, Pa.):  The York Revolution received a pair of excellent pitching efforts, splitting a twi-night doubleheader with the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars with a 4-2 victory in the opening game and an extra inning 3-2 defeat in eight innings in the nightcap on Wednesday evening in front of 3,789 fans at WellSpan Park.

Following Monday’s scheduled off day and Tuesday’s rainout, the Revs got back at it on Wednesday and starter Tyler Palm helped set the tone early. Dinged for three singles in the top of the first, Palm escaped bases loaded trouble, retiring Welington Dotel on a 6-4-3 double play.

Justin Connell immediately thrusted the Revs in front with a first inning leadoff homer high over the Arch Nemesis in left for a 1-0 lead.

Palm worked around a leadoff double by Isaias Quiroz in the third to keep Hagerstown off the board, and the Revs extended the lead in their half as Connell once again served as the ignitor with a one-out double to left center. Jalen Miller followed by banging an RBI double high off the Nemesis to plate Connell. Miller stole third base and scored on a wild pitch as the lead extended to 3-0.

Palm worked 4.1 scoreless and gave way to Noah Denoyer (2-0) who notched the final two outs of the fifth against the top of the order, stranding a runner at third to earn his second win in as many outings.

The Boxcars threatened to erase York’s lead in the sixth as Mauricio Llovera was greeted with four consecutive singles, the fourth of which came from Osvaldo Abreu driving in a pair to slash York’s lead to 3-2. Llovera rebounded to strike out the next two batters and Ian Churchill entered, retiring Quiroz on a long fly to deep center that was run down by Connell, stranding two runners to keep the Revs in front.

Osvaldo Tovalin led off the bottom of the sixth with an opposite field homer to left for an insurance run as York went up 4-2.

Closer Cam Robinson was greeted with a first pitch single by Errol Robinson leading off the seventh, but picked off Robinson, struck out Gary Mattis, and retired Joe Campagna on a pop up to put a quick end to the 4-2 victory, recording his third save.

Lefty Matt Walker gave the Revs a terrific effort in the nightcap, striking out a career-high 11 batters and allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings in the longest outing by a Revs starter this season.

Hagerstown managed just a third inning RBI single by Mattis and a fourth inning solo homer to straightaway center by Abreu, leading Walker and the Revs, 2-0.

Boxcars starter Domenic Picone limited the Revs to just three hits over five scoreless innings, walking one and striking out a pair.

Alerick Soularie blasted a dramatic game-tying two-run homer to left center with two outs in the sixth against reliever Jack Weisenburger, knotting the game at 2-2.

Lefty reliever Danny Denz fired a dominant 1-2-3 seventh with a pair of punch outs for the Revs, but Boxcars closer Rafael Kelly stranded two in the bottom half for his own scoreless frame as the game went to extras.

With runners at the corners and one out in the eighth, Mattis instigated a double steal prompting a throw to second that allowed Rabel Colon to score from third base for a 3-2 Hagerstown lead.

Jack Maruskin notched his first pro save in the bottom of the eighth, stranding two runners to salvage the split for Hagerstown.

Notes: Walker’s 11 strikeouts eclipse his previous career high of 10 set on July 1, 2024 with Chicago (vs Sioux Falls). It is the 12th performance in Revs history of 11 or more strikeouts and first by a Revs pitcher since Chris Vallimont struck out 11 Gastonia hitters on May 11, 2024. Walker did not issue a free pass, marking the seventh performance in Revs history of at least 11 strikeouts with no walks and first since Jorge Martinez did it on May 20, 2022 vs Lexington. Walker joins Chris Cody (twice) and Ross Detwiler as the only lefties to strike out 11 or more in a game in Revs history, while his no-walk 11-strikeout performance is just the third by a Revs lefty and first since Detwiler did it on May 26, 2018 vs the Road Warriors; that came in Detwiler’s final start before his contract was purchased by the Seattle Mariners as he ended up back in the big leagues later that season. York was last in action on Sunday when the Revs split a doubleheader vs Long Island; it marks the first time since August 29-31, 2021 that the Revs played back-to-back doubleheaders (also resulting in a pair of splits at home). Hagerstown righty David Richardson (0-2) struck out nine in four innings in the opener including four batters in the third inning alone, but a wild pitch on a swinging third strike by Frankie Tostado allowed Miller to score from third. Connell extended his season-opening on-base streak to all 11 games and leads the league with a .571 on-base percentage. Miller hit safely in both games extending his hitting streak to a Revs season-best 10 consecutive games. Tostado lost a nine-game streak in the opener. William Simoneit went 4-for-5 in the doubleheader and is now 8-for-17 in his first five games. Mason Walker made his pro debut, starting at shortstop in the nightcap and becoming the third Revs player to make his pro debut this season; he reached safely twice, drawing a pair of walks in three trips to the plate. Brandon Lewis, signed earlier in the day, played both games at third base and doubled in the nightcap for his first Revs hit; the former fourth-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers began the season in the Mexican League and has 83 home runs in five seasons in the Dodgers system including a career-high 30 long balls in 2021.

Up Next: York hosts Hagerstown in the homestand finale at 11 a.m. on Thursday. RHP Foster Pace (1-1) faces Mike Kickham (0-1) on Baseball in Education Day. It is also Hunger Free Thursday presented by Members 1st Federal Credit Union. Tickets are on sale at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Shipley Energy Ticket Office.
