Gastonia alum Escarra in the limelight with Yankees debut

Former Gastonia player J.C. Escarra was the Atlantic League Player of the Month in May 2023.

Escarra, a catcher who also played the corner outfield positions, hit .374 in 28 games at the start of the ALPB’s 2023 season. Through the first five weeks of the season, Escarra led the Atlantic League in hits (43), doubles (12) and extra base hits (20). He posted a .374 batting average with 26 runs scored, eight home runs and 31 RBI while striking out just 11 times in 115 at-bats.

His torrid offensive start drew the attention of MLB scouts. After stops in the Mexican League and the Puerto Rican Winter League, Escarra was signed by the Yankees and spent the 2024 season at Class AA Somerset (N.J.) and Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

On March 27, Escarra was in Yankee Stadium with the Yankees, preparing for his Major League debut.
