Welington Dotel of the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars was recently honored as a member of the Atlantic League’s Silver Anniversary team.
Dotel, 39, was recognized as one of the 25 greatest players in ALPB history when the league celebrated its 25th anniversary season in 2023. Dotel spent the 2023 season in the American Association before returning to the Atlantic League last year.
Dotel is the Atlantic League’s active career leader with 766 games played, 887 hits, 142 doubles, 31 triples and 159 stolen bases.
The Atlantic League Player of the Year in 2015 in his first season with Bridgeport, Dotel posted a league-best .340 batting average with eight homers and 68 RBI. He led the league with 180 hits, 13 triples and 45 stolen bases to go with a .492 slugging percentage and an OPS of .863. Dotel was elected to three ALPB All-Star games (2015, 2018, 2019) and named a Postseason All-Star in 2015. He played for Bridgeport from 2015-17, Sugar Land in 2018 and was with the York Revolution from 2019-21. This is Dotel’s second season with Hagerstown.
Dotel’s 180 hits in 2015 stand as the third-most in a season in league history and he is the only player in league history to post five seasons with a .300 batting average or higher. He is one of just 12 players to ever have two seasons with 150 or more hits.
