York 6, Hagerstown 5

(August 7, 2024 – Hagerstown, Md.):  David Washington homered and ripped a game-tying two-run single in the seventh, keying a comeback win for the York Revolution, 6-5 over the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars on Wednesday night at Meritus Park.

York trailed early as the Boxcars built a 3-0 lead out of the gates. Blake Berry singled up the middle with two outs in the first to drive in the first two runs, and Cito Culver singled home another with two outs in the second.

Boxcars starter Parker Markel retired his first nine batters faced on the night, but Washington provided the Revs’ first hit with two outs in the fourth, launching a solo homer to right center to get York on the board on Washington’s 26th of the year and 95th of his Atlantic League career.

Joe Perez singled and Jacob Rhinesmith walked to keep the fourth inning rally going, and Zander Wiel ripped an RBI single to left to bring York within 3-2.

Game flow trended in the wrong direction as Hagerstown answered right back with two of their own, squelching the Revs’ momentum. Demetrius Moorer’s RBI ground out and Culver’s two-out RBI double to right center built the Boxcars’ lead back to three at 5-2.

Revs starter Aaron Fletcher finished strong with a six-pitch fifth inning in his no-decision, while Nelvin Correa (2-1) was first in from the bullpen with a scoreless sixth.

York’s offense awoke in the seventh, beginning with Michael Berglund’s leadoff single to right and a walk drawn by Alerick Soularie. With one out, Rudy Martin Jr walked to load the bases, and Matt McDermott laid off a close 3-2 offering from reliever Rodolfo Sanchez (1-1) to force in a run, bringing York within 5-3.

Hagerstown called on lefty Jose Lopez to face Washington who came through with a clutch game-tying two-run single to center, drawing the Revs even at 5-5. McDermott scored the eventual winning run, getting a great read from third on a two-out wild pitch and sprinting home for a 6-5 lead.

The Revs bullpen took over from there as Matt Turner struck out the final two in a perfect seventh and Aaron Holiday stranded a pair in the eighth.

Brett Schulze picked up his sixth save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, securing the Revs’ 60th victory of the season and another series win.

The Revs will go for a sweep on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as Jon Olsen (8-1, 3.26) faces off with Mike Kickham (5-9, 5.23). Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 98.9 FM & 1350 WOYK, 989woyk.com, The New WOYK app, and FloBaseball.TV beginning at 6:10 p.m.

Notes: Washington’s 26 home runs are tied with Nellie Rodriguez (2022) for fourth most in a season in Revs history while he is now just five shy of becoming the 13th in league history to 100 home runs. It was his first long ball since a two-homer game on July 20 vs Lexington. Martin Jr added to his league lead and Revs record with his 61st steal of the year in the fifth inning but was caught stealing for just the second time all season when he overslid second base the inning before, ending his Revs record streak of 37 consecutive successful attempts. Holiday’s scoreless outing was his 14th in 15 appearances with York. The Revs match a club record at 31 games above .500, now 60-29. At 17-9 in the second half, the Revs are one game back of Lancaster for first place in the North Division. York improves to 32-13 on the road, having won 12 of the last 14 road contests. The Revs are now 22-5-2 in series this year and have won 14 of their 16 road series. They improve to 12-3 against the Boxcars including a 5-0 mark at Meritus Park and have won eight straight head-to-head, tying a franchise record for most consecutive wins against one opponent in a season series, matched earlier this year against Lancaster.

Long Island 7-2, Staten Island 1-5

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 7, 2024) – The Long Island Ducks split a single admission doubleheader with the Staten Island FerryHawks on Wednesday night at Fairfield Properties Ballpark, taking game one 7-1 before dropping game two 5-2.

Ryan McBroom got the Ducks on the scoreboard first in game one with a first inning sacrifice fly to left field. JC Encarnacion added a sac fly to right in the second, doubling the Ducks lead to two. RBI singles by Aaron Antonini and Zach Racusin off FerryHawks starter Noe Toribio in the third doubled Long Island’s advantage once again to 4-0.

Staten Island grabbed a run in the fourth inning on Roldani Baldwin’s RBI single to left field off Ducks starter Mike Montgomery. However, Taylor Kohlwey drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the frame, making it 5-1 Ducks. Bases loaded walks by Antonini and Alexis Pantoja in the bottom of the sixth rounded out the scoring.

Montgomery (5-4) earned the win, tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out three. Toribio (1-1) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and four walks in three innings with four strikeouts. Antonini led the Ducks offense with two hits, two RBIs and a run.

Both teams traded zeroes in game two until the top of the fifth inning when the FerryHawks scored three runs against Ducks starter Daniel Corcino. Nate Scantlin’s RBI single to center field and Luis Castro’s two-run single to left did the damage. The Ducks answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on Kole Kaler’s sac fly to center off FerryHawks starter Taylor Lepard.

Staten Island added two runs in the sixth on Kyle Dernedde’s RBI single and a run-scoring wild pitch increased the visitors’ lead to 5-1. McBroom’s RBI single to left in the bottom of the sixth closed the gap to three, but the Ducks were unable to pull even.

Lepard (1-8) collected the win, tossing five innings of one-run ball, yielding one hit and three walks while striking out three. Corcino (5-7) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits and three walks in five innings with four strikeouts. Brian McKenna earned his fourth save of the season with a scoreless seventh inning.

Lancaster 5-1, Southern Maryland 4-0

Pinch runner Shawon Dunston, Jr. scored the decisive run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Lancaster Stormers took Wednesday’s regularly scheduled game, 1-0, from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Earlier, Trace Loehr keyed a three-run seventh with a double to right center as Lancaster took the nine-inning suspended game, 5-4.

Mason Martin opened the bottom of the seventh with a fly ball to deep left off Garrett Martin (5-7).  Left fielder Anthony Brocato appeared to lose the ball in the lights for a second, then the wind pushed it toward the angle in the fence.  The ball fell and spun away from Brocato, allowing Martin to reach third on his first triple of the year.  Dunston was brought in to run for Mason Martin, and Joe Stewart took a 1-2 pitch to right field.  Miles Williams made a lunging catch while retreating on the ball but had no chance to throw out Dunston.

Up until then, Garrett Martin and a trio of Lancaster hurlers had matched zeroes with very little offense.  The Blue Crabs right-hander had surrendered four hits and no walks while striking out seven.  Noah Bremer, making his third start in five days with two of those being suspended early, tossed five shutout innings on two hits and two walks.  Kyle Johnson pitched a perfect sixth, and Phil Diehl (4-2) survived a one-out infield, followed by a stolen base and throwing error in the seventh, to record the win.

Southern Maryland had two runners reach third in the game; Lancaster had one until Mason Martin’s triple.

In the first game, the bottom of the seventh was the key to the Lancaster win.  Dunston ripped a one-out double into the right field corner off Jason Creasy (5-1).  Creasy then walked Chris Proctor.  Dunston and Proctor executed a double steal, and both scored when Loehr found the alley in right center for his double and a 4-2 edge.  Two batters later, Gaige Howard looped a single into right center, providing Lancaster with a needed insurance run.

Scott Engler, making his Clipper Magazine Stadium debut, retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the eighth before walking Michael Baca and Travis Demeritte back-to-back.  They pulled off a double steal before Josh Broughton found the alley in right center, scoring both.  However, Broughton got caught between second and third for the final out of the inning.

A sac fly by Chad Sedio gave Lancaster the early lead in the suspended game.  Juan Kelly tied the score with a homer to left, and Broughton put the Blue Crabs ahead with a two-out single to left in the sixth.  Mason Martin’s double to left center in the bottom of the inning tied the score.

Oscar De La Cruz (3-2) picked up the game at the point of suspension and went 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two runs for the win.  He struck out eight.  Stephen Nogosek pitched a perfect ninth for his league-leading 12th save.

The Stormers will entertain the Blue Crabs again on Thursday evening.  Left-hander Brady Tedesco (0-3) will start for Lancaster against Southern Maryland’s Spencer Johnston (5-3).  Fans may tune into FloBaseball and Blue Ridge 11, beginning at 6:40.

NOTES:  Lancaster (19-9) moved back to a one-game lead over York in the North…Long Island trails by 2 ½, pending the outcome of a second game…Howard went 3-for-4 in the opener, his 32nd multi-hit game of the season…Martin had three extra-base hits in the doubleheader…Lancaster failed to homer in the doubleheader after connecting in 14 of the previous 15 games…The second game was only Lancaster’s fifth win of the season when the team has not scored at least five runs…Dunston stole his 94th base as a Stormer, moving him to sole possession of third place on the all-time list…Loehr became the fifth Stormer this season to drive in 40 or more runs.

High Point 5, Gastonia 4

GASTONIA, N.C. – The High Point Rockers overcame an early 2-0 deficit and withstood a late Gastonia rally to defeat the Baseball Club 5-4 on Wednesday night at CaroMont Health Park.

It was High Point’s fifth win in its last seven meetings with Gastonia.

The win keeps the Rockers (17-10) in second place in the Atlantic League’s South Division, 1.5 games behind Charleston (18-8) which blasted Lexington 12-4 on Wednesday.  Gastonia (16-12) is in third place, trailing the Rockers by 1.5 games.

Gastonia’s Jake Gatewood gave the Baseball Club a 2-0 lead in the first when he homered with Clint Coulter aboard off Rockers starter Derrick Adams (W, 1-0).

The Rockers exploded for five runs in the top of the second. Quincy Nieporte led off the frame with a solo homer off Gastonia starter Harrison Francis (L, 1-2). Michael Martinez and Trey Martin each drew a walk which allowed Brian Parreira to drive in Martinez from second with a single to left. D.J. Burt then doubled to right to score Martin and Parreira before Martin Figueroa grounded out to score Burt and give the Rockers a 5-2 cushion.

Adams settled down and allowed only a double and a walk over his final four innings before exiting after the fifth. Adams allowed three hits and struck out three in his Rockers debut.

Jacob Edwards and Kyle Halbohn each threw a scoreless inning. Gastonia touched Zach Vennaro for a pair of runs in the eighth, putting runners at second and third following a hit batter, a single and a wild pitch. A pair of infield ground outs plated two runs but Will Carter pitched around a single and a walk in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.

Nieporte finished the night with three hits and an RBI while Burt and Parreira each claimed a pair of hits. The Rockers pitching staff held Gastonia to just six hits while walking three and striking out six.

Game three of the series is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Thursday at CaroMont Health Park. Rockers fans should check the club’s social media channels for weather updates and game status during the day on Thursday.

NOTES: The Rockers signed LHP Derrick Adams to start Wednesday night’s game at Gastonia. The lefty spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Charleston Dirty Birds… High Point currently has five pitchers on the injured list including starters Taylor Guerrieri, Neil Ramirez, Stephen Ridings, and Cooper Casad and reliever Braeden Ogle… Quincy Nieporte, who spent nine games with the Rockers at the end of the 2021 season before having his contract purchased by the Detroit Tigers, has gone five-for-nine in his first two games back with the Rockers.
